We both are from Minnesota, and bleed purple in a big way. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- About Divine Regale's "Ocean Mind": Good stuff. It is pretty chunky and is quite a bit different as a whole than the EP, if you got that. It does have two songs from the EP. With six members, they have a really chunky sound, with a rhythm guitar adding to the chunk of the bass and drums. The singer really sounds like Geoff Tate (Warning era) in some places, but otherwise, they have a unique sound that I'm getting into. Not as keyboard intensive as Shadow Gallery, or even DT, the keyboards are in the background an awful lot. I hope the come to Boston to play a little more often :). Released by Metal Blade. About Ivanhoe "Visions...and Reality" Better than Symbols of Time, this is their first effort. I couldn't find Polarize, so I settled for this. The biggest problem for Symbols, is the sound quality, in my eyes. The music is cool, but there are little things, like the tinny snares, and the unintelligible lyrics that bother me. In this one, the sound is a lot better, and this is much more chunky than Symbols. A lot less keyboards here than in Symbols as well. I really don't have much to say about this one really yet. I need to listen to it more. They did put lyrics in the liners of this one, though, so I can finally understand what he is singing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ObBahr: I respect both opinions, so I'm staying out of it. -jeremy NP: Was Divine Regale: Ocean Mind, now DT: Images and Words. +=====================================================================+ # grad student, Boston U. # "Lots of people go to college for seven # # Boston, MA 02134 # years." # # Astronomy # "Yeah, they're called doctors." # #<*> Jeremy Hallum <*># --Tommy Boy # #<*> email_address_removed <*># Vikings Fan since 1979 # #<*>email_address_removed <*># http://bu-ast.bu.edu/~jhallum/ # +=====================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 1997 10:34:10 -0500 (CDT) From: Brian Cox To: email_address_removed Subject: mike burstin Message-ID: hey mike burstin, nice to see you are still around. i too was around during the @bnf.com days. i believe i subscribed around issue #60 or something like that, i dont remember. it was summer of '93. right after the galactic cowboys tour i think. did my first every tape trade with mike burstin, now i have over 600 DATs (almost 400 DAT masters!) anyway, melissa said that i must have known about darkest of winters. i had no idea. i didnt even know about falling into infinity coming out until last week. i havent been keeping up with dream theater. i need to get back into it. most of the reason i havent been keeping up is all the useless posts on ytsejam which it seems i am now a part of... ;) i never meant to hurt mike, i just wish he would be honest. he keeps saying he is buying CDR's to put discs on, but every disc i have seen is a mass produced disc that can be made for about $899 for 1000 copies including jewel boxes and artwork. whenever burstin, bahr, and myself first discussed making cd's, we planned on selling them for like $6 or so to cover mailing and cd costs. i personally dont care what mike or any other bootlegger does, i dont agree with it, but there are many people that say just taping a show and trading it is immoral and i am guilty of that. believe it or not the mere act of taping a show itself *is* illegal. so i cant really do anything except stop buying the bootlegs and think that taping and trading is less evil. i really had no idea that this boot cd was out and at one time i would not have cared, but now i do. i just would have liked the opportunity to tell mike i didnt want a part of it, which i didnt have... mike bahr..if you are reading this...at least email me. i probably wont see any replies to the digest since i dont read it anymore. i have read more of them just today and yesterday than this whole year combined. i usually just delete them... :) <><><><><><><><><> Brian V. Now I know what some of you have talked about (mp3 with noise sounds, scratch). I've download these files more then 5 times from my University with Netscape for Unix and the mp3 files were exelent. Later I've tried it at home with Netscape for Dos and I've had exactly the same problem as some of you allready told. The funny thing is that the file which I've download at home is bigger than the original file I've put on the server !!!! But the file in the cache directory has the same size like the original which I've put on the server. I'm wondering because a lot of Ystejamers have the mp3 files and it works. Maybe they all have used Explorer !!! I think the problem is something with the ascii and binary transfer with Netscape (Dos). Netscape 3.0 can't identified mp3 as Application. If the source file is from ftp (like DR MOSH's page), maybe it will work. But my source file is from http. Netscape is too old for mp3. It can only identify mp2. If you use Exproler it should work. While transforming (saving) the file (ascii to binary) the Dos version of Netscape add all line feeds. I think that maybe the problem. The file in your cashe directory is just the file which has been read from Netscape. This file is not transformed and has the same size like the original file. On Unix it might be different couse as I allready said it worked !! You should try it like some one on the list allready said. Download the file. But after that use the mp3 file in your cache directory (Netscape). I'm very sorry about this but I can't do enything else. Maybe there is way. I don't know. So, for about a month, I heard and saw reviews, and the common thread thru most of it was how bad devin townsend totally screwed up natural science so, when i finally got the disc, I was expecting the most horrible idiotic vocal performance ever recorded.....maybe it was because my expectations were so low, but I really enjoyed his take on NS, he really put his own style (which i later discovered on vai's S&R) on that song, and it's probably my fave vocal performance on "working man" and a similar thing is probably happening with me listening to load right now......y'all got me expecting to hate this album so badly, this basically solid piece of music is sounding pretty cool to me.....or maybe it's just that I've gotten over the point of listening to metallica ONLY for their agression and power......hell, maybe I'm growing up? nahhhhh, couldn't be........ :) about bahr....hell, i prolly lost my objectivity on the guy about when antiquities came out.....maybe it's because i am NOT a musician (years of violin long in the past now) that I don't have the same concerns as led Brian Wherry (if you haven't got his demo, why the fuck not?) to post about Mike Bahr.....so I am led by my fan's and consumer's instinct to get anything by my favorite bands rather than by concern for their artistic rights......unfortunate, perhaps, and I'll apologize to any musician offended by this attitude.......but as a fan of the music and not necessarily the people (think on that before you flame.....how many of you actually know the band members and care about them beyond what music they make for you?), that's just who I am....... i'd stand for a few comments on this attitude....please send them privately, tho, to email_address_removed partha BUY WHERRY'S DEMO NOW! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 1997 19:15:17 +0200 From: "Magnus Lind" To: Subject: Treasure Land Message-ID: This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_01BCA754.118A50A0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi! Message-ID: > That is complete bullshit because in that example you're not stealing > the toys and selling them yourself. I'm sick of this argument. What it > comes down to is that you are making money on CDs which DT receives > nothing from. That's the bottom line. I completely agree with you, I can't deny that he's making money and DT isn't, BUT what I think a lot of us were trying to point out was that that money isn't something that would go to DT if it weren't going to Mike Bahr. It's not like he's taking anything from them, besides using their material. He's making a profit off their work, true, but he's not making it at their expense. If he made copies of official releases, someone might buy his version and not the official version, in which case money that would otherwise have gone to DT would have gone to Mike. This is what I think he was saying when he said he would never make copies of Awake. But there is no official release of say PT. By buying it, no one's diverting money from the band because this is something the band doesn't offer. As far as the whole CDR vs. printing plant thing, it turns out I was making a point that wasn't really in contention, so I kind of feel like an idiot, well more like a fucking idiot, no offense Bafu. Message-ID: As far as the boot controvesy goes, I have an opinion, but since Skadz has asked for these posts to be kept off the Jam, I won't go into it. What I would like to say is; there is a comment that I see frequently on the Jam (most recently by Melissa Bahr, but don't think I'm picking on you - lots of people do it) which goes something like this: If you don't like the post, skip over it. I would like to point out that this is all well and good, but before one skips over it, one has to download it. This takes time, especially for those of us using modems and slower connections. This time adds up, and eventually equals money. So, if you have something that applies to a limited amount of people (i.e. your customers), then send it to those people, rather than the Jam. The Jam should be for things that may be of general interest to a large number of Jammers. This category does not include product updates that apply to Mike Bahr's customers who comprise less than half of the Jam. Mike, you have recieved email from all of your customers at one time or another. You have their email addresses - there's no reason to not send your updates and info straight to them. Obviously, notifying people of a new release is a different story, because people who are not currently customers may be interested, but as far as updates on current production is concerned: Tell it to people who care. -Brian Hayden ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 1997 13:58:39 -0400 (EDT) From: Eric John Marlett To: email_address_removed Subject: So many jams Message-ID: I got 9 jams yesterday.
