First of all, for those of you who didn't see Bruce Dickinson, you really blew it. That was one of the truly great shows I've ever seen - five Maiden songs, a bunch of the new stuff, a pogo contest with the members of Geezer, Bruce punching a guy with the microphone, and Adrian Smith. I really enjoyed myself, and was scared to death before we played... What did you think, Kevin? Sorry I never saw you again... Oh yeah, you should hope Brisby doesn't get 40 yards tonight... Now for the second part - Are any of my fellow 'jam types going to Savatage at Jaxx? Wanna help me out, big time? Both of the openers cancelled, so we are now opening the show. HELP.... I agree. Actually, when I first started looking at the lyrics on FII, I noticed a common theme in all of MP's lyrics (NM, BMS, JLMB). I got the impression that the combination of music industry/record label pressure and (perhaps) internal pressure in the band to sell more records was really getting to him. Remember, MP was pushing hard for a 2CD set = noncommercial. Of the whole band, he seems most set on musical/artistic freedom and I think his lyrics speak volumes about his feelings of late. This is just an opinion but I got the exact meaning from the BMS lyrics that Chad did. jam on, -Neil. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 15:01:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Damon Fibraio To: A P Longley Subject: Re: Ray Mansarek Message-ID: I have lots of respect for the former Doors keyboardist. Well, ya know what? I always thought shit like Oasis was immature, whereas DT doing something like, oh, say, "Learning To Live" was actually rather mature. Sure, it's got a bazillion notes in it, but it's a moving piece of music. What is it with people who think that anything with more than four chords and lasts longer than five minutes is pretentious, or, god forbid, immature? I'm sorry, but there are maybe a handful of musicians out there who can pull off the kind ofstuff OFB does on a regular basis. IMHO, the stuff that's pretentious is the fucking record labels and MTV and all the parts of the music *industry* who think that people are dumb enough that they won't notice how trite their current flash-in-the-pan is. (Remember the New Kids On The Block?) They're the immature ones. Twenty minute drum solo? Gimme. =) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 12:05:51 -0700 (PDT) From: "Paul W. Cashman" To: email_address_removed Subject: (Lack of) Tour Dates Message-ID: Let me add my voice to the chorus of voices begging for the True Skinny on the upcoming tour. I'd really like to travel for some of these dates -- out of work on furlough right now, so I have time and little money -- but it's reallly hard to make trip plans when the complete schedule remains veiled in mystery. I'm sure other Southeastern fans feel the same way, ESPECIALLY since there have been no dates announced anywhere near us yet. I can't afford to buy tickets to all of the shows announced so far (within a reasonable range :)), yet the longer we have to go without knowing which dates will be closest to us, the better the chance that these flyspeck venues will be sold out. Who is handling bookings? I'll call them myself if I have to, just to get authoritative information once and for all....... Atlanta date side-note: I'm hoping DT will play a venue in Atlanta that -isn't- the Masquerade. The Roxy Theater would be nice, but it's probably too expensive. The Fox would be ideal, but I think it's a union hall (and a bit too big unless they get more airplay here, too). I spoke to a friend at the International Ballroom (configures for 1,500, 3,500 or 5,000 just by rolling the stage around) and DT could have the venue for $1,500 in the smallest configuration, security and venue personnel included as needed. Not the greatest venue in town, but sheesh, David Bowie is playing there.... :) DT's label apparently hasn't "paid off" (ahem, wink wink nudge nudge) 96rock's airplay consultants, hence 96rock acts all dumb when you call. It's an act, of course; the deejays I know there would love to play DT. I'm sure their label will act all innocent when the subject of Atlanta airplay comes up. It all comes down to money, folks, and where best to apply it. 99-X here (WNNX) might be a brighter hope. Also, if DT works through a powerful local promotions/booking firm, like Alex Cooley and Peter Conlon, they can probably get more exposure that way. If all else fails, the old "let's do an in-store" works, and heck, I'd even try to arrange it for free. :) -- Paul W. So far only five dates have been announced and the tour is supposed to start in 11 days!? Is this the way to promote a tour when a band just released an album that will easily go gold? I thought this tour would bring DT many new fans and that they would be playing larger venues, but the opposite is happening. DT is playing Lupos, a smaller club than the Strand, which they have packed before. I do not understand this logic, especially when DT is getting more exposure than ever. And what is the deal with releasing one tour date at a time. Fans need to know about this tour ASAP, especially those who just heard Burning My Soul on the radio and picked up FII and fell in love with DT. They are not going to drop everything to see a band they don't know much about. Not every DT fan is as hardcore as us Jammers. DT must do a tour of I+W proportions in the US if they want to expand their fan base. I also fail to see how DT will tour the entire East in 10 days (Providence on 10/17). Then the midwest in 14 days (Ohio on 10/28) and then hit the West coast (LA on 11/12). From what I have seen so far, I see this tour as a giant step backward for a band that is making tremendous forward strides. If these dates are going to be the full US tour, I suggest DT take follow Fates Warning's lead and fire their tour manager. I checked Ticketmaster's sight, and there is a listing for St. Andrews Hall on Oct 30. I guess this place is somewhere in Detroit. I've never been there, but one of my friends just saw a show there last night and I guess it's (get ready for a big fucking surprise) pretty small. The TM site says it's a bar, but it also said all ages welcome. The fucked up thing is that this show STILL doesn't come up when you do a search of the TM database for DT. Those original three shows are the only ones that come up. I had to go to the Detroit area show listings to find it. This would leave me to believe that perhaps there are other shows that we don't even know about, so I guess everyone should go to this site and check their own respective cities. Any other Jammers who will be going to this show please e-mail me privately.
