Message-ID: <@m400gw.dell.com> I also first heard DT with PMU on Z-Rock. I thought it was a good song, but when I heard them play UaGM about three weeks later, I was hooked. Funny trend in my favorite DT songs is that they are usually written, lyrically at least, by John Petrucci. Every time a song really gets stuck in my head or catches my ear, I just open the liner notes and there's his name. It's almost spooky :) James ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Oct 1997 10:12:16 -0700 From: "John Hough" To: "Ytsejam" Subject: Crack a smile Message-ID: To the guys who were discussing this disc, I would have to agree that this is Poison's best album ever. So technically I was converted by the whole IaW album... I believe my quote after 45 or so minutes of the album was, "Holy crap!!! It just keeps getting better! These guys are just too good." Although If I had to pick one part that just grabbed me, it would have been the TTT/surrounded part. I was immediately hooked... (and am now hooking him up with boots/mp3 disc's/etc. constantly.. since he's not on the jam). Another cool thing... just converted one of my roomates (1 down 2 to go).... he originally heard my IaW/awake one night when we were just hanging out playing pool in the living room for hours... and said... "this is pretty good, this is that DT band you're always talking about?".... so anyway, he really liked UAGM from IaW and parts from awake.... Now yesterday I'm playing the FII album at full blast in the den, and he comes up to me and says, "who the hell is this??? they take all the best parts about metallica and rush and twist it into something totally awesome!". Well anyway, I told him it was DT and he is now borrowing all my albums from day to day (good thing I have alot of boots and 2 copies of most of the releases. Cool... his fav. band is still Metallica, but he told me that DT was his new addition of the month, and it "was quickly working it's way into the top 3"... cool. Message-ID: Here's the thing about the Poison Crack a Smile disc (not that it should be discussed here). There weren't any promos ever made on CD. None..zilch..zip. There were a handful of cassette promo copies issued, with no cover. The CD that is floating around is a bootleg of the cassette promo. This means that although the songs are studio quality, the sound on the CD sounds a little dull, not like your typical crisp CD sound. These bootlegs were marketed as "promos" that slipped through the cracks, but Capitol has confirmed that no CDs were ever cut of this album. If you want to get into the details about the features that are obvoiusly bootleg, contact me directly. As far as I know, only 2 stored carried them in the U.S., and they sold out fast. I don't know how many they sold in total, but it couldn't have been more than a couple hundred. I bought 2 of them at $20-25. Although I'm not ready to sell my extra copy yet, I will make CDr replicas for $20. Hopefully this answers any questions. What I actually wanted to mention was a cool story I heard on the NMS, back when I was on the NMS. It's a story about Geddy Lee, bassist extraordinaire for Rush, for any non-Gedheads not 'in the know'. Supposedly, many years back, Geddy's finger was slammed in a door. His nail fell off or something (pardon my poor story-telling skills -- I'm supposed to be at a Calc lecture in mere minutes), but when it grew back, it was slightly deformed and thicker than normal. He decided to let it grow a little long and use it for a pick. That's part of the reason he has that nice, clean tone. Can anybody verify this, or am I remembering things that didn't happen again? I think that each album has showcased the overall power of the band, but I feel that someone sticks out on each album and truly shines....On WDADU, the entire band is in full force. All of them are proving what they can do. Images and Words...that is without a doubt the Moore album. His solos and melodies sold me on DT and I have been a fan ever since. 6:00, this has to be a tie....Petrucci and Portnoy. The two show such great chemistry...especially in Erotomania(THE guitar solo). A Change of Seasons....we got a glimpse of what Sherinian can offer to the band(he has definitly proven himself on FII)...but LaBrie never sounded better. He is a truly amazing vocalist. Last, but certainly not least...FII is Myung's shining moment. He truly shines on this album. I have never heard such driving bass lines in my life. Equally impressive is his work with the Chapman stick. If anyone has any other opinions, post em. I would love to hear from you guys. One last thing, does anyone feel this way about Portnoy on I and W? There is something about the snare on that album that just doesn't sound right. When I first listened to it, I thought "He is an ok drummer" When I picked up WDADU, I was blown away. Then came Awake. Both of these albums in my opinion had a much better drum recording. Hearing live performances of I and W really shows how the drums should truly sound. Not that it is bad, but the recording just doesn't give his amazing abilities justice. OOPS- I just noticed that I wrote 6:00 on up where I was talking about Awake- I must've been thinking of the drum intro as I was writing. The first time, I've heard Enchant, back in Feb 96, I didn't like them. Especially the last song which is a total clone of DT's 6:00. Well, I have to thank DR.Mosh. I saw his page and all those good things about Enchant. After that, I saw them live as support band for DT (Fix 97). A friend of mine, has sent me a tape with some good progressive songs. Thanks to Erik and Barbara :-) There were also "At Death's Door" and "Mae Dae" from Enchant. These songs are really incredible. Since then, I'm a big Enchant fan. Btw, have you heard "Time Lost". It's really good. I know Altura. They are not bad but bands like SHADOW GALLERY, ROYAL HUNT, IQ and even Enchant are much better (IMO). I would say that more than anything, WDADU is a Moore album. It might be because my favorite track is OAMOT, with his lyrics and that keyboard stuff at the end that makes me want to be a keyboardist. Or it might be that I heard most of these songs for the first time on WDATU or LitS, and then finally heard the keys stick out in the mix on the studio takes. Not that it is bad, but the recording You know, I never even noticed it till Richie pointed out to me the little snare fills in Metro I. On the album, every hit is the same, and Rich said he didn't know how Mike did it. Then he heard a boot, with the dynamics in the snare hits, and got it.
