Elektra's web site...Web sites are the LAST thing a non internet-based business updates or cares about. I work at a TV station, and our web site sucks, and no one cares...it's what's on the air that matters. Elektra will do the retail and radio promotion (that's what matters) and then worry about the web site, only us cool people with computers and a good taste in music care about it, and if we want info on DT, we go to the webring, or the official site, right? People that want to buy the CD will go to the store and look at it and if it's a cool store, listen to it, not read some crap that the record company controls. Yea, it'd be cool if it were updated, but hey, all the other band's stuff is probably outdated on their site too. (or whatever... just my opinion to the above) I got my promo advance copy of FII on Friday, and then had to take a 2 hour drive, what a great way to listen to a CD for the first time... heehee sounds great! and I'm STILL Listening to it. My faves are LITS and JLMB. I'll spare you from the review... it just rules, that's all I'm gonna say. This is what the back of the Jewel Box says... (get out your Thesaurus, whoever wrote this likes adjectives) With their epic songs and dazzling virtuousity, Dream Theater have earned a reputaion as *the* progressive band of the '90's. Their spectacular instrumental prowess and passionate vision have pushed the boundaries of composition and performance to dizzying new heights. Over two albums, an EP and countless tour dates, Dream Theater have built a rabidly zealous following, selling gold and filling concert venues worldwide. Their new album *Falling Into Infinity* shows the band to be in top form, wrapping their superb musicianship around a set of smart, solidly crafted rock that is their most accessible yet. The album was produced by Kevin Shirley, who has worked on hits by Aerosmith and Silverchair. All the songs were written by the band except "You Not Me," which was written by Dream Theater and Desmond Child. The song "Lines In The Sand" features guest vocals by Doug Pinnick of King's X. Dream Theater will tour soon after the album's release. "Burning My Soul" is the first single from *Falling Into Infinity* that's all folks! I donīt agree with your point of view, but I respect it. I have to congratulate you on your welldone arguments, youīve almost conviced me. But my opinion is still the same, and itīs the following: I think this question is about TASTE, and not if itīs "pure art" or if itīs not. The question of being subjective or objective, abstract or realistic, to use simbolism or to go straight to the point, does not define if any piece is art or not. These factors define the STYLE of a piece, of an artist and even of an age. Actually, the history of art is marked by the up&down of those factors. The Barroque was full of ornaments, religiosity, contrasts, subjectivity. The Classicism was replet of light, rationalism, objectivity, beauty. Another time, the Romantic era bring back the subjetivism, mixed with simbolism, passion and pain. And again, to beat the era of the dreamers, born a more realistic art, with a lot of criticism and objectivity. And it goes on and on and on...... During all this time, several fantastic men create MASTERPIECES in styles that could be completely diferent. And among these masterpieces, a lot of them contains HISTORICAL REFERENCES, tell or show CONCRETE FACTS, have pointless references to facts of its AGES. And they are not dated because of this. Itīs just a style to express yourself. What I want to say itīs that these artworks transmit TIMELESS ideas and feelings by telling or showing concrete facts. Shakespeare showed off the deepest feelings of men telling stories, with a lot of historical and pointing references, and not by saying free words about feelings. Tolstoi, Dostoievsky, Victor Hugo, and many others tell their stories behind a strong historical context with lots of pointing critics about their days. They did, besides artworks, portraits of their ages. In this kind of art you can realize the timeless ideas, the message, the feeling through the FACTS told. In MUSIC: Tchaikovsky and Beethoven put a lot of historic and pointing reference in their pieces (1812 , Eroica, Pastoral). And, for godīs sake, THESE GUYS ARE NOT DATED!! Man, I know thereīs a lot of abstract, subjective and simbolistic art, And I love some of that too. Thatīs why Iīd like to say this is a question of TASTE, and no a question of being or not "pure art". You can prefer some style of art, but the others styles will continue to exist. Thereīs millions of diferent forms to express oneself, to touch other people. And it can be in a subjective, objective, simbolistic or realistic way. It doesnīt matter!! For me, being an artwork donīt depend on how itīs look like, but on how it was done and on what impact it has in other people. If something was done with real love, honesty, will, technique and inspiration and if it can touch peopleīs soul deeply, so thatīs art. In any way it is. I donīt know if my poor English could express clearly my ideas. I donīt want to be right. Itīs just my opinion. Clark, donīt consider the capitals any anger or claim on you. Itīs just to emphasize some ideas. Well, anyway I still have some doubts about the real meaning of ART (Whatīs good and whatīs not good? Why?). But itīs another storie... Stravinsky is god, unfair comparison :) Seriously, I think it might depend on what Bach you've heard. I have 2 bach CDs that I can think of off the top of my head. One is a bunch of organ solos (fugues and stuff) that don't speak to me much emotionally, though they are interesting and impressive. The other is Lara St. John performing partita no. 2 in D minor and sonata no. 3 in C major on solo violin, and it's bloody awesome. Keep in mind that back wrote about twenty zillion pieces, so odds are some of them won't withstand the test of time as well. I can't say much about Mozart, he never really did much for me. With rock music, though, because the genre is "developing" so quickly (thanks to mass marketing, short attention spans, and new technology), it's easier to sound dated. It seems to me though that the bands that sound dated ten years down the road are the ones who cash in biggest on the trends of the day. For example, take two seventies bands like Led Zeppelin and the BeeGees, and, well, I don't think I really need to say any more about that. I think DT will be okay, since thus far their appeal and focus has been musical rather than stylistic. If they were going to sound dated, they would sound dated already, since their sound evolved primarily out of 70's prog and 80's metal. > And besides, how else could you refer to Cobain and MTV? Well, as far as I've noticed, most Rush fans don't even consider them because they 'play for the sake of playing' yadda-yadda-yadda. This album is definitely DT most emotional work, and it might at least turn SOME heads. And in the long run, the best thing for DT would be to tap into the Rush, Floyd, (add any other 70's prog band) fans. They would understand DT much more than the MTV crowd. take away my paaaaaaaaaaain that songs rules! Ernesto ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Sep 1997 22:53:45 -0400 (EDT) From: "John R. This doesn't mean that the lyrics have ditereated, actually good writers have trouble using rhyme, because it's much more difficult to get a cross what you're saying and making it sound good by using rhyme. Now I haven't heard much of the lyrics, but I know in the past DT has rhymed throughout the song, but not the whole song. It's just an artistic point of view, is the way I look at it. To rhyme or not to rhyme, what's the difference as long as it sound good. (which by the way that did not, but I'm tired as hell) I think what matters is if the writer gets across what he/she wants and that person is happy with their work, then great...they've done what they've wanted. later all, Bruce D. Cook" To: Dream Theater Subject: DT, popularity and other such ramblings Message-ID: Hey Folks, Just a few thoughts (all MHO, of course) on all the stuff flying around the jam... All this mention of people not wanting DT to become "too popular" blows my mind... This goes along the same lines as the idea that things are always going commercial, selling out, etc... I understand none of this. The popularity of DT is directly proportional to how many more albums we (the fanatical, obsessed fans) will be able to get our grimy hands around. Now, how does this success come about? A lot of you seem to think it's from DT changing their music. While every band matures and grows, the music may be a little different than before, I always view it as a progression; adding layers to the cake, so to speak. I think commercial success is more related to the tastes of the norm than DT (or any other band) trying to mold their sound into something that will sell. Look at the things that have been popular, through the 80s until now... I've watched the popularity shift from cheesy hair rock to distortion laiden grunge, etc. I think the success of DT depends on immersion into the populous at the key time. I think the time is pretty good right now. People seem more open to hearing new sounds, distortion is no longer the devil. I think also that grunge is going to give way to more technical music, I can already hear this with some of the stuff that's coming out and being popular.. I now hear songs that have guitar solos in them.. Imagine that! GUITAR SOLOS! So, basically what I'm saying, is that all of this talk about selling out and making things more commercial is bogus... If the maturity of the band matches up with the ever-evolving taste of the people, DT will rocket to the top. As for those people who don't like the new sound, etc... like I said, everyone's taste evolves and changes all the time... the people who don't like the new sound, perhaps their taste is evolving differently; going in a different direction than our favorite band... I personally LOVE the sound of the new stuff... I've continually gotten the same feelings of excitement from every new DT album as it comes out. Hearing PMU on the radio for the first time, then Lie, and now the ra files of BMS, YNM, and PS... It's all DT in their finest. They've progressed, and I've progressed, happily we're progressing in the same direction. Just my $.02... er, maybe more like $.10 ;) waiting impatiently for the 23rd...
