Well, I can kinda sympathise with this guy, because I also live in a dump... (not Israel though; new zealand... but part of the reason it's a dump is probably because I moved here recently). Good music is hard to find here, and expensive compared to lesser types of music. Some people answered his post with information on Marillion, but what about King's X? Where's Angra from, BTW? I've heard _about_ them, but I haven't _heard_ them... Also, would anybody mind making a list of "top 5" or 10 or something Queensr˙che albums? I'm gonna move to a big city in a week, and I'm betting my musical "options" (as in finding what I like to hear) will actually decrease).....and how i expected a Killing is my biz type thrashy Deth thing going on and being pleasantly surprised by the musicality present in that album.....really cool album, even tho some of the songs sound a bit pieced together.....definitely a should pick up for a lotta folks reading this...... and then, this post could have been about a few other things as well, but then I opened the mailbox, and found a package from a guy named john, who'd e-mailed for my mailing address with no explanation a coupla days ago.....it's got a tape in it, and I figure it's tempest (MC band, who were in town a coupla days ago for a show i couldn't get to.....) and so the music starts, and it's a cool instrumental, and I'm thinking, I gotta pick up a tempest CD......vocals start, they're cool , but don't particularly attract my attention (i'm doing other stuff, so it's sorta background)....the guy switches from his low vocals, to higher range, and suddenly, some notes/vocals hit my attention......holy $#^% that's fucking circus man.......COOL, he put You Not Me on here for me.....(he posted to the jam coupla weeks ago about having the elektra sampler).....so it's Quick Rewind, and listen to this from a whole 'nother P.O.V.....and then i hear two words .............. "new millenium" and the NEXT SONG is You Not Me and it hit me.....i got me a tape dub of FII and so it begins, the litany of reviews that y'all are gonna get absolutely sick to deth of over the next two months......... and since the computer center i'm sitting in is now closing, you're gonna have to wait 'til tomorrow to see my thought, if you care to do so......... Rogerio Brito writes... > And just as a side note to Mike Bahr, he says (on his homepage) > that "Guitar Talkin'" has ripped him off getting the acoustic songs from > "Acoustic Dreams". I don't think that this is true, since the "Guitar > Talkin'" boot has things (the artists chatting) that are *not* in > "Acoustic Dreams". Actually, the original tape I had included the chat, but I was working under a 60-minute constraint for AD at the time. For the record, when I say "ripped", they may have taken it directly or they may have gotten it from another source, but the point is that Guitar Talkin' came out nearly two full years AFTER Acoustic Dreams and yet contained the same material. I'm similarly critical of all the Rush boots that are just copies of the video soundtracks, and the DT boots that copy existing DT boots. Perhaps the worst offender of all was Another Days of Dream Theater, a boot that counterfeits an official release, two other boots, and a tape that was freely released to all by Kevin Moore. One time I knew I was ripped: the Uncovered boot, also by Kobra who made Guitar Talkin', has the same Don't Look Past Me as on Subconscious, but they label it "Past (Into the Sun)" on the back, the way I had to change it for the Subcon label when I was still operating under legal restraints at the time. It's clear they weren't fans of the band and were just scammers out to make a buck. I still wish to this day that DT would have let me release the Uncovered show first. Also note that Guitar Talkin' is missing L.I.E. and the songs were re-arranged for some reason. Anyway it's my humble opinion that no bootleg should be released with material on it that exists on any other bootleg, if at all possible. I'm not perfect but I try to conform to this. I have a Queensryche release coming up (soundboard from the Rage tour!) and I'm busy digging around to make good and sure it's never been released, or is at least completely and totally unavailable (a la Vinyl boots). > > 1- How is the Mission Impossible theme related to DT? > > Did they do a cover song or something? I printed out all of the DT content in all the jams back then, and gave them to my friend. Surprise be to me when I find that he'd compiled it all and put it in a notebook, along with a bunch of old magazine articles and stuff from Metal Edge and the like. heheh. Anyway, here's some stuff about the band from an ancient Metal Edge mag that actually had a 4 page story on them (in black and white, but it kicks ass!) The title is Dream Theater Shoots "Another Day" so you can tell how damn old this is. It's even got pictures of John and Rena and Mike and Marlene. I knew I'd seen these somewhere. Anyway, they have a brief bio on each member, and what made them start playing. Pretty kewl, I never knew alot of this. John Myung: "You gotta keep your composure, be ready. You're on constant standby," noted John Myung, who played classical violin from the ages of 5-16, and picked up bass because a friend's band needed a four-stringer. John Petrucci: John originally picked up the guitar out of jealousy: "My older sister was taking organ lessons and got to stay up later than me, ans I was pissed. So I took the guitar lessons but hated it and stopped. I got back into it at 12 and learned by myself," he says, naming Steve Morse, Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Al DiMeola, Steve Vai, Allen Holdsworth, and Stevie Ray Vaughn as his favorite axemen. James LaBrie: James, from Midland, Ontario, grew up in a musical family. He sang in church, shcool and with his dad, uncle, and brother in a barbershop quartet.(Korg's note: LOL!) He got into rock at 14, and at 20, took opera lessons for four years while doing session work and commercials. Eventually, he'd like to do a solo album and a musical play like Phantom of the Opera or Tommy. "As much as I love progressive music, I'd like people to see another side of me. I love Journey, Van Halen, and Aerosmith." He also likes Alice in Chains, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, T-Ride, and Metallica." Kevin Moore: Kevin started playing piano at five and wanted to quit, but his mom wouldn't allow it. Influenced by Ray Manzarek, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, then Chick Corea, Jam Hammer and Jens Johanssen, he "was in bands since 8th grade, playing cover songs." New enough to video making to find it "still interesting," kevin nevertheless hates DT's "Pull Me Under" clip. "It was obvious how low-budget it was. 'Take The Time' was more professional." The video for "Pull Me Under," the last song written for the album, was lensed at a DT concert. (Korg's note: The infamous T-shirt video. heheh) Mike Portnoy: "On the forst day of school I'd always get asked, "Got any complaints?" (a reference to the Phillip Roth novel Portnoy's Complaint) noted Mike, who had the book at home, but never read it. the son of a disc jockey, he grew up in a "very musical" household in Long Beach, NY, listening to Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. "I was the only 10 year old kid with 500 records. I was the rocker of my elementary school. I guess it was inevitable that I become a musician." He tried piano, "didn't get off on it," and got his first drum kit for his 11th birthday. The Who and Kiss were early influences, then in high school he discovered Rush, "a band that had a big influence on all of us." His current collection ranges from the Beatles to Pink Floyd, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Jane's Addiction, Fishbone, Pantera, Primus, Porno for Pyros, and Ministry. Outside music, his passions are boxing and films, "the stranger the better," a la David Lynch. (He has a Twin Peaks tattoo on his right leg. heh. Ain't it funny how our happy band came about their passions reluctantly at first? Imagine if Mike had stuck with piano. hahahah. Fucking Fear! I'm feelin' sleazier than a stinky pig Wallowing in the sty. Can't tell up and down from left and right And I feel like a vampire in the light. Suddenly, and alarm blares on As I wake up and technicolor yawn. Stomach's quakin' And noises wake him up tired eyes Where there once were memories Now nothing in his head. By the toilet is the mirror At his haggard face he glances Can't remember how ho got into his bed. And rushing to the window He throws up on it and out against the wall. And starts digorging everyone and all Bud Lites he pounded. He's had a long, long night It took a while to recover Now for breakfast, he has to make the choice Lite or dark? Dark or lite? Draft or dry? Lite or ice? His bladder can't take more of this he stumbles off to take a piss On his shoes he makes a stain The suede will never be the same He staggers to the sofa Cracks a can and struggles to recall And from a slick commercial hears it call "Let Bud Lite confound you" Was driving round and round When I heard that blue-and-white pull up behind me He sent me sprawling, gun-butt to the head And from the BAC they found in me, I should be dead. I thought I'd have to pay a fine Instead, they beat me nearly deaf and blind. I thank you ociffer I crawled away without a DUI And now I'm free to drink and drive and drink Tomorrow, I'll go out again, I think. Tonight i'll still be lying here Hung over from all the Bud. heheh. By the way, I don't have a fucking Qlew[tm[ where he found it, but my bud has a nice big color pic of Derek when he still had his longass hair.
