Sorry, >but I still think he misses this beat. Umm, perhaps he *meant* to not play a note there. In music notation that's called a rest, and it is placed in a piece of music just as deliberately as a note. This whole discussion is pointless anyway, because the only way a musician makes a "mistake" is if the piece of music is written out or is otherwise known to the listener beforehand (like they're playing a song live that's on a CD of theirs), and they don't play what you know they're supposed to play. Obviously, on a studio CD, no one but the band knows what they're supposed to play. I suppose you could second guess all you want, but until Portnoy himself says he didn't play something right on a CD, I would assume the CD performance is correct. ************************************************************* Ken McWatters email_address_removed http://www.angelfire.com/tx/kmcwatters Quote of the month: "Stayed up late last night / Lying here in bed Looking for words / To say the things I left unsaid" -Fates Warning, "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" ************************************************************* ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 1997 19:30:22 -0700 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Comments, Quotes, and Story Time Message-ID: Hi everyone, Quick comment on the "perfect" drummers thread, if you want a "perfect" drum song, look no futher then the new techno hit "Around the World." It's a waste of money and time. IT SUCKS! [disclaimer: The following does not include my opinion, just my experience of living in state with more drunk people than non-color blind people] Hehe, when I went to the opening night of Howard Stern's Private Parts, the trailers before the movie were so out of place. The final one(and the one that really got most of response) was for a Prince product. I say product because as soon as it came on people were throwing Great Danes(you know those dogs that sometimes get mistaken for skinny horses), and Rabbits(you know those cars that sometimes get mistaken for as 4 wheel bicycles) at the projection booth. Only thing I could make out, before the mass chaos, was one lone voice saying something like...Prince sucks! :) John McCabe email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 1997 20:37:05 -0400 From: Phil Carter To: email_address_removed Subject: Volare Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids... Extraordinarily talented bunch, with some insane time changes in their songs. This band is seriously tight -- there are very few groups I've seen turn on a musical dime so quickly and adeptly as this bunch. Plus the keyboardist, Pat, is a serious Rush fan and a genuinely cool guy. Volare's new disc "The Uncertainty Principle" should be out fairly soon on The Laser's Edge label.
