I currently listen to: - Rush - DT - FW - SG Now, can you please tell me who are? Marillion? King's-X? (or whatever the name is) Savatage? And all of those other bands you're talking 'bout all of the time. If you're not too troubled, can someone e-mail me a sample of each bands material? BTW i've only heard SG's Carved in stone and it took me a month and a half getting it. BTW2 what's Tori Amos got to do with progressive? though she was an MTV singer or something like that.... I'm not even sure she's a SHE, but it seems like a girl's name and I know I've heard that name once before I even heard about DT... Thanx..... I'd say that if you want to buy an album, dig around through the UK import catalog and order Misplaced Childhood. It's probably the best album to start with, next being Clutching at Straws. You'll grow to love the rest quickly. :) >BTW2 what's Tori Amos got to do with progressive? Hell if I know. I just know she's a babe who can rock the Clavinova and sing like an angel who lost her wings. Pretty kewl stuff, somewhat melancholy, which is NEVER a bad thing. She's progressive in the sense that no one else really writes stuff like she does. (At least not that I've heard). On the subject of dreams briefly: Whatever compulsed me to dream that I went to a Spice Girls concert? I've never even heard one of their songs. Funny thing was, I seemed to be meeting all kinds of jammers there. hahahah. Eventually my friend got us kicked out and we drove off in my Ferrari F50. Because, according to classical music theory, that's the way it's _supposed_ to be. Modern music (i.e. rock and such) use syncopation heavily, but notation was developed before then, when 99.9999% of all 6/8 measures were the way I described. There isn't a whole variety of 6/8 measures. There's ONE 6/8 measure, and lots of ways to break the rules. >The only real purpose of declaring beats as being STRONG or weak is to >help with counting -- but the counting scheme is totally left to the >musician. Um ... no. The counting scheme is up to the composer. The notation is there to tell the person playing it how the composer wrote it. That's why the rules are there. >If there are six eighth notes in a measure, it really doesn't >matter if the musician thinks of it as two triplets or three duplets. It does, it does, it does! It completely changes the feel of the song depending on how you do it. The first note of any tuplet is naturally accented some whenever one plays it. Only a computer can play notes completely evenly. Hence dividing it into tuplets in the notation tells the player how the composer intended it. >Thus your whole STRONG and weak beat argument is really just your >personal preference, and you really should stop trying to convince >people that certain "beats" are "stronger" than others, because not only >is beat strength defined by the individual, but where the beats take >place is as well. No, it's not my preference. It's somply the way things were for several hundred years before Rock Music (tm) was created. And, I'm not trying to convince people of anything, other than what notation means in its original form, so that when they discuss music they don't look like complete idiots. Hey, if you want to look like a complete idiot when talking about music, go ahead. Dream Theater breaks these rules all over the place in Images & Words, but they know when and why they are doing it, and that makes the music more interesting. And, once again, it's not up to an individual which beats are strongest. It's like grammar. There are rules set forth. For the purposes of your art (i.e. your song) you can break them however you choose, but knowing when you do it can only help. __ /\ __ Chris Oates: email_address_removed __\/__\/__ +---- \_||_/ | This space under construction. | /__||__\ | Looking for something new to say here ... | // \ | \\ ----+ \| http://www2.ucsc.edu/people/aspect/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Aug 97 21:20:24 EDT From: "Chung Ng" To: Subject: Geroge Bellas - new Shrapnel Guy Message-ID: If there is anyone who is starving for some of the serious shredding of the 80's, check out new Shrapnel artist - George Bellas' "Turn of the Millennium". I needed to add something ... Yes, I'm getting tired of this, too. For those interested, there are lots of books on music theory out there that will tell you the same things I am .. I only took two quarters of theory, it's pretty basic stuff if you pay attention and don't go in with a chip on your shoulder of "I don't believe in this stuff" > 1-Can anyone explain me all about syncopations? > Can it be heard in any of Dream Theater's songs? As I've said in other messages, nearly all meters have a basic rhythmic pattern of strong and weak pulses to them. Syncopation is where the composer sets up the music with a different organization of strong and weak pulses. (I say the word pulse to differentiate between this concept and beats as defined in meter signatures) That's it. That't all syncopation is. DT uses it all over the place, as do many rock groups. The simplest example, and the most often heard one is to take a measure of 4/4, which normally has a quarter-note pulse pattern of: STRONG weak Strong weak (note: each pulse is also a beat in the meter) and divide it up into eighth note pulses and give it a pattern of: STRONG weak weak Strong weak weak Strong weak (note: each pulse is NOT a beat in the meter, but because of the syncopation, the pulse pattern ends up being more important) Another basic example is what is often called "jazz counting" or "blues counting" or "swing time" (etc.) Where, instead of dividing a quarter note into two equal eighth notes, the first pulse is two eighth note triplets, and the second one eighth note triplet. This gives a more "rolling" feel to the music. In notation, it is still notated as two eighth notes, but the feel is different, and there will be some indicator at the top of the music saying jazz time or swing, with a picture showing that two eighth notes equals the triplet feel. As far as I know, DT has never done a song with a swing feel. > 2-Is there any kinda homepage with (gulp) music theory? Just do an altavista (or whatever is your favorite search engine) search on music theory, and that should get you started ... I've never looked. __ /\ __ Chris Oates: email_address_removed __\/__\/__ +---- \_||_/ | This space under construction. | /__||__\ | Looking for something new to say here ... | // \ | \\ ----+ \| http://www2.ucsc.edu/people/aspect/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Aug 1997 20:37:38 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Mark Lampert) To: Subject: I've returned at last! Vai's performance, always incredible, with a lot of help from the what's-his-name bassist (can't remember now, but that guy is cool! I feel a complete ignorant here in Dream Theater. The only thing that I know related to music is to put one CD on my CD player and press the Play button... :-( I really feel bad when you people (Chris Oates, Mark Peters etc) start to talk about music. Maybe I should learn something very fast... If you can indicate some "Music for Dummies", I'd be greatly indebted (and I also think that other 'jammers would like). 2 - Some friends of mine (including my girlfriend) that don't listen to heavy metal/progressive or other styles of music that have distorted guitars have been telling me "You don't know what music is", "You only listen to noise". Well, I'd like to prove they are wrong making a compilation tape consisting of what I think are the finest acoustic songs. So far, I have not a very large list, and I'd like to know if you could give me other suggestions (maybe I can even know of other new bands). Here is the list I've made till now: 1 - Tears (Rush's version); 2 - The Silent Man; 3 - A Pleasant Shade of Gray -- Pt. X; 4 - Tears (DT's version); 5 - Wait for Sleep (the acoustic performance); 6 - My Kantele (Amorphis); 7 - Mama Said (I don't know if I'll put this); 8 - Nothing Else Matters (elevator version); 9 - Opeth's Requiem (very nice song). Well, if you can help adding some acoustic songs that you think are interesting, please, let me know. I don't know if know more acoustic songs than these. Maybe this list also exhausts the list of acoustic songs that I know of. It's just a shame because they are such an amazing band and a nice bunch of guys.
