Dream Theater and "Promised Land" get connected once again. The tape copy of Awake that I mentioned before happened to be on the B side of a TDK tape. On the A side, there was Promised Land. I only intended to listen to "Promised Land" (loved it), but I hit the play/reverse button twice and ended up listening to Dream Theater. I remember thinking, "Wow! This instrumental really kicks! They've never done anything like this before!" Before I knew, the instrumental had developed into Voices. I thought Geoff sounded better than ever on it. So there. :-) Imagine my pleasant surprise: I really loved Promised Land and adored the new band I had just discovered for myself. Raitz "Some say I'm a horrible person. That is not true. I don't recognize anything off of No Exit. Now that I have 5 Fates CDs, I can more fairly rank the ones according to what I like best. 1) A Pleasant Shade of Gray (masterpiece and ranks in my best CDs of all-time!) 2) Inside Out. (This may be a tie between IO and Parallels) 3) Parallels. 4) Perfect Symmetry. (too much screaming, but progs awesome!) 5) No Exit. (WAY too much screaming, but rocks good!) While I'm on this topic, I might as well do the same for Dream Theater and Queensryche: (that way I can have some DT content) DT: -- 1) Images and Words (masterpiece) 2) Awake 3) A Change of Seasons. 4) Live at the Marque 5) WDADU Queensryche: ----------- 1) Empire 2) Bridge single CD (with full band version of Someone Else) (awesome CD for only 4 songs!!) 3) Rage for Order (Gonna Get Close to you is about the only song I don't like on this CD). 4) Promised Land 5) Operation: Mindcrime (I've never been much of a fan of this CD, that is, until I saw them live in Dallas a couple weeks ago!) 6) Hear in the Now Frontier (not that far behind, though. I'm liking it more and more lately) I had the Warning, but had to return it. Too much "80s screaming". Never heard their first CD. -Jon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 1997 17:38:27 -0300 (EST) From: Rogerio Brito To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Virus Warning !!! Message-ID: Hey, people. It is not possible for a virus to work on any platform that exists today. There are two or three factors that can guarantee that you can't have such a program: 1 - There are much more architectures out there than just our PCs. Sparcs, Alphas and Macs are some exemples. All these architectures have their own machine language that is different from each other; 2 - Even if we were running just one platform (say, PCs), the "virus" would have to be executable under Unices (Linux, Free BSD, Minix, Xenix (UGH!)) and DOS as well as Windows and OS/2; 3 - If your mail program executes any code as soon as you read the mail (be it by decoding the e-mail or by any other means), "put it in a trash can" :-) and get a better software that does *ONLY* what *YOU* tell it to do. And just a terminology point: a program that deletes your hard disk without you being informed is called a Trojan Horse and not a virus. A virus has to multiply itself to be called a virus (i.e., it has to follow the "cycle of life", reproducing itself and infecting some host program/file). On the other hand, Windows is a Trojan Horse. :-) So, I hope this is informative and if you have further questions, feel free to ask. New Millenium: kick ass, awesome, not much more to say You Not Me: skipped it. we all know that one already:) Peruvian Skies: one of my personal favorites. Starts out with a trippy, Floyd-ish vibe and ends with a crunchy stomp. Vinnie and Eckie will like this one:) I lost my connection and missed the ending. bummer:/ Hollow Years: I really can't say much about the ballads,, because i have to let them grow on me. They all seemed like they were good. This one has a Marillion-esque quality to it. Burning My Soul: a heavy one. I was disappointed that they changed the intro they used at the fix shows. I liked how it started really soft and then crashed into the gargantuan riff, oh well. Cool song in any case. Hell's Kitchen: I like how this fits with BMS. It's like a nice Coda. It starts out soft (with the old BMS intro :/) and grows slowly. I like the effect it gives. Take Away My Pain: Read my comment on ballads above. Sounded kind of adult contemporary-ish. Lines in the Sand: I love Derek's intro to this. Always have, always will. The song itself has a blues rock kinda vibe, but it's very progressive. In the middle it gets slow and builds up. The ending is very cool. Just Let Me Breath: awesome. Cool solos by JP and DS here. Short yet proggish. Anna Lee: Queen meets Elton John. I didn't pay much attention to this one, so i won't say anything else. Trial of Tears: this could very well be the song that ends up being my fave. It starts very softly and sloooooowly builds up. A looooot of emotion. both John and Derek shred it up big time here. Overall: This isn't a rock-your-nadz-from-beginning-to-end type CD. There are nadrockers, but there are the ballads to balance it out. There's a lot more emotion in this CD than any of there previous stuff. Sound: Well, it's different. Again. I like that. It deosn't sound like I&W. It doesn't sound like Awake. It looks like DT changes faster than Rush:) There's a lot more groove to this. The music has 70's vibe at times. The melodies are very 80's sounding. Is it prog, you ask? Yes definitely. But there's no more 'prog' sections. It's more sprtead out across the album. Hard to explain. What i mean is that there are few sections were they delibiretely go hay-wire...instead they'll do small pieces of it throughout the song. All in all, i'll say that this CD brings the 70's 80's and 90's into one nice package. Oh and there's no grunge in this record. really. none. nada. zippo. Just in case you were worried. ...and bassists will be very, very happy. oh yes. I saw the postcard. If that's the cover, at first i was disappointed, but now i must say. The cover goes with the music. just letting you breathe, Ernie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 1997 18:25:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Eric John Marlett To: email_address_removed Subject: DT fan spawned by radio... Message-ID: > yes-radio sux-and I gave it up ages ago! Glad to see there's others like > me out there! While I often curse the fact that a radio station that plays music I enjoy is about as rare as a monologue from Myung, at the same time I can't deny the fact that it was radio that first introduced me to Dream Theater. I know there are many out there who had the same experience, and speaking for myself, while I rarely have a moving musical experience while listeing to the radio, there are moments when that one gem sneaks through, and so I leave myself open to the possibility. Totally shutting yourself off from anything is only asking for you to miss something, so while I don't think the state of radio is anything to cheer about, I still listen now and then because, hey, you never know....(and thank you for playing NY Lotto...;) Eric email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Aug 1997 16:06:13 PDT From: "Stephanie Chi" To: email_address_removed Subject: sherinian birthday, fates Message-ID: read on a KISS website that Eric Singer threw Sherinian a pool and barbecue party for Derek's birthday.
