John Arch (close friend of the band who had left FW not long before) was the first notable person that they worked with after Charlie - among other things, he didn't work out due to his wanting to focus on his family. Next up was Steve Stone who was fired immediately after the dreadful 6/9/90 gig (his first and only) with DT - known to Mike P. as the "Steve Stone fiasco". John Hendricks came next - dunno what happened with him. They then got Chris Cintron who seemed to be the right man and was a few short days away from becoming the official singer when James' demo landed in their laps. You know the rest... Hope you all enjoyed this little ditty of DT history... (no I wasn't saying that it dropped off staggeringly from I&W to Awake, just seemed like there were less songs whose lyrics really hit me as being very thought provoking... (though I did say that "a few from awake" were included in that "good" assessment... i.e. CiaW, LSoaD, Scarred).. this was meant (though possibly not clearly stated) that KM's lyrics dropped off somewhat in Awake as well... don't find any of his songs in Awake to be nearly as good as those in I&W... (in fact none of those I mentioned are KM songs, whereas the ones I mentioned from I&W in my previous post were mostly his I believe...) anyway, on to the next... >The point that I can factually rebut, is the comment about the lyrical >quality dropping off after Kevin left. Again, my main point was the general dropoff of KM in Awake and then onto FII (w/o KM)... I know ACOS was during KM... I was speaking from the 3 songs I'd heard up to that point of FII (most prominently YNM)... so I wasn't as confused as you may have thought :) Anyway, that comment was before hearing "Take Away My Pain"... Reading it today, I noticed that email_address_removed (I don't know how to take lines out of people's messages for my own nefarious purposes just yet) called John Petrucci the "crown jewel" of the band, with the disclaimer "not to take away from the others." He shortly followed this with a comment concerning the generalized sound of the band, pointing out that the "bass never stands out." ]From my bass-centric position as a bassist myself, I have to question what exactly these above quotes mean. Being a huge Rush fan, Geddy Lee is quite the exception to most bass players outside of jazz, in that the bass in Rush music does stand out in the mix. A good bassist, though, in most cases, does not and should not stand out--it's the nature of being a rhythm instrument. With that in mind, though, while using the same disclaimer and not take anything away from Mr. Petrucci, who never fails to impress, I can immediately think of several bands with guitarists who stand out and play music along the lines of JP. In that same vein, then, I cannot think of a single bassist who plays lines as complex and interesting as John Myung does, while at the same time utterly succeeds in holding down the bottom end. It's not even that nobody is similar (because, IMHO, JP stands out among all those like him)--what amazes me is that nobody comes close to JM. Nobody is doing it, largely because nobody can. As a crown jewel along the lines of musicianship, then, I just worry that JM might be getting sleighted. If, however, if "crown jewel" is meant as the jewel the shines the brightest among other priceless jewels, then yes, as the guitar is most prominently heard of all the instruments (by nature of its role in the music), then, I would have to agree with James. That's all for now. (I feel like I should be quoting lines from songs now, which everybody seems to do, but frankly, I don't see why.) Week 2 of the YFFL was as surprising as the NFL's Week 2 was. Pat Daugherty's Patsville Predators were beaten on Monday night performance by Jeff George by Robert Rivers' Hampshire Hounds 61-58. The 58 points scored by the Predators would have won 3 other games in the League this week. The brothers matchup of Jeremy Hallum's BU Blazars, and Ryan Hallum's Purple People Eaters was won by the Blazars 67-56 on the strength of the Patriots D. Heath Augustover's Northeast Storm destroyed Jason Hartman's Glen Burnie Liquid Shadows 72-38 to go to 2-0 in division play. J. M. Blevins' London Ultraviolence beat Dana Boisvert's Mill City Birds of Prey 50-40, and Kevin Madden's Cape St. Clair Musicsnobs squeaked by the Alabama Lines in the Sod owned by Mark Peters 35-30. Both winners are now 1-1 and both defeated are still looking for their first win. So after two weeks, here are the standings and points. West Points East Points Blazars 2-0 129 Northeast Storm 2-0 141 Hounds 2-0 111 Predators 1-1 156 Musicsnobs 1-1 89 Ultraviolence 1-1 105 Lines in the Sod 0-2 65 Liquid Shadows 1-1 88 Birds of Prey 0-2 63 People Eaters 0-2 105 Next week: Hounds vs. Lines in the Sod Blazars vs. Birds of Prey: Both games feature a winless vs. an undefeated team in the West. Important divisional matchups. Northeast Storm vs.Ultraviolence: Big point scoring game between the #2 and #5 point scorers in the league. Northeast Storm needs to win to stay 1 game up on the #1 scoring Predators. Musicsnobs vs. Liquid Shadows: Big game for both teams to stay 1 game back of the leaders. Predators vs. People Eaters: Predators will want to come back after a close game last week. The People Eaters can score points though, should be the closest game of the week. -jeremy +=====================================================================+ # grad student, Boston U. # "You've seen our Moon, # # Boston, MA 02134 # Now see our Johnson!" # # Astronomy # -seen on T-shirts all over Vikingland # #<*> Jeremy Hallum <*># referring to QBs W.
