I have that one and I'm not *too* excited about it... It's definitely not a bad album, but for me it sounds a bit like 80s hard rock with a few prog influences and since I'm not such a big fan of 80s hard rock it doesn't do very much for me. And regarding the Paradise Lost thread, they're one of my favorite bands. Everything from "Gothic" to "One Second" is really cool. "One Second" is definitely different, very song-oriented and laid back on the guitar, but still great. My only complaint is the drums--they do fit the songs and techno-ish feel, but I expected a lot more from Matt Archer. Jordan BTW, I love FII, esp. ANM, BMS, and Just Let Me Breathe. And unlike most people it seems, I love Take Away My Pain but hate Anna Lee. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 18:49:56 -0400 From: JB To: email_address_removed Subject: I'm laughing my ass off Message-ID: First off, that post from USENET was hilarious... then I get this... wow! Also, fire is timed, unlike the sea which is infinite. The human >soul, or spirit, might be considered timeless. And don't forget... there's a "sole" fish... so probably some witty double meanings there by the guys at DT...As for the burning part... those guys have been sitting on those posts for a while, and are probably sunburnt. ALSO -- IN FACT... SALT WATER BURNS!!!!! (like seawater in a cut) and there you go!! >Hell's Kitchen > >Hell is supposedly timeless, like the infinite sea. Yes, and of course, certain parts of the sea are heavily polluted, thus probably containing utensils and other things from the Kitchen (i.e. the kitchen garbage)... some people don't like the water, and thus it would be a hell of sorts... also... hell is said to be full of fire&brimstone (which burns), and sea water in a cut would burn... hey.... therefore, the sea is akin to hell, and the kitchen!!! WOW!!!! >Take Away My Pain > >Sometimes, for the pain to disappear, or to at least wane, a person >might want to go to a deserted island (yes, in the infinite sea). speaking of pollution, there's loads of hypodermic needles and things in the ocean, (even certain marine life) that could kill you, thus taking away your pain... >Just Let Me Breathe > >If you're drowning in the sea, you will need to breathe. Also, if you >are flying very high in the sky, you might experience the feeling of >lack of air. I don't know how many new fans they have picked up with the new sound, but from the people I have spoken too, they have lost many long time fans. Now I am hoping and I expect/hope a return to a more 'metal' sound with their next album. As for FII, I get the album later on today, however I won't be posting any 'first impression' reviews, I hate them, how many times do you like an album from the very first play, then months later get bored with the thing ? Those albums that get better with every listen, are for me the ones that go the distance, those albums (like Angra's) that every time you heard them you hear someting new are the albums that are favourites of mine. So I am hoping not to like FII that much after the first listen ! One more thing, every time I heard Savatage's 'The Wake Of Magellan' , I can hear the influence of STYX in some of the song's, which IMO isn't really a bad thing. Please, no more, 'I know a lot of other people will be as diappointed as me' posts, you can't speak for other's so dont ! :) gRaham_ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 18:50:56 -0500 From: Chris Ptacek To: email_address_removed Subject: "Our Spirit Dream Swims Upstream..." If I >want to listen to this kind of straightforward songs, I'll buy Rolling >Stones or Nirvana, but I doubt. I must say I'm disappointed. >I'll rather listen to Images and Words. This is what I love about the Ytsejam. There's an overabundance of opinions, and an even greater overabundance of ignorance. If you're of the mindset to respond to what I'm typing, please address the points and questions I pose, rather than just say "You're wrong, asshole." First, to Pasi specifically (The rest of this post is directed to everyone), please point out the parts of the songs that sound like Nirvana. Be sure to give us some reference, too. Give is the times on the Dream Theater song, and at least tell us what Nirvana song it sounds like. Even on the simpler music Dream Theater makes, it's still far more complex and well thought out than you give it credit for. People, if you're buying the Falling Into Infinity expecting Metropolis, or looking for 70 minutes of non stop shred YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE! It should be obvious to you by now IF YOU ARE a Dream Theater fan that Dream Theater is neither Megadeth nor Cacophony. They have changed dramatically over the course of their writing, not just because they're maturing as a band, and not just because they're getting better as musicians, but because they are consciously trying NOT TO RE-WRITE the same old music they've been making. Dream Theater thus far has proven itself NON REPETITIVE. That's a quality I cherish in music, with so many bands releasing the same song over and over again (Listen to the melodies and chord progressions on Jewel's singles). If you are knocking DT because they have some slow songs, you're quite ignorant. Dream Theater never, to my knowledge signed a contract that said "We will henceforth be a METAL band. We will not allow a song to go below 120 BPM..." I PRAY for some tempo variations. What about a slower tempo defaults a song to "bad" or "Grunge" (as they both seem to share the same meaning on this list)? Slowing the music down often makes it more dramatic and emotional. Speeding it up often makes it sound cheesy (Can you say Manowar?)... but still, it's the quality of the MUSIC that matters. If you disqualify music because of slower tempos, not only are you missing out on some really cool music, but you're also going to ignore some of the absolute most technical music that's ever been written. I've only heard about half of the new album so far, and it's been VERY complex (Pasi, maybe you're only listening to the drums and are somehow dissatisfied? You're not qualified to tell me that the guitar parts aren't as complex, and in some cases, more complex than I & W. I've been playing guitar for 9 years, and I think at this point I know what simple music is and what complex music is.) and VERY progressive. Perhaps some of you were introduced to Progressive music by Dream Theater. If that's the case, you might not have CLUE #1 what progressive music is. Do your research, and you'll see that the term has been flying about since the 70's (at least in Rock music... perhaps earlier in other genres). Progressive means to progress... to move forward. That REQUIRES CHANGE. For a band like Racer X to progress, for example, it would require the guitars, bass, and drums to have gotten more simplistic, thus allowing the music itself to become more complex. There is a homeostasis involved in keeping an album sounding mature. You all know that DT has not become lax, and they're still practicing their balls off, so certainly they're CAPABLE of playing pure shred, polyrhythm-filled wankery. If being progressive means just being as intricate and complex across the board, with all of the solos shredding 16th note triplets at 208 BPM all the way through, why didn't Dream Theater do it? We know Petrucci can play that fast... why didn't he? _BECAUSE THAT WOULD BLOW_. Are you looking for a song, or are you looking for a challenge to the standard of "X is the best drummer ever" or "Z is the fastest guitarist in the world"? I don't get the impression that DT is trying to win a competition. I hear a band trying to make the music that they want to hear themselves. You may be able to play 90 notes per second, but if it doesn't sound musical, you suck worse than "Grunge" supposedly sucks. So tomorrow Falling Into Infinity is released in America, and within minutes of the release, ignorant Ytsejammers will write ignorant reviews about how bad the album sucks, because they know that everyone else on the list cares what they say about that kind of thing. But these same ignorant Ytsejammers who claim musical superiority (by virtue of the fact that they can play all of Awake and Images and Words FINALLY after years of work, and could play the stuff on Falling Into Infinity in their sleep, because it's so "grunge") still have nothing to show for themselves. Maybe it's jealousy, because they're too insecure about their own playing to realize that sometimes a polyrhythm can fuck up the whole mood of a song, where a simple 4/4 rhythm makes it PERFECT. Regardless, just because YOU may think that a band has to show off, and prove its technical ability on every song of every album, doesn't mean that you know jack shit. - Drizzt Du'Urden Ptacek Tidbit O' the day: On their album _Candyman_, the band Los Lobotomys (featuring Steve Lukather and Simon Phillips) there's a reasonably long song called "Party in Simon's Pants" (instrumental, thank God) in which the main chorus/theme of the song is played in 17/8. Merely LISTENING to this song may tie your fingers to your toes as you count along. (It happens to be extremely well written, so it's not just good for having such bizarre time sig!) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 16:49:49 -0700 From: Shane Liebling To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 2994 Message-ID: >I know exactly what you mean.
