I have currently finished checking through Crimson Sunrise, Carpe Diem, The Darkest of Winters, and the Crimson Sunset. I've found several errors in all except for Carpe Diem. Currently checking Inevitable Summer (with errors again). I haven't revised any files yet (pen and paper right now), but I'm hoping that after Monday to have the revised files available to you. I may have a file available that contains some parts that I am really debating about how to transcribe. There are about 5 parts now that I am really debating about (strangely none of them are the real fast runs -- not that I can play the fast runs, but Petrucci is so darn clean in his technique -- most are chords). Now, let me divulge some of my transcribing secrets to you guys. First of all, check out http://www.replayinc.com/ . They have a program called CD-looper. It slows down the song up to 4X without lowering the pitch. The sound can be a little poppy, but definitely worth the $60 (?) price. They have a demo available. Check it out! I can't imagine transcribing a song without it now. The day of slowed down tapes is over for me. Petrucci's licks are easily figured out with this. In fact, only a couple of times did I have to slow it down to 3X. The bass might be more difficult even though the pitch is not dropped. The other program I use regularly is Tabestry, now known again as Bucket O'Tab. They can be found at http://www.his.com/~gse/bucket/ . Again they have a demo. It can import and export ASCII tab. It can handle 7 strings as well as insert odd time signatures. It can print out nice TAB!! It can play the music via MIDI (but it is not that great). Some of you may want to get this as well. Later, I will make my Tabestry files available on an individual basis for those who wish to get this program and get a "better than ASCII" version of ACOS to print out. Now...back to checking... \\||// ~~..'~ ( \ ) Brandon Vaughn \ c/ __\/__ "The Mad Tabber" / \ < . _ \ email_address_removed \ `\ \ -' / \ \ ,,,_ email_address_removed >|""O[|||||nn[:::< /_,--- ._\ '''''~ ~ | | | | | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 1997 22:09:28 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: IDEAL FOR BEGINNERS WORK-AT-HOME Message-ID: /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// This Message was Composed using Extractor Pro Bulk E- Mail Software. I did hear this song on the radio last night while driving back from Hannibal, MO (musical wasteland). That's a big deal for that area, too. Not only did I hear that, but I also heard Crue's Girls, Girls, Girls :) and a kick ASS instrumental version of Low Rider that has some ripping guitar playing on it (who was this? Anybody know? They didn't announce it, but it reminded me a lot of Steve Vai). Same station. It was 105.9 KZZK out of Quincy, IL. Usually what I refer to as a good synth I'll call a keyboard, and I'll call a mediocre one a synth. Not that the X5's mediocre, but heheh. My X3's a Music Workstation and can kick it's ass. :) Anything with a built in speaker and 32 note + polyphony is where I generally consider something a keyboard. In layman's terms they are convoluting towards exceeding the dimensional capacity limitations of phyical read/write data area on the compact disc and force the locations of the musical tracks to be recognized in quantam space. (Radio stuff and Message-ID: Man, you think this list is bad sometimes, try the South Park mailing list... if you don't know what South Park is, tune into Comedy Central Wed nights at 10p/9p central for the funniest cartoon since the Simpsons or B&B. (It's also on Sunday nights at 12a/11p central. That mailing list is mostly (stupid) AOLers and losers that can't cut out their headers. So be glad the 'Jam is so cool. :-) although it did take us 2900 or so jams to get to be this cool. Just saw tonight that ELP is playing in Milwaukee the 20th of Sept. Cool huh? But wait... guess who's in town at a different place that night? Yup, Marillion. Sigh... decisions decisions. FNM is on the 25th of Sept... Machine Head/Coal Chamber on the 23rd....Good week for shows in Milwaukee!! As for all this talk of Radio stuff. You might know that I host a radio show... It is on a non-commercial Community station in Madison, WI. I talk to record companies who market their albums to me. Any Major label that has a new album out calls me (or hires a few marketing companies to do it), e-mails me or sends me stuff to try to get me to play it and report to the Radio trades (to get good chart numbers)... and I'm only a Metal show. In the same vein, the higher priced departments at these record labels do the same thing, but on a higher scale to the more Rock orientated stations. These rock stations (the bigger ones at least) don't really have too much to say about what they play. These stations pay consultants who "test" songs in "listening auditoriums" and rate them into what Demographic the song fits into. Or something like that... these so-called music experts know the songs that people will like... So unless the program director at a particular station feels that a song will do well, and make it so people don't tune out. Tuning out is the worst thing for a radio station, and frankly for the average listener... long cool stuff from Dream Theater is too much for them to understand and they tune out. Until you are a "DJ", you don't know how stupid the average listener is... it's amazing that they found the station to begin with... Metallica "one" will be on, and someone will call up... "Can you play 'one' from Metallica?" that's just an example. As much as I love DT, they'll never be as big as Queensryche or Metallica or whoever... but with every Album DT gets bigger, and we can only hope it gets picked up somehow... too bad MTV sucks now... All Elektra has to do is pay MTV gobs of money to play the video... So, in other words... don't get on the DJ's case too much, they'll get fired if they play too much stuff that's not on their music log... call/write/e-mail the Program Directors... and if you live in Madison, WI... tune in after Sept. 9 to 89.9FM on Monday nights between 11p-2a... you'll heard DT. If yer not Madison, find your local college station...usually the person that hosts the show picks the music, ask them to play it! (The official Radio "ADD DATE" for DT is Sept. 9th...FYI) that's it for now... Matt P.S. I still like Mike Bahr...if he weren't around where would we get this high quality stuff from? If you don't like him or what he's doing, don't talk to him or buy his stuff.(I just *had* to get my 2 cents in on that matter) I STILL gotta get some money to him...maybe some OT at work next week will help. email_address_removed email_address_removed Personal Home Page: http://www.inxpress.net/~mattymo WORT-FM Mosh Pit page: http://www.inxpress.net/~mattymo/moshpit ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2913 **************************
