I did'nt realize how many ytsejam digests I was sent. I checked out the official DT web page once and saw the e-mail list. This was my friends computer(gwyn) so I asked her to check it for me. A couple days later we got about 15 ytsejam digests and only got to read it for about a half an hour, then I had to take off. The next day I was sent about another 12 or so, and didn't know were to start writing back. There is so much awsome shit!! here. I didn't find DT until COS, but I first heard I&W and got hooked. I realy have to thank my friend Thor for showing me what I've been mising out on. I never heard a band who's members were all musically talented to perfection. After listening to I&W, Thor showed DT's live in Tokyo. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. When I first heard DT, I heard them on the radio. To me Dream Theater sounded like another group like poison, since at the time I was into only heavy stuff like MegaDeth and Metalica. Dream Theater definately didn't sound heavy. When I heard Awake (which is my favorite album of all), that prooved to me there were heavy, especially the Mirror. FII is way different now that Kevin Moore is not there(bummer deal man), I never thought that keyboard could sound like the way he makes it. Kevin is the man. I play guitar and DT realy opened my eyes to what I like in music, they gave me a new horizon of possibilities. Thank you Dream Theater, and all you ytsejammers every where. See Pat Griffin. 2) Wear it (or an old one) to the show. 3) Watch the Jam for any pre-show party info. 4) AFTER THE SHOW IS OVER, DON'T LEAVE. Go hang out in front of the stage, and other Jammers will find you and strike up a conversation. 5) *Now* decide what to do before the next show, so that everyone can meet up in the same place (and *not* the Fantasia diner! Message-ID: Okay, here I sit, paging through Jams and Jams looking for that final piece of information that will make my life complete - a tour date for the Minneapolis area. The closes I've gotten - Chicago, Nov. 1 Then I hear about an LA tour date on November 15th. So somewhere in there they pass through my town. Do they stop and actually play a gig here? Who knows. But here's my complaint - FOR GOD'S SAKE PEOPLE, WE'RE THE JAM, AREN'T WE? Why must we resort to "Checking the Ticketmaster Web Page" to find out when our favorite band plays??? Isn't it true that a few among us know how to get in contact with the band? Isn't it true that a few among us regularly talk to 'Da boyz? And isn't it true that one among us is in fact MIKE PORTNOY'S PERSONAL MASSEUSE????? (It could happen.) My point is that if anywhere in the world there should be a group of people that know what the fuck Dream Theater's tour dates are, it should be us, right? And yet we don't. Why is this? It just amazes me that Ticketbastard is finding out these dates before us - we the loyal fans!!! So here's my plea - if you happen to be the person that knows how to get in touch with the band or their management or their label, please try and save us all a lot of hassle and try to dig up the whole tour schedule. PLLLLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSEEEEE?????? That way, I don't have to plan digging up some car-poolers with me here and make a huge-ass 6-hour roadtrip to Chicago when suddenly a week before Ticketwanker suddenly decides to post "Minneapolis - November 6th" or something to that effect. We are the Jam. We are strong. We shall not succumb to the will of Ticketspanker!!!!! Note: The above Minneapolis tour date is fictional. Any relationship to a real date is purely coincidental. I don't know about the rest of the songs, but on BMS you have MP doing the low, almost whispered part, and JP and DS using voice boxes. They said they couldn't get JM to stick a tube in his mouth. The verdict is still out on whether this is where the monks are singing (chanting?). Most of the backing vocals that I can hear on the rest of the album sound like layers James (not that this is a bad thing). I'd like to see a list too. One other thing...is it driving anyone else nuts that you can't make out 90% of the samples on this CD? I really like the "step right up, folks" line in JLMB...but that is the ONLY one that I can make out...even with headphones....Oh, and the processed vocal at the beginning of BMS (sounds like they're saying "BMS" rather than "FII" to me). I guess I got pretty spoiled by Awake, and it's very understandable samples. Also, I've seen several people post that JM was using a 10-string Chapman Stick...JP said in his clinic that John actually used a 12-String Stick. Keep 'jammin' ! I am finally back on the list again after moving back to college. To = all the ordered the video of the John Petrucci Clinic in Orlando, I hope = you like it! :) My friend and I went through a lot of trouble to make = copies available, so once again, Enjoy! However, out of the 80+ = responses from those that wanted the tape, about twelve actually = purchased one :( Maybe it was the cash only deal. If we had the luxury = of duplicating these tapes overseas, we would have accepted anything. Anyway, I finally obtained a copy of FII!!! The day I went to get it = at Spec's (release date), I was shocked (or glad actually! ) to hear = that they were all sold out!! This happened at the other Spec's store = too! DT actually lives here at the University of Florida!! I really liked the album A LOT!! It is the most inovative of albums I = have heard in quite a while! I really liked it that Dream Theater = matured in their playing. It sounds very professional and trully = progressive. Progressive is not just playing 56/16 time signatures and = every scale imaginable. It is about being innovative and the best of = the best for your time. They have done it once again! During the Clinic, John Petrucci said he really liked working with = Kevin Shirley. All of this new material IS Dream Theater, NOT Kevin = Shirley! DT had all of these new ideas and he helped make them a = reality. For instance, "Take Away My Pain" was origianlly a backwards = ass 80's sounding ballad. Shirley suggested a world beat to bring out = the true feeling of the sound, and there you have it! DT rules! Daus Studenberg BTW, my friend and I were discussing the true meaning of a progressive = band and we cited that Yes was the best of Rock and DT was the best of = Metal. See what i mean? A true progressive band is the best of its = genre with innovation. Well now we have = techno/industrial/ambiet/electronic becoming popular. Are there any = progressive bands of this genre? This should be the next step IMO. If = you know of anybands like this, please let me know. I am REALLY = interested in a progressive Techno band. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 13:38:16 -0500 (CDT) From: The Phoenix To: email_address_removed Subject: Upcoming shows Message-ID: Remeber all you ytsejammers: with the tour coming up, wear your ytsejam t-shirt so we can all meet each other sometime before/during/after the show. The real heartbreak in this is >that Petrucci actually says it. I don't know about you, but as a >musician, I felt about 1 inch tall reading that. To think that a >musician's musician said, on record, that more technique = immature and >less technique = mature makes me very sad. Also confusing is that the >article goes on to talk about a possible future Dream Theater project is >the most insane, most complicated thing they've ever done. Why go >backward if you've become so "mature?" This was upsetting to me as well. I read the interview in a store a couple of weeks ago, and I almost posted about it then, but since I didn't buy the magazine and I didn't read it that carefully I decided not to say anything for fear of misrepresenting what was actually said. This, however, is exactly what I remember as well. I also thought it was hypocritical of JP to say that their old stuff was immature, and then to say that Met II was the most insane thing they had ever written. He said something almost exactly like "it's in the spirit of the original Metropolis". Would that be the "immature" spirit that he's talking about? The thing that pissed me off the most, though, was how they came on the subject of Metropolis II. The interviewer asked him if he thought that some of the old fans would be dissapointed that the new album was a little more straightforward, or something like that, and JP's response was (I'm paraphrasing, but this is very close), "Well, maybe a little, but for those people, we'll be releasing METROPOLIS II sometime ...yadda yadda" . "Those People"? Would that be, as in, those people who like immature music like DT used to make? I was a pretty put off by the whole article. If anyone has it, they might consider doing us all a favor and posting it; it was really quite short and I think most people would find it to be relevant. Just a thought, though. At the very least, someone could post these sections in question, to make sure I've got my facts straight. -Clark ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 3073 **************************
