A bad snare sound really puts me off a recording, and the snare on ACOS really annoyed me the first time I heard it - too much ring and too much of a note - and I still don't like it now. The snare sounds on IaW and Awake were both perfect, so I'm hoping the snare on the new album is along those lines. I gather some people like snares to have a note and a ring to them... strange. ;-) -- +--Andrew Berry (webmaster, Metal Links) ----------------------------------+ | 4700 links to metal pages - http://www.aberry.demon.co.uk/metallinks/ | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | "I'm closing all the doors while my frown remains, | | Until I reach my golden haven I'll let the sadness pass my way." | +----------------------------------------------------- Paradise Lost ------+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Sep 1997 13:26:49 +0200 From: Francisco Miguel To: email_address_removed Subject: UAGM MIDI Message-ID: I recently downloaded a few different versions of the 'Under A Glass Moon' MIDI , but some of them have some really strange errors. I am totally pumped for this new album!!! A couple things: Dream Theater will be on tour again in the cold and icky months (screw you, CA and AZ type people who don't get bad weather. :) So it has become a pressing thought to me that we might consider making a new line of ytsejam shirts, in a very limitted run, on long sleeve t's instead of short sleeves. New design and everything. Anyone else think this might be a good idea? Something with Majesty symbols down one sleeve, or something cool like that... And my new "end of post" idea: From now on I will include a piece of trivial music-world knowledge at the end of each post (if I can remember to do so). Since this is fun information, I'd like to see some other people do it too. I know some of yall are storing up nuggets of silly band facts and stuff. A New Millenium --- This is an excellent song! It combines the sounds of both Awake and I&W in parts, and then goes off into it's own thing with even parts with just Myung and Portnoy that are DAMN groovy! NO ONE will be disappointed by this one! Superb guitar/keyboard harmonies in the instrumental section between John and Derek ala Metropolis... just fantastic kick your ass song man... 2. You Not Me --- Everyone has heard enough about this one or has heard it already. It is starting to grow on me... 3. Peruvian Skies --- The beginning of this song TOTALLY reminds me of "Bleeding Me" by Metallica, does anyone else agree? Well, it gets real Floydish throughout the first half and especially the chorus, but the second half it gets heavy and damn cool!!! The chorus is resung over a fast tempo with a take the time pace and it is GREAT!!! 4. Hollow Years --- Hmmm... I like this one. The Spanish guitar is classy with a nice feel to it w/ the keyboards... real commercial though... almost like "La Isla Bonita" by Madonna, or that one Bryan Adams song, I think "Have you ever really loved a woman " or something... but it is done in the style of DT and is REAL catchy so I like it, FOR NOW... 5. Burning My Soul --- Now this is another one that I really dig... The bass is really present on this album and totally on this song! It is REAL heavy and menacing... a really cool verse groove too, but it is almost like White Zombie, like the verse riff to "More Human than Human" if there was guitar with the bass... The chorus is so cool with a lot of energy ala TTT or UAGM and when KJLB sings "Burning my Soul..." I think it is MP who does backing vocals in baritone. Very cool solo by Derek in the middle too. 6. Hell's Kitchen --- YESSSSSS!!!! Great totally emotional instrumental! Very triumphant sounding, just great! especially the last 30 seconds or so. Just awesome... wait and see! 7. Lines in the Sand --- This is a very good prog/bluesy song with a lot of changes... I am sure this one has a lot of potential to be my fave, it is just gonna take some getting used to because it has such a new sound to it. Total Derek influence in this one. Doug P. rocks! Cool middle slow solo by Petrucci. 8. Take Away My Pain --- Isn't this one supposed to be sad, about JP's fathers death? But even if it is happy about death... This one is just commercial, happy in almost a cheesy way man... NO ONE is this happy about someone dying... THere is some sadness in the solo by JP though and that is a real bright spot in this song... Otherwise, I can really take or leave this one... 9. Just Let Me Breathe --- This one moves so fast it tears yer nads off!!! It is real cool, but just seems to move by so fast... and the vocals are all over the place, not sung but like talked in a fast pace, just REAL different... gonna have to be heard... Kick ass soloing once again though! 10. Anna Lee --- A lot like queen and Elton John like everyone else has been saying... This is another one I can take or leave though so far... haven't really gotten into it as much as the others... Begins with piano and then ends up with the whole band at the end... 11. Trial Of Tears --- WOW!!!!! Prolly my fave presently... just fantastic... made up of three parts 1. It's Raining... 2. Deep in Heaven 3. The Wasteland . Catchy in some parts and total soloing in others... in the beginning and end it is totally like Xanadu by Rush with the temple blocks Portnoy uses and like the effects... total new age... but damn great... I LOVE IT, AND YOU WILL TOO!!! hehe, :P Well, there ya got it, my semi-brief summary of the new album... Hope I didn't piss anyone off! Hope someone found this post useful! All I have to say is that they are an amazingly powerful band live. I really don't know a lot of Marillion, I only have one cd (Afraid of Sunlight), but I decided to go to the show anyway. I didn't stay 'till the end 'cause I was with my sister and her friend, and they could only take so much of my kind of music. Actually they both said that Marillion was really good, but they're not much for watching bands live (more the dance club type). Anyway, I was really impressed with the club. It's called the Spectrum, and it used to be an old church. The entire time I was thinking that this would be a great place for DT to play. I think it held 1400 or so. So if that is the kind of size of clubs DT is going to play, I think it would be perfect. Nice big stage, and plenty of room in front of it. Anyway, that's all for now. -Brian Anderson p.s. He goes in and out of time, and he is NOT doing 128th-note syncopations. > If there were he would have recorded it over!!!!! Then tell me why, in the same part, they didn't rerecord James' vocals. In the "life goes on the offbeaten track" and "even though I'll be gone..." parts his pitch is bad. His voice sounds tired, and he is flat. Bands do NOT catch everything. When you're recording a 23 min.+ song, especially. > Duh!!!! Duh, yourself. > I have been quiet about all the MP bashing on his time and timing. IF THERE WAS A > MISTAKE IN THE STUDIO THEY WOULD HAVE RECOREDED THE SONG OVER. IF THEY LEFT > IT ON THERE IT WAS INTENDED TO BE HEARD THAT WAY. NO MISTAKES!!!!!!!! Bullshit. Everyone makes mistakes. When you're in the studio and have deadlines and it's 4 in the morning and you have to record a difficult drum part, you do the best you can. Maybe it's not perfect, but there comes a point where a drummer will say "close enough." I don't claim to know what the situation was at this point of recording ACoS, but I still contend that the timing wavers here. > By the way,I have been in the studio before. So I do have real perspective on > what goes on in there. They don't let obvious mistakes on the record. If that were true, there are many bands out there from whom we never would have heard anything, the very least of which being Led Zep and Nirvana. Who are "they", anyway? I NEVER said it was an "obvious mistake." It is a difficult part that, as it exists on record, is perfectly acceptable to the casual listener. Upon closer scrutinization, however, timing imperfections can be heard. Steve Z ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2925 **************************
