Message-ID: Hey people! what's happening? There is some good news to report from the seacoast area of NH, ME, and MA. The rock stations, WHEB and Rock101, (I don't know the call letters! :) have been barraged with requests for the new Dream Theater song, 'You Not Me' I just called a few minutes ago and the guy almost yelled at me. He's like, "Damn it, like i've told everyone who's called, the new Theater is not here yet! Relax!!!!!" I said, "Oh, okay..well, make sure you play it a lot when you do get it!" I thought that this hype is the kind we need to generate. I know that my friends and I, as well as other apparent jammers in the area have only started requesting DT in this small area, but it can be done all over the place. I suppose if all the stations are country like someone said, it would be difficult, but most of us here have a rock station or two that we can call occasionally. I'm glad that the requests are getting through...I'm interested to see where this goes... Hmm... who has >what to gain here? Speaking from the point of view of a consumer, I saw the initial post and said "$75? That's too much to pay for those". That's just me personally. Perhaps there is someone out there who places that much value on those. More power to them, and to the seller that finds them. Basically, once one of these CD's is out there, it becomes a commodity, and like it or not, the market rules. Say I have a copy of Subcon that I want to sell, and I offer it for the original price of $25 (which I wouldn't, because I paid more than that). I get 30 offers for it. You would sell it for the asking price to the first person that replied. That's cool. Me - yeah, I might try to make a buck off of it. If somebody wants to pay X dollars, that's their right. I'm not putting a gun to anyone's head and making them pay more. Your position on the matter wouldn't keep me up nights if I made a profit, and if my position bothers you intensely, well... _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: email_address_removed WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ Why do they call it a TV set when you only get one? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Aug 1997 19:27:41 -0700 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: And Shirley goes long... Message-ID: Hi everyone, I was just going through the What's New page at the DT site. I stumbled across some interesting things. Well, I noticed that the total time of the tracks we won't see for awhile are enough with Met. Part2, to make a decent DT sized EP. :) Speak To Me 6:15, The Way It Used To Be 8:00, and Cover My Eyes 3:20 are a total of 17:35(so give or take one minute for the real versions). Add that with 25 minutes(about the time for Met Part2) and you get 42:35. That seems like too short of an album really. ;) Anyway, I was doing the adding and subtracting stuff anyway I went to the actual stuff, too. NM, PS, BMS(if you count HsK), JLMB and TOT are actually longer than the demos(unless I made a really big mistake). So, Shirley didn't really cut anything much(so anyone who says he sucks please email me). 5 out of 10 *are* longer(I'm counting BMS w/HsK), and stuff that was cut is only shorter by at most a minute and 35 second(LitS). Anyway, I'm still excited to finally be able to get this album. Hey, Partha where's that review!?! :) John "Kevin Shirley sucks" McCabe email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Aug 1997 20:23:48 -0400 From: Anthony LaSorsa To: email_address_removed Subject: Help please.... It's a Actually, only one "cut" of WDATU (Status Seeker) was already on another boot. The rest had not (at that time) been commonly available. It's true that, since then, the Milan and Hamburg shows have come out on bootleg CD, and I'm not condemning that because they released a boot that had maybe 13 out of 15 tracks as unique to itself. And even though the copying of SS to WDATU seemed right at the time, I now think I was completely wrong to do it, and if I were doing it over, I would do it differently. So your point is valid, it just isn't exactly applicable to WDATU. Take for example another boot called InstruMental III. Now the first two boots of the InstruMental series were definite keepers and by and large contained new/unique material. Those few duplicates that existed (Mission Impossible, etc) weren't just blatant rips. But then they release InstruMental III, which is just the Majesty: Gates of Babylon boot with four extra tracks. You say below that: > AND you said it's cool to recopy and resell bootlegs. Typically, > to make them sell better, people are going to add a track or two, or > change the price. Since this is a skin of the teeth business, as I'm lead > to understand, price drops (except from your camp) are rare. Thanks for the nod to my price cut. :) Continuing my above point... that boot company would be better served by taking those four or five bonus tracks, and combining them with another five or six good tracks and putting out a unique boot. That way, they win (they still sell CDs), the buyer wins (more material) and the band... well, they still lose, but we can't really solve that in this frame of reference. > Then why is it okay for you to mix sources on a cd? Doesn't WDATU > have some stuff off of other releases? This plan assumes that everyone Only Status Seeker... _at that time_. The Milan '93 and Hamburg '93 boots that have subsequently come out have some other material on them from those shows. The remaining five tracks on WDATU (Light Fuse, Set the Sun, MI/Afterlife, and TLF/BB, still don't exist on any other boot CD. I think (but am not positive) that I source all these on the WDATU entry on my page's CD catalog. > who makes bootlegs is aware of your stuff, and it's like assuming you > should have some rights over the material on your bootlegs. OK, you're completely right here. Technically people can do whatever they want with them because I have no more right to them than anyone else. I just hope the buying public votes with their wallets, because it's shameful to duplicate other boots under a new name and sell them. They're getting very wise to this in Tori Amos collecting circles, and are actively getting the word out about companies like Live Storm that are the worst offenders. > There comes a point at which the buyer should have to exercise > some brain cells. YOU ARE GOING TO GET FUCKED if you go online and try to I agree here as well. Of course, in the collectibles market, it's the dealers' lifeblood to deal in misinformation. Ask any Star Wars collector. :) It just makes it more frustrating for the vendors that are trying to do something right, or at least, in good taste. > you can say that once you use Surrounded from one show, no one else > should. Well, what I _can_ do is educate the buyer to make sure they are able to avoid getting the shaft. It's the least I can do to atone for the duplication I had done, minimal or otherwise. This is a service which I, and This brings up an interesting point. I _do_ believe that it's a good idea to trade for tapes of stuff, if you have time. A great deal of the boots out there aren't of high enough fidelity or of great enough significance to warrant a CD pressing. Well, I don't want to make it sound as though I'm on the payroll or anything... :).... but they've been very good about making sure I don't overstep my bounds. And that's what's made it possible to keep it up. My current one-DT-CD-set-per-year schedule means that after Mosaic comes out, you won't see the next one til around Sept. 98. This gives DT's tour time to make good money, this gives time for the other boot makers to put out their usual loads of shit mixed with a few gems, and so forth. > in the mail. He's a fair man. They didn't rip me off, I use "ripped" because it's the common term in bootleg circles for copying one boot to make another. If anyone got "rip-off", it was the customer who unwittingly bought the copy release and lost their $30. "Ripped" is used when one is making digital reads from boot CDs or DATs, esp. when referencing the re-release of same.
