There's only ONE type of post that can be more relevant to this list than a Fates Warning Concert Review. That's a Dream Theater Concert Review. I'm going to post ANOTHER concert review after my NEXT show on Sunday. I'm not doing it to be a dick, I'm doing it because I've gotten letters from people who DO appreciate this content, and that's enough to keep me going. You can always scroll through it, but you signed up for a list that's based on Progressive music, and I'm posting content that's protected by the regulations of the list. If so, I agree that yes, it was sequenced on the cd... but as an incredibly picky listener, I saw and heard Mike Keneally play it live in concert with Steve Vai on the second swing of the G3 tour. It was not sequenced (Keneally made one or two mistakes) but he played it almost EXACTLY like the album. All you have to do to get that even-ness of the note volume is raise the "velocity" setting on your keyboard. While I respect his opinion regarding Fates, mostly due to the fact that opinions are subjective, and by extension unprovable, I have to question the accuracy of his insinuation: At the West Springfield, VA. show alone there were at least ten to twelve jammers. From the volume of posts concerning the other shows, I would estimate that at least 100 jammers have seen Fates on this tour. Therefore, I would argue that the post-show reviews, etc., are worthy of inclusion in this forum. As for a possible repetition of content; well, I personally would rather read 100 Fates reviews than one bootleg/Mike Bahr/imposter /Itchy-Bitchy-dissertation-on-the-state-of-the-Jam post. I suggest you sit down for a second, this is gonna be like finding out you're actually gay. >;D Back in the day, our ancestors were jumping planets, here 'n there across the galaxy. After Mars dried up 'n everybody got sick of the dust storms, they packed thier shit and hauled ass to the little blue planet closer to the sun. Well, all was good, society thrived, technology and the arts worked hand in hand instead of against eachother, and a breed of highly intelligent, appreciative beings habitated this rock. Such wonders as "Jazz," "Slush Puppies" and a race known as the "Petrucci's" thrived without regulation. One day, some chemistry student turned on the lights in his lab, started up the water for the tubs, and started working on his special formula for a jelly that wouldn't spoil. Through some strange chemical reactions and miscalculations on his part, he had created a green ooze out of straberry preserves. What he didn't realize was, he had created a regenerating ooze! Unfortunately, by the time he had returned to the next day this ooze had grown into immense proportions and had swallowed citizens whole, leaving the victims with minimal brain power to function, a lackluster appreciation for knowledge, learning, or the arts, and a tendency to wear clothes backwards, slur thier words, and drop the suspension on full sized pickup trucks to the ground. This "inferior" society thrived like nothing our ancestors had ever seen before! They hung the poor science student by his toes and whacked him plenty of times against a giant, spiked gong before throwing him into a position at a record company to sign rap artists labels. Soon, there was nothing else to listen to BUT rap! All the "superior" musicians, the violin players, the oboe players, the triangle players, couldn't make a dime, so they had to create some sort of a scheme to make money to support thier now-rare love for the arts. The pizza shop was hence created. All that was good, complex, and thought provoking was thrown into the underground of this new hybrid society. Fortunately though, through some unique generation-skipping trait of the "pure" genes we inherited from our ancestors, there are still beings on this planet who could fit easily in the ancient society. These people can be identified because of their extensive knowledge in business, music, art, and CD manufacturing, as well as thier ability to flip a mean pizza. So you see, we are (in the popular, extraterrestrial sense) aliens. Every one of us. We enjoy Dream Theater. The hybrids do not. You don't need to subtract one. Interpreted as an unsigned integer, they go from 0 - 255 (maybe that's where you got the 255 from) As a signed integer, they go from -128 to +127 (assuming standard encoding) -- sorry, my computer science major is showing again. *zip* there we go. Also, you were correct by noticing that each channel in the stereo signal is sampled separately, hence the 600+ megabytes of data for 74 minutes of audio. And for Pedro Felipe: > 1-In a piece, how can I distinguish between: > -6/8 (Compound Meter) > -6/8 (Simple Meter : 4/8 + 2/8) In standard Music theory, 6/8 is _only_ used for compound meter. The "simple meter" way should be alternating 4/8 and 2/8. If you want to "cheat", and your notation system can handle it, then just play with the baring of the eighth notes. I.e. instead of barring 3 and 3, bar 4 then 2. Does that make sense? > 2-Can't alternating 5/8 and 2/8 meters be replaced by a > single 7/8 meter or it modifies the feeling of the song? > (the same with 5/8 + 4/8 <=> 9/8) 5 and 2 making seven shouldn't alter the feeling, since there isn't a "standard" way of interpreting seven. Just bar your groups of eighth notes together to give the appropriate feeling. Just remember that barring is pretty much done only in units of 2, 3, or 4, so don't bar 5 notes together, make them a group of 2 and 3. Of couse, tuplets are the exception, where you can have 5 or more in a bar. As for 5 and 4 making 9, since 9 is a compound meter (as is any multiple of 3 except for three itself) you need to separate the measure, make it "5+4"/8 (like the "7+5"/8 instead of 12/8 in Metropolis) and (once again) bar those eighth notes together to give the right feel! Y'know? In all our meter arguments, no one seems to have ever mentioned the process of barring eighth notes together to give the right feel, and how important that is to the interpretation of music. I guess since it's not mathematical, it gets overlooked. But, really folks, it's possibly more important than the magic of "TIME SIG" in giving the feel of a song. Unfortunately, very few sequencers make it easy to bar your notes in any way other than a default, if they allow it at all. Sigh. __ /\ __ __\/__\/__ ~Chris \_||_/ http://www2.ucsc.edu/people/aspect/ /__||__\ // \ | \\ "Let nothing bleed into nothing, and did nothing at all" \| Jim Matheos, Fates Warning, "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 19:10:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Brandon Elhai To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Am I alone? I mean, I can understand with FW not having enough people come to their shows, but of the 3 times I've seen DT, there has never been a problem with "not enough people in attendance." I remember someone told me at Birch Hill '95 that the club had a 700 capacity (I know 700 is probably wrong...anybody want to state the correct number?) and later found out that the club admitted 1100 people or something to that effect. There's a lot more DT fans than there are FW fans and one reason is DT is known by more people than Fates is. I think Chris Ptacek mentioned in his fates review that only 93 people showed up. I don't see this will be a problem with Dream Theater. Brandon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 16:12:51 -0700 (MST) From: Fern Fryer! It's generally for "feel" purposes that things might be notated that way, but technically, I think still an alternating 7/8 and 5/8. But for laziness purposes and conservation of ink and paper, most people will peobably just notate it 7+5/8. :) > am I the only person who will be very glad when the current Fates Warning tour > is over?
