So here it is.. Who is Vanessa, and who is Anna Lee? I don't suppose = any typical jammers are going to know this, but perhaps someone that = communicates with the band can find out. =20 Also, what exactly is the source of the bass line in YNM at 0:15 - 0:37 = (among other places)? I'd assume upon first guess that it's just Myung, = but listening really close it sounds like it's synthetic. Maybe this is = the stick (?) or Derek doing his stuff. =20 Oh, and one more.. where are the other boys doing background vocals? = They're all listed (with the exception of the Silent Man) as doing = backgrounds, but everywhere I'm hearing the backgrounds I'm thinking = it's LaBrie re-dubbed. =20 I still love this CD. :) Best DT yet! =00 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Sep 1997 22:57:10 -0400 (EDT) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Fates Soundboard? Message-ID: Hey Gang - Just a quick question here... I just got done listening to a fairly decent quality Fates boot from the "Inside Out" tour, and I was wondering if anyone out there has any soundboard recordings from this tour they would like to trade? My main reason for doing this is to get a great recording of Ray singing "Guardian" - I fuckin' LOVE that song, especially the way they played it on that tour. So, if anyone can help out, I'd appreciate it. (I do have a radio broadcast from that tour from Europe when they opened for DT, but they didn't play Guardian. :-( ) Actually, now that I think about it, ANY Fates soundboard would be cool! :-) Also, does anyone have any Angra audio boots for trade? I just moved, so everything is either in shambles, or boxed up, but I'm sure we can work out a trade... eventually. :-) As always with this sort of deal, private e-mail, please. Thanx, Jammerz... Also, did you guys know that Mr. Vai is coming out with a box set in 1998. The1st disc will be a "flexable" re-release, the 2nd CD will be the flexable leftovers, I forget what the 3rd CD is called, but it's a remaster of one of his albums I think, and the 4th CD is all thge stuff that he has done for movies (ie. Crossroads, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, PCU, etc.) Man, I can't wait! Brandon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 00:05:14 -0400 From: Scotch To: Delirium Tremens Subject: more Moore Message-ID: What with the little mini-furor going on over the importance of Kevin Moore (yawn), I just wanted to like randomly point out my little theory on "Space-Dye Vest." You know from the FAQ, where Moore says that he got the idea from looking through some catalog ("pages of Martens on angels") about some chick modeling something called a "space-dye vest." That sounds kind of sketchy to me; I've never heard of anything like that, have you...? I think Moore's just bullshitting that interviewer (and us), and that the title is meant to be more of a play on "space divest." Divest means: 1. to strip of clothing, ornament, etc. (i.e. "The wind divested the trees of their leaves.") 2. to deprive someone of something; dispossess 3. to rid of or free from (i.e. "He divested himself of all responsibility for the decision.") 4. in law, to take away or alienate 5. in commerce, to rid of through sale (i.e. "The corporation divested itself of its subsidiaries.") So "space divest" could mean a few things. The first & foremost idea seems to be that maybe Kevin was getting sick of fame (I mean, we talk about how obscure DT is, but they're pretty famous when you think about it; Kev signs tits for chrissakes) or the responsibilities of being committed to a band; he literally needed some space to himself; he was literally being divested of his space as a musician and as a person. Or that he wanted OUT of the band, wanted to free himself of the responsibility of being beholden to the band's, uh, Petrucciality. And then there's all that stuff about the downfall of his relationship, so that's another place in which he was being deprived of space, emotionally perhaps, or maybe he was just bummed because she kicked him out of her apartment. =) OK, what else. Could be a stab at DT's musical style, that they (him included, so he's maybe feeling regretful) made the songs too complex and technical and so jam-packed full of riffs and solos and weird prog stuff that none of the songs really got a chance to breathe* or got a chance to be all that emotional (this is not my opinion, it's just perhaps an alternate viewpoint, since Moore said he was going in a different direction than DT was), so he might've been talking about the lack of space within songs (and SDV definitely is a more spacious song in terms of simplicity), or maybe the other way, that the long complicated songs took up too much space and he wanted them to pare it down... Ah, whatever. * Lie: "it's a hundred degrees I can't breathe" (well, maybe just a few Berklee degrees); then perhaps Just Let Me Breathe is DT's little musical justification? Actually, I doubt it. Just a stupid footnote, this is. =) Also, some of you diehard Tori Amos fans (like me) probably know that Tori often refers to her songs as her "girls," and, knowing that Moore was a Tori fan himself, this brings to mind the SDV lyric "Found a new girl I think we can make it / As long as she stays on the page" -- maybe a reference to a new songwriting style? Something simpler than DT, whose rehearsal music might've taken up many (cough cough) pages? You know, Moore looks really miserable in all the Awake photos. Except the wide-lens band shot, in which you'll notice that he has the leftmost fold all to himself. Awww. That would be the "alienation" aspect of "divest," eh? And then of course, maybe he thinks DT sold out, divested their prog roots for the Big Money. Ha ha ha ha. Somewhere, Kevin Moore is laughing. Probably waiting tables too, but hey. =) Anyway, this is pretty much all bullshit stemmed from looking too far into the semantics of a song's title, but shit, what's the Jam for if not mind-mangling levels of inhuman scrutiny? Message-ID: Just out of curiousity (and I really should know this already): When can we find out how DT did on the album charts for this past week? (Like Billboard or, um... something?) I'd just like to know. Also, In that JP interview just posted he talked about the Phish crowd and them camping out and whatnot, and I would love to see DT become more of a wicked live band. I'd love to see them with completely different setlists every night and do a LOT more improv stuff (REAL improv. Not pre-rehearsed improv.) It makes the tour stay fresh and exciting throughout (IMO). They sort of touched upon that during the "Home For The Holidays" shows in '95 and I would love to see them take it a step further. I know that on the FII tour (or whatever they're going to call it) I'll probably only go to one or two of the New England shows if they have the same setlist every night. On the other hand, if it were to be an "expect the unexpected" type of tour, I would see them as much as possible (and I would start trading tapes more often as well). I'm pretty sure the band would prefer it this was as they wouldn't just be churning the same songs night after night. Just a thought. Anyone agree? I call up WNCX 98.5FM and ask him if he has the new DT. He tells me that BMS is cued-up and is going to be the next song ON THE AIR! YES! There is a god and he listens to DT in Cleveland! Message-ID: All right, I know this is not what YNM is meant to be about (at least I don't think so), but while reading the lyrics it struck me as funny. What if JP and Desmond Child were venting about the relentlessness of advertisements?! OK, it's a long shot, but there may be someone out there who finds this funny. Well, here goes: Being round you is driving me crazy (I don't know about any of you, but commercials drive me crazy) Watching you run is making me lazy (All the people trying to sell you stuff dancing on the screen, while you're vegging out watching TV) You're trying to buy a piece of my head Selling me lines I've already read (I know the liners say "Telling" rather than "Selling", but I hear an S) Speaking my name to try to confuse me (Why is it that the commercials seem to target me specifically...eerie) Say it again you're starting to lose me (Let me hear that catchy jingle one more time!) That's alright I'm okay It happens every single day (They've gotten used to being constantly nagged) It's all the same But I'm not blind (Ah ha... you just want me to buy what you're selling!) It's all about you not me (Again...you just want my money, you don't care about me as a unique individual) It's all about the things That you're expecting me to be (You are placing social pressures on me to look a certain way with the clothes I buy and the toothpaste I use and the car I drive) There's not enough time to live (I don't have enough time to buy or do everything you want me to) And all that you're expecting me to give (How much is that again? My pockets are only so deep) It's all about you not me It's all about you not me You're building my prison brick by brick (You're clouding my thoughts commercial by commercial) Eating your words is making me sick (Self-explanatory) You get what you want Cause nothing is sacred (THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR! And you'll step over your own mother to get one) You're reading my mind And leaving me naked (All this psychological mumbo jumbo! Stop the mind games! How can you sleep at night?!) You say I gotta give before I receive it (No cash on delivery if you know what I mean. No deposit, no return) One of these days I'll believe it (Make the jingle go away! Maybe if I buy the product, the voices will stop) Yes, I have way too much time on my hands! At least this way I can listen to FII more. And for those of you still reading, I don't seriously think this is what the song is about, but maybe, just maybe... -~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_- | Robert Taylor The world may seem flown away | | email_address_removed Almost as if it cannot be saved | | The Phoenix Will we be able to rise | | From these ashes we've sown | -~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_-~-_- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Sep 1997 00:10:44 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Ernesto Schnack) To: Subject: Re: John Petrucci talks about FII - Part 1 Message-ID: > Q: Do you sing? > > JP: Yes...I'm not going to sing tonight, though. Message-ID: Well I just got FII today, and the minute I saw the logo, Ithought "It's out of focus" Really, it's the same logo, more or less. Ok, it's not exactly what it would look like out of focus, but I think that's the effect they wanted to give. About the production...I like it, except for the low end. Instead of making your chest thump it kinda clogs your ears. But what I love is that hear EVERYTHING Mikey does on the drums. In BMS, the fill MP does b4 going into "Twisting,turning,...", I hear this noise there. Everytime he played that fill, I thought somebody was opening my door. Weird. Towards the end of HK I hear a hint towards the "Battered and bruised" part on PS. LITS is sooooooo fucking cool. I haven't had that much adrenaline flow thru me in a while. The chorus to JLMB should become our little ytse-prayer...seriously:) This album has a lot of venting...and i agree with a lot of it. The lyrics to NM are exactly thge feelings I've been having as of late. things have to change. YNM...It describes exactly a person I know. As generic as they sound, I like the lyrics...But i'd like to hear the un-Desmondchild-ized version. That's it for now...this album rocks too much.
