My name is James and I like DT and that's all that really matters. But more importantly, (sorry if this has been reported already)-- Dream Theater at the House of Blues in Hollywood on November 12! Tickets $20. For info see the ticketmaster web page http://www.ticketmaster.com If this is old news then--nevermind. james g ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 17:17:50 +0100 (BST) From: Graham Borland To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: UK tour Message-ID: > From: Andrew Moore > > I only got into DT in Aug. 93 when I heard Surrounded (LATM vers) on the > Metal CD magazine free disc. This was the I&W tour. Then later in the year (November 1993), they played to probably 400-500 people in Edinburgh . . . also very busy. I spoke to a few people who had come up from England just for the show. I honestly believe that if Dream Theater were to tour the UK this time around, they'd have absolutely no problem filling up the "usual" small-medium venues (Nottingham Rock City, Glasgow Garage or Barrowlands, etc.). Still, even just releasing the album is a step in the right direction! :-) Graham -- Graham Borland Email : gborland@apsoft.co.uk WWW : http://www.apsoft.co.uk Alternative Publishing Ltd Tel : 0141 418 0881 30 Clyde Place, Glasgow G5 8AQ Fax : 0141 418 0889 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 12:30:01 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Pat Sullivan) To: email_address_removed Subject: who da fanclub Message-ID: >But I can't >get any of you to agree with me. If that was your intention, then I think your message got buried in what came across to a lot of people as whiny sniveling. I think most people like the idea that this list, as a group, has had an influence on both the band and the label. The recognition was nice, but frankly, not something I need for my resume. :) You don't think this list has a "leg up" on everyone else? Tell me the last place you got a piece of vital DT info that wasn't on here. One on the fanclub fanzines is about the only place I can think of that *might* have an advantage. Other than that, if *we* don't know about it, it ain't real. :) Strictly speaking, yes, you can consider this list just another DT "fan club". But assuming that was your point, your post(s) came across as "How come that fan club gets better stuff that this one?", and the reason is - because they paid for it. >That's it. It was never really about the $15, but the recognition. If your motivation is recognition, then a fan club/mailing list is not the way to go about it. The reality is, no matter how *you* may think of it, the fan club/this list is nothing more than a bunch of people (fans). If you think that that's reason enough to warrant a special "hey thanks" from *anyone*, then you're deluding yourself. ----- _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________________ E-mail: remove "X"'s to reply IRC: DDictator WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html NP: Dream Theater - "Falling Into Infinity" ______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 1997 17:59:35 +0200 From: Shai Yallin To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Falling into maturity? There are very few times when you can actually say "You're missing the point" in an agrument like this. You may have misrepresented yourself, but that's your fault. The $15 dollars isn't what's pissing people off anyways. >yeah, I'll probably join the fan club just to get this year's little bonus. > The real point however, is that I feel we are the fan club. Bzzzt. We're the Ytsejam mailing list. You need to understand that not all of the Dream Theater fans have computers or internet access. Just because there's a lot of us, and we can organize easily because we're all on the net and only have to point and click to get things done, doesn't mean we're any more special than other Dream Theater fans, and the band, management, and label should NOT show us any preferential treatment. That's bogus. We have no ties to Dream Theater, as a group, other than that we're all fans. That means that the only difference between us and the rest of DT's fans is a few microchips and some copper wire. >But I can't get any of you to agree with me. Maybe most of you haven't been >on here long enough to remember the days when the ytsejam always had >a leg up on anyone else. Bzzzt. I've been on the jam since Arastar. This "Leg up on everyone else" bullshit is just amazing though. Why do you want to put yourself, and the rest of the Ytsejam above other Dream Theater fans? That reeks of greed and selfishness. Any info we have should be spread. The band doesn't gain anything from us finding out things and keeping them a secret for only the Ytsejammers. We're just another link in the chain of communication, and what we learn comes from some source that's not "Ytse-Related". At some point, whatever information anyone on this list has shared with us had to come from a source beyond the Ytsejam. > I don't feel that's the case anymore, and my posts were supposed to >muster the enthusiasm to get us back to that status. If you're not >interested in that, then I have to say that I'm surprised and disappointed. Status. WHY? This is such superficial reasoning. The jam is enthusiastic about the new music and the tour. If you want to boost that enthusiasm, do something creative. Don't bitch about the Fan Club, and why we're not the official fan club, and why we're not getting special treatment anymore. I don't have the patience for that kind of greed. The music belongs to the band and the fans, not to specialized groups. Everyone should have equal access to the music Dream Theater makes available. >That's it. It was never really about the $15, but the recognition. That's just it though... some of us aren't motivated by such shallow goals. I guarantee the band recognizes the Ytsejammers. They may run from you if you wear a Ytsejam shirt backstage at one of the shows. I just don't know how you can justify asking for a higher recognition than any other DT fan. Last year when I lived in the dorms, I was surrounded by so many people who I thought were just tasteless when it came to their musical preferences. Half of the people I ran into didn't even know what a quarter note was, let alone what it felt like to play an actual instrument. Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, and 311 were all constantly blared through some of my neighbors' rooms (while I utilized my roomie's stereo system to dominate the floor with DT and Metallica, but that's beside the point....). Anyhoo, from my experiences, people either just didn't understand anything about music and bought their CD's 'cuz they heard a track on the radio and they liked it, or they enjoyed dancing to the monotonous boomp bomp of techno/house music, some people had Hendrix and Floyd collections stacked right next to their bongs and stashes, and others didn't bother listening to music 'cuz they were too busy studying. Let's face it, if you've been on this list for any amount of time, then you're probably a prog-activist by now. It's like a disease, once somebody suggests a cool band like Tourniquet (GED DO THESE GUYS RULE!!!!!!!), somebody else starts suggesting other great bands like Symphony X, Angra, and maybe even turn you onto another genre, tangent to Dream Theater's, like fusion or jazz (Must buy some Tribal Tech...muahahaha). The difference between the outsiders (heh heh, funny how _I'm_ usin' that word to describe pop culture) is plainly, no matter which way you turn/flip/pop/squeeze/fling/squish it, our musical preferences. Not everybody wants a heavy guitar crashing into their music, not everybody wants even so much as a complicated drum track. Flip around your radio, and while the music/noise/sounds you hear are broadcasted because of some money deal between the radio, the record companies, and the sponsors, the reason that there are so many different channels is plainly because, not everybody likes progressive metal. Sure, it may be a bit narrow minded to us when somebody refers to DT as plain noise, and as much knowledge over the powers and schematics of music that you may hold over the critic, he/she's entitled to that opinion. Besides, it's always funny to see people stick their foots in their mouths, slammin' something because they just don't understand it. A lot of people were callin' The Jimi Hendrix experience drug-induced nonsense way back when (or so I've read/heard), but now everybody reveres him (partly thanks to the friggin' Guitar mags that continue to put him on the friggin' cover) as one of the most creative musical talents that ever graced a fretboard. THe "metal critic" for Guitar thought of Metallica's first album as a bunch of lawnmowers and chainsaws bein' thrown onto tape, saying, "These guys aren't going anywhere with this." The differences in taste are all good 'n fine with me, I have no problem with that. It's the apathy towards learning about anything before making music that ruffles my feathers. In all the arts, I find it really pitiful to see an artist create something "expressive," and then not be able explain it themselves. I do agree though, there is a distinction between "good" and "bad" music, and that can only be made by the individual listener, you, me, your rap-loving brother; it's when the music is inspirational in a way that touches your soul. I just don't understand how singing about sex and getting laid by a bunch of ho's can do that to anybody....
