Message-ID: I need from some help from the wiser of you jammers out there who know of the bands I am about to list. I am looking for some opinions on these bands and some reccomendations on what album would be a good first investment. ANGRA ````` Heard heaps 'bout these guys. Downloaded lots of clips from Dr.Mosh, I like what I hear....Holy Land or Angel's Cry? Not sure what to go for. Also heard that Freedom Call is good too. ENCHANT ``````` Once again, heard much about these guys. Wounded or BP of the world? Which is a better album to first get into the band ? SPOCK'S BEARD ````````````` These guys are consistently mentioned on the JAM, but I know jack about 'em. What do they sound like ? What influences ? Which album can you reccomend ? If there are any other bands you know of that you could also reccomend, then please do. Please email me privately and elaborate as much as possible. I've been to many prog. review sites, but I'd like to get as many varied opinions as possible. For some point of reference, my fav. albums are; DT; I&W and AWAKE. FW; Parallels. Superior; Behind Symph.X; DW o Tradgedy QR; OP. Mindcrime BTW, for those who don't know there is a good prog. review site called Metallic Symphonies at http://www.onr.com/progress. Lots of bands covered, good reviews. Also another called Heady Metal, at http://headymetal.simplenet.com Not quite as extensive, but it's got album cover pics and sound clips for each band. Cheers, Ian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 19:55:44 -0500 (CDT) From: Loren Caler To: email_address_removed Subject: Cleanliness Message-ID: Well after listining to FII for a while now (just about once every day since I got it), I have come to some different conclusions than I first wrote. The main thing I have to say is that I have TOTALLY reversed my feelings of the production of the album. What I mean by this is not the way the instruments SOUND, but the actual recording. Bottom line : IT'S DIRTY! I have an exceptionally clean stereo in my car with three amps and electronic crossever etc etc. Top of the line everything. Not bragging, just saying that it's clean, so I can tell whats clean and whats not. The head unit has a seven band eq. and a 15 band spectrum analyzer. Now on Awake (the CLEANEST album I own) you can see a huge difference compared to FII. The main thing with FII is that everything is maxed out. Well on some songs that is. It seems like every song has a different sound. Especially with the drums. Here's a list of how some of the songs come up as far as individual instruments being clean or dirty and muffled. NM- this song as a whole is pretty clean except for a few parts where things get cluttered YNM- the drums here are pretty dirty, especially the snare and bass. The guitars aren't that great either. PS- Drums here are muffled sometimes, except the bass drum, and I personally think that the guitars are up WAAAAAAY too much. I don't mean I don't like what he's playing, just that it overpowers everything else. HY- Actually one of the best (clean) songs on the album. Prob. because of the acoustic. BMS- Dirtiest song on the album. Everything. I'm not talking about distortion either. Just the general sound. Things gets muffled out and just sounds bad. HK - Bass is clean here, but the drums get a little distorted. In turn that makes everything else sound bad. LItS- I couldn't figure out what was wrong here. Something didn't sound right, maybe the was too much mid in this song. That's what it sounded like anyways. TAMP - Pretty clean here. Nothing really that bad. JLMB - I think it's the guitar tracks again that get fuzzy. Also the drums arent too great either. AL - Another clean song. Second best to HY. ToT - Actually the keyboards here are pretty dirty. And some of the guitars and drum are bad in some areas. Cleanest bass on the album though. Now I'm not giving opinions on the song themselves, just saying what I heard and saw through my system. I can't really say WHO is to blame, but it makes me kinda mad. Like someone said a few jams ago, "DT deserved better than this!". That's MHO anyways. -Loren ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 21:03:28 -0400 From: Pat Sullivan To: email_address_removed Subject: ACOS-Metropolis Message-ID: >And then Kevin Moore left and Derek Sherinian joined in, when the band >released "A Change of Seasons". The liner notes of the CD say that it was >originally meant as a part of Metropolis, but I cannot see the relation >between the two songs. That's because there isn't one. If you read the liner notes more carefully, it says only that ACOS was written around the same *time* as Metropolis, not that the songs are related at all. This reminds me of a recent thread on the newsgroup where somebody was adamantly insisting that ACOS *was* Metropolis Pt. II. He quoted the same part of the liner notes as his source. _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: email_address_removed WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ There cannot be a crisis today; my schedule is already full. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 21:15:57 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Michael Bradley) To: email_address_removed Subject: Derek Sherinian on FII, Pt. 2 Message-ID: Hey all, Someone posted this: >Finally, I think that Derek is a really cool keyboard player. In time he >will fit in with the band. FII is the first full length album he's done >with the band, so for those who didn't like it: give him a second chance. >He'll do better -- although he's doing really well already. I've only skimming the jam lately, but I thought these arguments against Derek had FINALLY ended. Derek is by far the better choice for DT right now for ONE BIG REASON. Kevin Moore wasn't into the band anymore!! It's that simple. A player can have all the chops in the world, but if their heart isn't in the music they're not going to produce. Regardless of what anyone thinks about FII vs. Awake overall as albums, Derek's performance on FII kicks the crap out of Kev's on Awake. Also, I think few could claim that Kev's sounds were as good as Derek's. I loved Kev as a player, but Derek's sounds are in another league. Nothing against Kev, it's just that (IMHO) Derek's rig is better. In fact, the keyboardist in my band plays the Korg Trinity. Nothing can touch that thing. Sorry if I sound like an asshole, but if I were Derek Sherinian reading the Jam, I'd be really bummed that people are still comparing him to Kevin Moore and talking about how he could fit in better. See y'all at the Toad's show! -MB ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 18:16:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Mike Rengel To: email_address_removed Subject: Metropolis and ACoS Message-ID: >And then Kevin Moore left and Derek Sherinian joined in, when the band >released "A Change of Seasons". The liner notes of the CD say that it was >originally meant as a part of Metropolis, but I cannot see the relation >between the two songs. They are COMPLETELY different in style -- at least >when the ACoS CD was released, the band says that the song has been >completely rewritten. That's not what the liner notes say. They say that Metropolis part I and ACoS were both written at the same time, around the period of I&W. They are not related to each other or continuations of each other. I also enjoyed KM's performances on I&W and the others he worked on, but Derek Sherinian is awesome, too. Does anyone else like the cool organ "riff" he plays at 2.08 of JLMB? Most definitely. i think it's better than Morningrise! Morningrise is very structured. You know electric/acoustic/electric/acoustic etc but Orchid is more random. Still the same "always" harmonised guitars just less organised. Also the lead guitar, while not shredding is more interesting on Orchid. I got Orchid first and bought Morningrise when it first came out. They are almost the perfect mix of Prog and Black metal and it comes out sounding like - you said it - Forest Metal!!
