Well, some spoilers here, some other stuff. First, for non spoilers... DT did announce at the Provicence show that they would be back for a full show. DT also did manage to get 1.5 hours on stage, rather than the hour they were announcing For the person who asked about problems with the .mp3 files, the problem is the web server not having .mp3 as a proper entry in the mime.types file, and the admin needing to make a change to that file (and probalby send a HUP to the web server) now, for the ***********SPOILERS*************** Well, got back from the show, and what a show it was. Started with New Millenium, which sounded good... Myung had the Stick, which really was a funky looking thing... great sound, though... They played a good deal of FII, but skipped HK/LitS, which is one of my favorites as well as YNM and ToT. The show had no WDADU, and very light on I&W (it was a shortened show, though). They played PMU, UaGM, and closed with Metropolis. Metropolis I think is becoming the permanent encore, with good reasons... you just don't get much better than it for a closer... really gets the crowd going. They expanded out the added jam from the Fix shows, and Metropolis ended up being about a 20 min song by the time they finished... During Just Let Me Breathe, James used a megaphone for some of the lyrics, sorta gave it a different sound than on the CD. One problem I had was that HY was played with electric guitar, and sounded very muffled, would have sounded much better w/ accoustic, IMO. Lets see... what else... well, the moshers were really annoying here, way too many of them... I was close to a pole for part of the show, and was squished against it, but that might be better than having been in a mass of motion, that happened. There was some asshole who decided to run up on stage, and do a cannon ball right into the crowd, right were alot of us were standing, I think most of us made it out of the way, and he almost went straight to the ground, but got some cushioning... Also, some moron tried to climb up on one of us to start crowd surfing, but also go no support, and went straigt down to the ground. It was interesting looking at these moshing morons. They were just sorta standing around with bored looks on their faces when complex songs such as Voices came on... Also, they actually managed to stop during JLMB, and evne Lie, I was soooo happy about that... I kept on tirning around every 10 or 20 seconds, to make sure I wasn't about to be kicked in the head from crowd surfers, and actually saw calmness... Anywa, thats a quick revoiew of the show from my end... -- +------------------------------------------+-----------------------+ | A daily dose of eMpTyV | Dream Theater | | will flush you mind right down the drain | Falling Into Infinity | | --- taken from: Just Let Me Breathe --- | In Stores NOW!! | +------------------------------------------+-----------------------+ Michael Burstin: email_address_removed Oh my God, they've killed Kenny!! http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~mikeb/ Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email: http://www.cauce.org ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Oct 1997 13:23:42 -0700 From: Brian To: email_address_removed Subject: Petrucci falling off stage? Although they had to do a mini setlist, it was still 90 minutes. JP was completely on top of his game. Every time I see him I am more impressed. On at least three occasions, I was left completely in a state of shock. I was probably drooling some serious slobber. It seems as if some jammers seem to take his playing for granted. Every review should open up with "JP rules" !! This is the consummate progressive rock guitar professional playing in a medium which allows him to fully exploit his talents. And remember, he's a nice guy also. Mike was a monster as we have all come to expect. JM = also cool. He played that Chapman Stick thing on NM. Looks really weird and somewhat uncomfortable to play in a live setting but of course he was up to the task. DS kept a somewhat low profile but seemed to be into things. Didn't try to provoke a fight by taunting James. James was basically on for the whole night although he did forgot the words in the middle of Metropolis. Doh !! Not that at work, I dont ever charge out of my office on a "mission" under a full head of steam and promptly forget where the hell I am going. Hey, its the second thing to go, right ?? (I forget the first .....) On a very positive front, they decided to keep the volume at a very loud level instead of attempting to break the Who's record of something like 170 db. Definitely loud enough. You felt the bass thumping at the chest but the ears wont ring until next next week. Quite tasteful. The only thing that didn't seem to work for me was Hollow Years. The instrumentation, especially at the beginning, just didn't seem to sound right. Sounded mushy. I dont claim to know what to suggest though. I dont know if they could pull it off using an acoustic guitar as crowds tend to not be quiet when they should be but it may be worth a try. I love the song so I hope that they keep it in their rotation. The crowd was pretty rowdy including the requisite crowd surfers and stage crashers which could easily be done without. To his credit, James took it in stride when a young female "joined him" for the ending of Metropolis. Basically the most intense 90 minutes of live music that you could hope to experience. I hope that this bodes well for this next Saturday. The first and second verses are the same. The third goes like this: I was sitting on the edge of my bed Staring at the paper through my tears It read: Say Goodbye to Jesus The world he left will never be the same The Speak to Me lyrics (as best I can make out) are... I remember when we were so young You embraced my fears and made me strong Never did you actually hold my hand Your silence no one else would understand Did you fall? Did you crawl? Will you open up at all? Did you hear things you fear? Did I make it clear? Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're feeling inside Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're feeling inside Do you like the clothes she wears today Could lie a love affair against a shade (I doubt this is right.. anyone got a better idea?) Often times I wish you'd speak to me Through the open book the world revealed to see (again, not sure about this line) Did you fall? Did you crawl? Will you open up at all? Did you hear things you fear? Did I make it clear? Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're feeling inside Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're thinking Tell me all you're feeling inside So easy, easier If you spoke to me So easy, easier Speak to me Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're feeling inside Tell me what you're thinking Tell me what you're thinking Tell me all you're feeling inside ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Oct 1997 18:14:59 -0400 From: John Gilbert To: email_address_removed Subject: Cool pics... Spock's Beard has a page, as does Mastermind, and I highly recommend you check them out. Do a search for "Michael Backof" using your web progam and you'll find a good list of prog bands reviewed. > If there are any other bands you know of that you could also > reccomend, then please do. Of the ones that I think would appeal to you, I can tell you about the following: - Anekdoten: You've got to hear Vemod, though it will take you some searching and mail-order to get your hands on it. The music is definitely a spin-off of King Crimson, but its different from most other prog-metal in that the bass is what carries the tune (think Chris Squire on steroids). They have a very heavy sound, using guitar, bass, cello, drums and mellotron. Their second album is supposed to be different, so I don't know if they stuck with it. - Tad Morose: This is heavier than Dream Theater, but they lose a lot that DT has - subtlty and melody being the main casualties. They also use keys, and the progressive edge is there, but it isn't as intricate. - King Crimson: Probably one of the first prog bands, these guys have also gotten heavy in recent years. Check out Thrak (not Thrak Attak) or B'Boom to see what they're about. Robert Fripp makes good use of dissonance and grunge, and there aren't many other bands that make as complex music as this band does. - Magellan: These guys are one of the more prominent Magna Carta bands, and they sound like a lighter form of DT. It would probably be more appropriate to call them prog-rock than prog-metal; their music is mainly synth-driven and somehow Californian. - Arsin: and lastly, this is a trio from Canada that sound remarkably like another better-known trio from California, except that Arsin is a bit heavier. Hope ya enjoy :) Dom'ny ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 97 3:17:24 EDT From: Christopher Bellardine To: email_address_removed Subject: No messages for a whole day.
