Message-ID: Hi, I've just got to work and read my usual three-jam fix with my finger over the down arrow ready for my normal "flame-skip-non-relevant-slag-bahr-yawn" mode to kick in.... ...and it didn't. THREE JAMS ON THE TROT - NO SHITE TO SKIP!!! In fact there was quite a bit of "happy families" going on - and about time too! On to the normal rantings - I have to agree with everyone saying that DT CDs just sound great everytime. I walk to work some mornings (not this morning 'cause it's pissing down in the UK) and when I do I always have my personal stereo with DT blasting. And I always end up wanting to walk past my office and just keep listening all day. Can't wait for the 23rd (or is it earlier? - I'll try and find out the UK release date today). Talk soon... S.W.I.F.T.Y." To: email_address_removed Subject: Portnoy did NOT make a mistake Message-ID: If he did, why did he play that part the same way on almost every live version of the song I have heard? The same goes for the similar accusation regarding ACoS. If you think about the drum part for a bit, and take into account the fact that Portnoy is musically gifted and is rhythmically insane, it is perfectly logical to assume that these parts appear on the albums the way they were intended to be heard. Well, just a quick notice that the web page has been updated. Some new things thereon... * Updates to the recently-added bootlegging guide * Mikey's Guide to CDR Media (commentary welcome and invited) * New CD updates and all that official stuff * Confirms that DT "Mosaic" is open for orders and such. Coming soon... * Scans of popular boot packaging so if you have a nice printer you can run off some sweet copies for yourself, or if you're just curious to see what it looked like * Hopefully, availability on Tap the Rockies, Tori Stories, and Animated. Message-ID: ** Reply to note from email_address_removed 08/26/97 11:55pm -0700 Hey, So, I read vince' post and I thought, what a fucking prick. Now, I thought about this before reading vinces post but after reading what vince wrote, I thought it would be a good idea to post this. Vince did somethin cool by writing into the radio station...and yet a few other people (can't remember their names) brought up points abotu being controlled by money, advertising and all that other bullshit. Then I thought about what that DJ dude said in vince' letter, "If the record company won't get behind them, why should we?" Well...we had one big victory with ACOS and I am sure that was a kick in the teeth to alot of people...and it proved one thing, DT fans can get the job done. Remember that mail in thing to MTV to get more metal video' played about a year and a half ago (I think it was some QR song) well, it would seem that ALOT of radio stations are on the web. How about, everyone I guess, signs up or something and we all send these stations email requesting the new DT songs. Not one big email full of names, but many many many seperate emails all requesting a single song or whatever songs from the new album they have. We just need to make a listing of all the radio stations on the web that do play rock music, it doesn't matter the style. Just request the hell out of it. If fans really do make up a band, then hey, we can do this promotion stuff ourselves. WHos' with me on this? I've heard good things about the album "Dragon's Secret" by the Italian band Skylark. I've been told or read that the music is like a cross between Angra and Symphony X, but that the production is cheap and crappy. So my question - can any of you good people recommend this album? Answers either to the Jam or to me here at the office. Review update: I recently gave the album 'Visions' by Stratovarius 7.5/10. I have since listened to this album a few times more, and I would now award an improved 9/10. But I still think that the speed/ power stuff is a bit overdone. Steve, Are you referring to the actual CD ACoS? Mike Portnoy's timing is NOT way off!! That's a ridiculous thing to say.....He simply syncopates the rhythm by accenting the second note of every triplet on the china type cymbal (not HH ot splash), but he still maintains the timing perfectly! Don't take this as a flame or anything. I'm a drummer and listen to and pick up on these type of deals..... Dream Theater does some composing by deliberately chopping off an eighth note of a sixteenth note (or adding one or the other), but still maintain the time. An example that I'm still struggling with is in "A fortune in lies". In the pre-chorus part, It seems as though they're chopping a sixteenth note off to make a 15/16 measure instead of 4/4 time. Anyone else notice this? Does it seem like 15/16 time or 4/4 time? -Jon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 08:28 -0700 (MST) From: "Edwin Voras" To: Ytsejam Subject: ELEKTRA and our favourite band. That'd be Marillion show number two for Adam. The first was an awe-inspiring experience...last night's performance may not have been quite THAT awesome, but it was awfully good. I UNDERSTAND why folks say the band is perhaps a little drab for their tastes, especially on the last few albums. On the other hand, I think Itchy's right about "Brave"...it really IS an album that demands close listening. Or, at least, close listening will be well-rewarded. I'm still partial to "Clutching at Straws" and "Holidays In Eden," but the whole catalog is just awesome. And they are miles from boring in a live setting. They're one of the most dynamic bands working and that sure comes through. I was impressed. Oh, and Enchant opened. They weren't half-bad, either. But you probably already knew that. I used to listen to the two semi-local rock stations (WAAF and WHJY), but now if they're playing crap, they're OUTTA THERE! To be honest, I very rarely listen to music on the radio anymore. I can't understand how an audiophile could listen to an FM radio broadcast of a great piece of music without yakking on their shoes. :) ----- _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________________ E-mail: email_address_removed IRC: DDictator WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html NP: Drain STH - "Horror Wrestling" ______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Aug 1997 14:17:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Damon Fibraio To: Too Much Coffee Man Subject: Re: Yes on the radio Message-ID: OK, I shall now broaden that question.
