Message-ID: Ahoy, What's this talk about Lemur Voice being a clone? I have to disagree thoroughly. Marcel has got a great soloing style - it's awesome, and it's not copying any of Petrucci's solos. I can't really see the reason for calling them a DT clone. To me they are an awesome prog metal band with a hell of a CD. Anyone agree/disagree? · • Colonel Mustard • · ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 1997 22:13:35 -0500 (CDT) From: Jonathan Case To: email_address_removed Subject: DT new CD --> a disappointment? And other ramblings.... Message-ID: In response to Clark Abel: I agree with your comments on art-forms in music and such. Instrumental music generally influences me the most with what I listen to. I don't key in on the lyrics so much. Although a few exceptions to note are the really good DT songs, such as Surrounded and Learning to Live. I think the lyrics went downhill with Awake, and it sounds like they will deteriorate even more with the new CD. I'm really worried that they are beginning to make the transition to conforming to grunge and crap like that. It will be particularly devestating if they start creating many songs with choruses constantly repeating, and from reading people's comments, it looks like that's what YOu Not Me and Burning My Soul are like. Damn, that sucks. In response to Pedro Filipe on beats per minute vs. quarter notes per minute: I've seen quarter note per minute typically, but beats per minute is more general. Sometimes in 6/8 time, the 8th note will be specified for the metronome speed. Usually students are taught with 1/4 as the metronome speed since it's the most traditionally used style. -Jon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Sep 1997 00:45:29 -0300 From: "alves" To: Subject: Greets/Original Musical Tastes Message-ID: Hi guys, I´m a new jammer (it´s just my second message) and I´d like to greet you all, survivers of this poor world, covered by crap, narrow-minded people and commercial stuff. I´m a DT fan since 1993.It was incredible to discover a band who could put virtuosity and talent together, not just a "heros" band, but making a new and creative kind of music. And how someone had already said in this list, this is not very often nowadays. One thing that´s interesting about DT is the "source" of his fans, what were their original musical tastes before they meet "the real thing". It´s easy to see , because of the DT influences, the most of its fans used to list progressive or heavy metal stuff, or both. I realized, reading this list, the majority of the jammers has a more progressive taste. It´s interesting because here in Brazil the public of DT is basically formed by people who used to listen more heavy stuff. The amazing thing is that DT made the bridge between the styles and it take people discover new and incredible things in both sides. Anyway, I don´t know if this "labels" make any sense nowadays. It was just my useless thoughts. Up the irons, people of South America!! At least in Brazil, Dream Theater has a extremelly good image among the musical specialized media. I mean, they´re not played in the radiostations, just in programs specialized in heavy stuff, but they were cover of a heavy rock magazine some months ago and they have lots of fans, specially among musicians and lovers of heavy (but audible) stuff. Now, THANKS GOD, DT is coming for their first shows in Brazil (maybe the first in South America, do you know??). The new single (I think it´s BMS) is gonna be played tomorrow night in a rock radiostation. The CD may be released with some delay, but I´m gonna buy an imported one for sure. My god, it´s a lot of emotion in just few days. I´m getting crazy!! "You can feel the waves coming on It´s time to take the time" (You know who is, I´ve just listed it now!!) The Palace website, giving the order of service, states "The congregation will remain standing as the cortège leaves the Abbey, as the choir sings extracts from Shakespeare's Hamlet and the Orthodox Funeral Service, set to music by John Taverner: Alleluia. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. Remember me O Lord, when you come into your kingdom. Give rest O Lord to your handmaid, who has fallen asleep. The choir of saints have found the well-spring of life, and door of paradise. Life: a shadow and a dream. Weeping at the grave creates the song: Alleluia. Come, enjoy rewards and crowns I have prepared for you." He seems to have written a selection of funeral music and its not obvious at first which piece this came from. I agree. I've always thought of > these guys (DT) as being kind of visionaries (go ahead and laugh, I'm serious) I think one of the beatiful things about music is that it reflects the state of society in that point in time. Baroque music (like Bach) was heavily ornamented, just like everything else in that era, and so on. > But I'm getting way off topic here. My point is this. There letting out their frustrations out, very straight to the point. I like that. It's about time they do something like that. And I don't think the whole album is like that, but I don't really know. > sense of timelessness, and as a result, any possibility of being "pure art" to > me. "Pure art", I suppose, would be music written purely for the sake of the pure art is something really hard to define. To me, if the artist is talented enough to express himself, is displaying his emotions thru his art, and, most importantly, is being honest, then it's art. What i mean by being 'honest' is that he plays what comes naturally to them. And i really feel that's what DT are doing. I was also thinking about how all of us where bitching about how the music industry sucks, etc, etc. But, think about it. DT aren't rich, but they are making a living out of there music. Isn't that good enough? Of course, that could change in the future, but what I'm saying is that the industry has warped what success means. In a world where millions of record sales world-wide is considered 'success', one tends to forget that just being able to make a living entirely out of your music is quite and accomplishment. thaat's it form me, Ernesto ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Sep 1997 02:27:43 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Ernesto Schnack) To: Subject: Thal, Keneally, TLF Message-ID: Okay, thanks to Mr. Ptaceck I just finished listening to both Ron Thal and Mike Keneally and i have only one thing to say: FUCK! thes guys are truly something else...musically unbelievable, and funny at the same time. I put all the information about it on a website to save Jam space. I don't want to clutter an imminent monstrosity. I built the page in 20 minutes (it's 5:00am and I can only think about sleep right now). And since it's so late, I don't have the time to find out how to get my page up on my ISP, so I'm putting on a Geocities account that I created over two years ago (and it's still alive, amazingly). It's located at: www.geocities.com/soho/2236 It has ordering information, technical details, and (most importantly) a comprehensive listing of the status of orders (disc number, whether you've paid yet, whether the disc has been shipped yet, the date you reserved the disc, as well as your name (duh)). This will be updated every two or so days, so it will always be relatively current. The page was a rush job, so it is just a rough sketch of what will come. E-mail me with any questions you might have at email_address_removed. And just as a reminder, the printer says the liners won't be ready until around the 10th, and once I get them in, the bulk of the CDs will get sent off that day. D. This is the sort of comment that I don't really like. If DT didn't have any commercial success with the album, then good luck to them in getting into the studio again. There are few things I would like more than to see DT get a hit with FII and become one of the major heavy rock/metal acts of the nineties. Audiences are starting to get tired of grunge and alternative bands now and, from what I've heard of it, FII will be the perfect album to get new fans to like great music again. I don't think reference to current events is any different that references to (or songs about) historical events. Learning To Live is bad and something like Maiden's "Alexander The Great" is good simply because one is topical and one is historical? In my mind, the lyrics to a song are simply the band saying words that they think need to be said. Whether they are poignant, topical, whimsical or whatever is really irrelevant as long as they serve the intended purpose. If you say that a certain range of topics is off-limits to the lyricist, you are essentially stifling his/her creativity - not allowing them to use all the tools at their disposal. Noone would suggest that DT's music is not "pure art" because the members use electric instruments, sound samples, and a high-tech modern drumkit.
