Nope. :-) On the Live In Tokyo video, during his YtseJam drum solo, MP plays along to a riff from the Pantera song "By Demons Be Driven" (I think? Can anyone confirm? I don't feel like digging out my CD right now.) from their album "Vulgar Display Of Power". It's that part in the solo when the heavy guitar comes in for a few seconds. It's really similar to the thing he did on the Awake tour during the CIAW drum solo when he played along to parts of Slayer "Reign In Blood" and Anthrax/Public Enemy "Bring the Noise" (HEAR THE DRUMMER GET WICKED!!) Hope this helps... I have no attachment to the fan club, other than being a member. You are the dickhead, your so full of yourself and you have no idea what your talking about either. Yes we do talk about DT every day, we are all lucky enough to have a computer and internet/e-mail access, what about those fans who don't ? One year ago, my only access to DT information was the fan club fanzine, every three months I eagerly waited for my copy to arrive so I could get an idea of what's going on with the band. So the fan club provides a valid service of providing information about the band to people who have no access to this list, and for ppl like myself who has, it is still a good read and something to look forward too.The Xmas CD was a nice little surprise to fan club members, no one expected it (cept us jammers). So the bottom line is KAI that, obviously you don't have last FC DC and you are quite bitter about it and unless you are a FC member you will miss out on any future surprises. Stop carrying on like a spoilt brat, get your head out of your ass before you suffocate, paint dries quicker that you catch on. Yes this is personnel, you are a moron, one of those ppl who get on jammers nerves (yes I know this from the IRC jammers) so do us all a huge favour and go crawl back under a large heavy rock and don't come out until you grow up. gRaham_ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 19:06:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Pontrelli To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Musical Tastes and stuff Message-ID: I happen to listen to a wide variety of music.. yes.. DT.. Pink Floyd (#1), Rush..U2..Live etc.. but I also love bands like the Eagles, Pearl Jam, Enya, Badlees,...etc I thought about this.. many people praise half my music and bash the other half. So what s the common thread? I tend to think that I run a wide variety of emotions and moods.. and I believe that the music I listen to shows that. I can get into the three chord music of the Badlees or Neil Young just as much as I can get into DT. It all depends on my mood. Now I have a preference toward Prog because it is easy for me to lose myself in the epic and mystical songs, but there are lots of times when I will prefer nothing but Badlees or some bluegrass band.. I guess what I am saying is that to limit ones self to music that is complex wont do for me. As long as the music spurs something in me.. then I want to hear it. And I am not in a DTmood all the time (though lately it seems so).. and I hope I never limit myself to one genre of music.. cus I like to run the entire spectrum of moods and emotions. I keep all my STYX and Journey albums.. knowing that one day I will listen to them.. I pull out the enya once in a while and lose myself in memories and poetry and thought, and I love to have the shivers run through my spine to the "one-note" opening to "Shine on you crazy diamond". OK.. I ramble. Just listen to whatever fits your mood at the time and dont worry about it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 19:06:58 -0400 (EDT) From: email_address_removed (Stephen LaMonica) To: email_address_removed Subject: Keyboards and Tour dates Message-ID: Someone commented on Derek's keyboard playing and I couldn't agree more. It seems to me that every now and then there is a great band - for this example I will use Pearl Jam - which has powerful, moving music. They become very popular based on their own merit. Record companies and radio stations notice this. So they book anyone with that sound... mostly crappy music missing the power or emotion of Pearl Jam.. and the airwaves are flooded with bands sounding like Pearl Jam, but missing the power or emotino or whatever drove PJ to success. And the average person is flooded with this stuff.. with the record companies and radion stations thinking that these bands will share the same success as PJ and therefore bring in lots of money. So these bands recieve instant success not based on their merrit, but based on what the industry dictates will sell. And many of these bands really lack telent and poetry, and soon die out. Then another great band emerges, but with a different sound.. and the cycle repeats, leaving the public thinking that Pearl Jam is dated, lumping them into this group of "grunge", and calling it cheesey or whatever. This cycle goes on and on. It happened to metal. Remember when glam was popular? They sounding like metal.. the industry thought it would sell so they flooded everyone with it.. and after the shit glam bands ruined the sound and integrity of metal.. people got sick of it and called the entire genre cheesey and moved on.. especially when the radio stations didnt play it anymore cus it wasnt 'in'. I love Queensryche and Images and Words and Journey.. but I hated glam.. though the sounds were similar. All these people who say "we have free choice to listen to what we want".. I dont think it is entirely true. how many people buy random CDs? If you dont have the money.. yoiu listen to the radio.. and are trapped into what the industry feeds you ... esp in areas with two radio stations (central Pa). It isnt really free choice. unless you are rich.. and you can buy every CD.. then you have free choice... even so.. there is a lot of great stuff I want yet no one seems to sell it (MARILLION.. WDADU.. etc).. so it seems like I dont have the choice to listen to that. Of course.. we have the Jam.. which introduced me to some very great music that I would NEVER have known to exist.. cus the "industry" doesnt promote it. OK.. I am finished rambling. We are victims of the industry. But the Jam allows us to kinda break free. (though you gotta wonder if OFB will break free.. and the industry will recognize them..and prog will fill the airwaves.. I am tired. I need sleep. I have to finish my thesis. cheers. -ponte ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 18:45:44 -0500 (CDT) From: Sava Web To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: new Savatage cd Message-ID: > > I was thinking about the reason why they aren't releasing the new cd and > it doesn't make sense. Actually it does make sense. One of the main reasons for holding the US release until Jan '98, is that if they do release TWOM in November they would be competing with TSO (themselves) for radio airplay. Also they will not be able to tour the US in support of the album until Feb or March . Since the Jan release will be fresh in the US Fans minds, a better turnout is expected. > > Most Savatage fans already have TSO and aren't going to buy it again anyway. > Therefore the record company will be getting no money until January. Well, actually I think only 40-50% of Sava fans have TSO, I know that we get messages every week, asking what is this TSO thing... Also there are many people that could not find this release since it sold out of most retails a few days before Christmas. Atlantic is betting big on continued sucess of TSO and has already printed 350,000 CDs. > > Makes you wonder how record companies even survive with their thinking... > It is all money and business that makes they make seeming stupid decisions. I heard that about lossy compression used on MiniDiscs, but that's not what I'm writing this for. :) A friend of mine (which know a lot more than me about minidiscs) said they use a thermal process to record the information on the discs (the component of the disc itself is sensible to heat, though), and, let's say, if you forget one of your minidiscs in your car on one of those really hot days, your recordings are gone. :) I don't know that myself. Have you noticed anything like this ? It may be true in some cases. For me, I usually like the latest release by a band the best. That's the way it has usually always been for me. Of course there are exceptions. With DT, I don't think I could ever choose a favorite. Another example is with Firehouse, I like their 2nd album best (out of 4) even though when I bought their first album (back when that was the only one released), I was as obssessed with that album as I am with DT now. I can't think of too many bands where I like the first album I heard by them the best. Maybe I'm just strange that way, though. There have been a number of tests on this, and no one has really been able to prove that they can tell the difference between the two media. Invest in good headphones (Not shit you can get at Best Buy or Tower Records) and good speakers (Likewise) and use logical speaker placement, etc... these things make a difference. The lossy compression doesn't, when things are recorded and transferred professionally. My FII impression: This is Dream Theater's best album. This is some of the most intricate drumming, and powerful overal musicianship I've ever heard. Everything is well thought out (With the exception that many of the solos sound improvised... something I don't believe Petrucci could have done nearly this well back when I&W was released). Actually in double blind tests, some people can tell the difference between lossy compression and non-lossy due to tinning in the hi frequencies. Most people can't hear past 15khz anyways... The only problem I see with minidiscs is that it is not full PCM 44.1khz so you can't press directly to CD. -The Doc -- #$%*#$*@ E-MAIL: email_address_removed #$%#$#$% _+_+_+_+ Unix, Internet, Intranet Engineering _+_+_+_+ [][][][] Dr. Mosh's Progressive Feast [][][][] #$@#$#@# http://progmetal.gmsnet.com @#$@##@$ ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3102 **************************
