For ordering information, please visit: http://www.geocities.com/soho/2236 The page is updated daily with the exact status of your order (disc #, if I've received payment, whether I've shipped, and whether your disc is ready). I'm picking up the CD liners today, so every disc that I've received payment for (which is around 7 discs) will ship today. Every order I receive from today on will ship the same day, so if you order your disc Monday, and I receive payment Wednesday, you'll probably have the disc in your hands Friday or Saturday, depending on the speed of the mail. Rivera" To: Dream Theater Subject: Yet another response Message-ID: A man can only be so strong. After hearing everybody praise/bitch the 3 songs on www.scream.no, I finally broke down and downloaded the fuckers. If you're not sick of these "reviews," then please continue reading. If you are, in fact, sick of these "reviews," feel free to skip this message and read about DT's deteriorating lyrics, deteriorating musicianship, deteriorating dietary habits, etc. New Millenium: This lets you know right off the bat that this is not your father's DT anymore. Myung is right out in front (for a change) with the funkiest bass line on any DT song (that I've heard) yet. Some trade mark DT time changes occur before the biggest shock out of all three songs occurs: James starts singing. But wait...I've never heard him sing like this before. There are harmonies, yes, but I found the harmonies to be very invocative of Alice In Chains (or Sebastian Bach's performance on Jacob's Ladder on the Working Man Album). The verses themselves don't really do that much for me yet, but the chorus is definitely growing on me ("I got this feeling...the tide is turning now baby"). Actually, it was cool to hear the word "baby" in a DT song. It sounds like this song is done tongue-in-cheek, but I could be wrong about that. It's during the instrumental section, however, that things become pretty interesting. Actually, they become pretty fuckin' cool. There is some weird....thing...that happens. I want to say it was a spoken word section, but I couldn't really hear well enough through my little piss-ant speakers. But it sounded like there were a lot of background effects/noises that are going to take multiple listenings to fully appreciate. What happens next is the funkiest, dirtiest, nastiest, PHATIST groove I've heard in a long time. It's very 70's in tone, but it's very DT in performance. Some amazing runs, complements of JP and DS. There is an UNGODLY (that's a good thing) breakdown where either JM or JP lays it right in the pocket with Mike grooving right along. All in all: thumbs up from me. Just approach it with an open mind. Hell's Kitchen: Hmmm....having attended two Fix shows (and acquiring a boot of one of them) I've heard most of this before. Is it just me, or did anyone else get the feeling that this song never fit at all with BMS? When I heard them first go into it at a show, I thought it was a completely different song. Well, it is now. Makes me wonder if they ever intended it to be a part of BMS at all. Anyway, some very cool stuff from JP on this one, and the sounds DS is using are perfect. Of special note is an absolutely INSANE build-up (if you've heard it, you know what I'm talking about). I haven't tried to count it yet and I won't attempt to until I'm in a particularly adventurous mood. All in all: Thumbs up, but it's not my favorite DT instrumental (that would be Erotomania). Take Away My Pain: Here it is. I can't remember a song which has caused so much distress in YTSEland. It seems like I am one of the few that loved this song in its original version at the Fix shows. It was actually my favorite of the new stuff that night. Well, it seems like DT took a cue from the electric version of "The Silent Man" and changed this one around BIG TIME. I'll admit, I miss the quiet beginning of the original version. The beat MP is doing is cool, but as a whole this song suffers from overproduction. It seems like they tried to tweak it so much in the studio that it lost some of the magic that drew me to it in the first place. It's still catchy as hell and lyrically it is very touching. I guess I'm so used to hearing it as a power-ballad type of song that this is going to take some getting used to, though it retains it's power-balladness during most of the choruses and the solo (which is amazing). All in all: a cautious thumbs up. I'll wait till I hear it in full before passing judgement. In closing, it seems we've got one hell of an album on our hands. It's different than what we're used to from DT, but different is a good thing. I can tell this is an album which is going to piss a lot of people off (if it hasn't already) and is going to make other people shit themselves. I suppose that's a good thing either way. At least people are reacting. Here's to the 23rd!!! Message-ID: Hi, I was interested to read that some Jammers can't get on with Awake because of the production/mix etc. I happen to think that Awake probably has the best production I have ever heard on any CD. You can hear every instrument/vocal part perfectly and it has a very clean sound. I found that IAW got a bit muddy in places (particularly with that triggered drum sound). Sure - I think that Awake is more guitar oriented but the keys offer so much in depth and texture to the whole feel of the piece, I can't fault it. Some people have been saying that the Lyrics have been going down hill as well - I just can't agree, I mean, if Voices doesn't make you sit down and think - nothing will (IMHO). It will be interesting to check out the lyrics on the new CD (if any of us UK Jammers can get the fucking thing!). I digress, Dave (a UK Jammer). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Sep 1997 11:26:05 -0700 From: O-P Komonen To: email_address_removed Subject: wanted:record company info... Derek IS an awesome player, he plays Moore's parts pretty good, but from what I've heard until now, he doesn't have Moore's style, his speed during the leads, and he has a much more jazzy approach to composing his parts of a song ... >BTW, I think Awake was their best album, by leaps and bounds. yes! rock! finally , i thought i was the only one here who thought this... btw, any other weirdos like DT's stuff in this order : Awake/WDADU/ACoS/I&W ? They recorded them in the Avatar studios, being produced by Kevin Shirley, who also produced Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and Ozzy Osbourne ... It seems that this time, Dream Theatre will go for a softer sound, having included on their new album EVEN a ballad' .... my , oh my! can you imagine that ? one WHOLE ballad on FII ? ;) god, this is really different than the other albums ... there weren't any ballads on those ! no way! ok, that's about it from me... take care and stuff and ytse on... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Sep 1997 02:39:20 -0700 From: email_address_removed (Dr. Mosh) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Inside Information on David Prater Message-ID: Yeah well... Case in point: I tried to special-order Oh, what a great point. I can't believe I forgot this. I went to a chain store on LI a few weeks ago and was surprised to see a long-haired guy working there. (Not a hippie long-hair, mind you, but a metal-lookin' long-hair.) So, I asked if the store had heard anything about any DT singles on sale, and he said, "No, but FII will be out on Sep. 23rd, and I can't wait!" I almost fell over. "it's called 'Smells Like Children.'" Augh! Ouch! You ever go into a store, pick the obviously least-clued-in clerk and ask for shit like Lemur Voice, Anacrusis, and other cool stuff that no one can spell, just to see what the guy does? Oh, here's a horror story for ya. Just the other day, I was in a CD shop here in Wmsbg when I started humming along with the PA music. Lo and behold it was "Force Ten" by Rush. So, I go to the nearest clerk, holding two damned Rush cd's in my hand, and say, "Hey, who picks the music that gets played on the PA?" The guy says to me, "Oh, it's just the tape that the parent company sends us, and we have to play it till we get sick of it." My roommate took one look at my eyes and started figuring out where to raise the bail money.
