Give me a demo any day. >Alison Listening to the samplers I've gotten in all these years I'd have to say that the minute or so the bands usually put on the samplers of few songs is a good enough time at least for me to make a picture of the band whether I like them or not. If you don't like samplers, don't get them ! And if you're interested in hearing new bands, buy demos. But of course, you have to PAY for them, that might be too much for you since you've never heard the bands music before. I'm just interested in hearing new bands and I don't mind paying that 4 dollars they usually ask for demos (in Finland anyway). And you should read the reviews of the demos, that might help you out a lot. If you know the reviewers (?) taste in music and you like the same stuff, it should be pretty easy to pick out the demos you might like. And you can always write to the band and ask what their music is about and maybe ask a sampler of one WHOLE song if possible. If that helps you to choose what you're going to buy. These are the methods I often use and they work well. But as I said, I don't mind paying 4 dollars from music I've never heard before. Surprise yourself, support new bands and get to know some cool bands that might make it someday. I know I've bought a lot of great demos and to mention a few bands that made it, that I've written to years ago there's Malevolent creation, Panic, Cynic, Amboog-a-lard, Steelheart, B-Thong, Backyard Babies, Killing Addiction, Mozart... Some of those aren't together anymore though. Too bad. It's fun to watch the bands grow and it gives so much to hear new music. Just try it ! I'm like holy shit! Then I hear other posts from jammers about receiving dead bodies. A couple days after I received the body, I receive another package from Mike and lo and behold it was a CD. I'm like "what the fuck?" First he sends me a body and then he just sends me a CD like nothing ever happened. The same day I get the CD, I get a a voice mail from Mike which says, "hahaha...you never know what you're gonna get from Mike bahr. It could be a CD, or it COULD be a dead body. Ha ha ha." To me, it seems like an >excuse to have a lower recording budget (not intended as flame bait). Think of recording digitally like a movie. Everyone knows that when you watch a movie, it's not fluid motion that you're seeing, but rather a series of frames strung together fast enough to fool your eyes into *thinking* it's motion. Digital recording is just like that, opnly rather than the 60 (?) frames per second that movies usde, digital audio is sampled over 44,000 times per second. Each sample is then "approximated", so that it can be represented in the digital language of 1's and 0's. The reason some people prefer analog recording, is because they believe this "approximation" dilutes (or takes something away from) the music. Of course, when you record analog, you run into more media problems (read the liner notes to Boston's "Third Stage" for a crash course. :)). You can play a .WAV file a million times, and it's always going to sound exactly the same, but play a tape of the same thing a million times (or however many you can before the tape breaks), and you *will* hear differences creep in. ----- _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: email_address_removed WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ Why do they call it a TV set when you only get one? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 20:38:37 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Ernesto Schnack) To: Subject: weird dreams, analog/digital Message-ID: So i had very starnge dream last night. Could a techie on this list please explain this, possibly in layman Well. from my experience, the biggest difference is always in the actual recording process. When you mix and/or master using digital or analog doesn't make that drastic of a change (except that analog loses quality with every copy). But the basic idea is that analog gives a warmer, more bassy sound. And when you record above the peak level, the effect is a lot more pleasant in analog (tape saturation). Look at it this way; after the peak level, in analog, that wave fades away gradually, while in digital is simplycut off. So digital doesn't capture certain high frequencies, or better said, the interaction of high frequencies. as well as analog. Compare a CD that was recorded in DDD to one in ADD, and I think you'll notice a diiference. Pay close attention to cymbals. I really can't stand how cymbals sound when recorded digitally. They have a very harsh high end. Anyways, that's what I've been told from a sound engineer. Maybe I'm wrong, but it makes sense to me. Ernie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Aug 1997 23:16:05 -0400 From: Jeff DiBartolomeo To: email_address_removed Subject: The Old Argument: Digital vs. Analog Message-ID: Richard Karsmakers asked: > Someone mentioned that Digital recording is not favoured >by some artists... Could a techie on this list please >explain this, possibly in layman terms? In the end, both >analog and digital recordings end up on a digital >medium, so what's the 'advantage' of recording analog? To >me, it seems like an excuse to have a lower recording >budget (not intended as flame bait). Well, Rich, the argument that digital recording isn't as good as analog recording is because it does indeed lose some of the ambiance that an analog recording has. The reason why is because a digital recorder takes a normal waveform and tries to create digital replica of it. The problem is that, unless you had a 1-million-bit sampling rate (which is basically impossible), the sound wave becomes a "connect-the-dots" kind of thing, where the sound wave "loses something" between the dots. It is true that digital doesn't sound as natural as analog, it's just a question of whether or not the human ear can differentiate between the two, which is the main debate that's been going on for 10-or-so years. Some people say that digital doesn't "feel" as good, which makes sense because most people's ear may not be sensitive enough to hear the difference, but subconsciously you might pick it up. You're absolutely right about the fact that the music is eventually digially mastered for CD, but I guess musicians are more concerned about the sound as they're recording it. Or maybe they're thinking "if I track analog, at least the cassette and vinyl (remember records) will sound nice." Also, many of these quotes were in the early days when CD's were still a minority and vinyl was still alive. Actually, in my experience it's _considerably_ more expensive to track in an analog studio because you need to have an engineer/assistant changing reels and splicing tape and stuff. In a digital studio, you pop in a tape (or write straight to a hard drive) and you're done. Also, a piece of analog tape that's 2" thick and running at 15 inches-per-second (IPS) is certainly more expensive than a piece of 1/8" digital tape (or a hard drive that's reused many times). Also, digital machines seem to (in my experience) rewind and autolocate MUCH faster than analog machines (and every minute spent in a pro studio equals several dollars). For example, my TASCAM DA-88's rewind about 1 minute of tape per second (I'm not sure of the actual number, but it is FAST), whereas an analog machine is much slower because it's easier to break the tape or something when it's spooling onto that big reel. So the reason to go analog is usually to record in a "vintage" studio with all analog gear and get that analog sound, not to save money. Hope this answers your questions. Folks, please feel free to correct me if I screwed any of this up... I'm a relative beginner at this digital stuff, myself. -Jeff ------------------------------------------------------- Jeff DiBartolomeo "Parallel lives. Running parallel with you.
