Message-ID: Ok jammerz, it's time that I finally ask that stirring question that seems to have been totally missed here: Is it me or does the lead singer of Divine Regale sound like midnight from Crimson Glory? OK, maybe everyone who has a Divine Regale cd has never heard midnight, or I'm just missing that voice so much that even the most remote resemblence brings instant satisfaction to my ears. I got the first Divine Regale cd about a year ago and wondered why no one mentioned this un-canny resemblence. Then, when I finally got their second album, I felt for sure someone would pick up on this, but no mention so far. So, is it just me or is it true, we have found someone who can actually replace, to a degree, that haunting voice from the past (you can never replace the man, just come close). send some opinions this way. Thanks, Kevin. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Aug 1997 09:59:12 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Pat Sullivan) To: email_address_removed Subject: PMU/AD airplay Message-ID: >> I noticed that a lot of you jammers have always said that PMU is a >> commercial song off of I&W. Metal was not completely OUT (Headbangers Ball still existed >even!) and this was the style it was headed... either more grungy or more technical. I think the release of AD may have *hurt* the airplay chances of I&W. Look at it this way: They release PMU, and radio says "Aha. A fitting metal song. We'll throw that one into the playlist and see what happens". As we all know, the song becomes moderately popular. Then AD is released, and those same radio stations say "Shit. Just another 'radio power-ballad' pussy band. Screw 'em". Granted, we know better about the band, but that does follow the formula most of the other 80's metal bands used (One or two rocking tunes, then the obligitory lighter-waving ballad). They may have actually gotten themselves pigeonholed by releaseing the wrong songs (or releasing them in the wrong order). ----- >It would depend on the expected size of the show. Yes, I did notice. Tone-wise there is a definite resemblance which certainly isn't a bad thing. A guy I knew told me that when he went to Florida a few years ago, his friend knew Midnight who was now a drunk and painted houses for a living. Not really sure how true that is, but if it is, it's a shame. What a great voice! And look what happened to CG after he left. I saw a picture of Exotic Liquid Culture in Metal Edge...yeesh! They look worse now than when they had those metal masks! I'm still pretty new to the JAM so I wanted to start up a little questionnaire just to find out what you YTSEJAMMERS like. 1) What is your all-time favorite DT song? Album? 2) Who is your favorite drummer? Guitarist? Bassist? Vocalist? 3) Who is the best group live? My favorite DT song is, without a doubt, "Learning to Live." I can listen to this song over and over, and it still amazes me. I&W is my favorite album. My favorite musicians are Portnoy(the guy is BRILLIANT), Yngwie Malmsteen, Les Claypool, and my favorite vocalist has gotta be James Labrie. I haven't seen too many live shows in my life, but Van Halen and Megadeth were incredible! -Noel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Aug 1997 12:57:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Steve Zebrowski To: email_address_removed Subject: Time sigs Message-ID: > 2- At 100bmp, shouldn't 4/4 sound just like 4/8? I thought I could write a bit about Spock's Beard for a change. If you never heard of this group with the strange name, go and buy everything from them you can get. It's like, take the essential prog of the 70s, mix everything with mega-catchy melodies, and beam it into the 90s. Don't know if they are the most innovative or just the most retro prog band now, but they are among the best for sure. Ok, why this rave? I'm listening to an unmastered advance tape of their third album right now, and it's great. It's very dark - "Beware Of Darkness" felt lighter, somehow. Maybe that's the reason I think this album will not be as good as BOD, but it's still an absolute killer. For those who are interested, here's the tracklist: The Good Don't Last Cakewalk Mouth Of Madness June Strange World Harms Way Flow Total playing time is about an hour, as usual. I don't know the album title, well, maybe it's indeed called "3rd Album" ;-) The songs have straighter arrangements. Though there is still long and complicated, everything is quite accessible and catchy (which is good). The vocals are getting better, too, I think. The sound didn't change that much, however, but I never expected this. It's still Spock's Beard, so if you loved the first two albums, you'll love this one, too. Release date? Don't now. Look at the official webpages, maybe there's more info. Message-ID: The Fates show in CT sounds like it was as good as the shows elsewhere. We only got 30 minutes of Divine Regale, though, and 45 minutes of some DuBrow era Quiet Riot clone called Soundscape. Divine Regale rocked so much, I bought both of their CD's. ONe I bought today at HMV, and the other I got at the show. DR pretty much played their EP for their set. I could gush for paragraphs about Fates, but I think I'll just have to settle for the statement that that might have been the best show I've ever seen live. Front row, no pushing or shoving or moshing (not that there is anything wrong with that, but at a Fates show?), right in front of Matheos, and keeping an eye on Zonder. They played the same set as NJ, and they hit every, every note. Man, Alder was awesome. That's all I have to say about that. I now have four shows tied for the top spot: 1)DT at Toad's in Dec 96 2)QR at Target Center in Mpls in Apr 92 3)Rudess/Morg at Berklee July 97 4)FW at Tux Junct Aug 97. Hey to Rachel and Jayson(hope I spelled that right) who I met at the show! Thanks to Heather for the ride down there, and Skadz for the music on the way! Hope I can add Angra/Symphony X to that list come this fall. That would absolutely rock. I'm making every effort to go to that show if I can. Certainly not like Anglagard or Anekdoten, who could have walked right out of 1975. I give the SB guys credit for taking "classic" instruments and using them in a modern way. >Ok, why this rave? Some thoughts on the experience: - Met D-Man and his boyfriend. They were cool. I guess this isn't fair as he isn't here to defend himself...seriously, why does it not suprise me that these guys would like SOD? - Met Pat Daugherty of the Pat-n-Al Show. Al, be afraid! Pat could crush you like a fucking pancake, boy! - It was damn hot in Jaxx. They had the nerve to charge ONE DOLLAR for a CUP OF WATER (6oz)!! Ordinarily they don't charge for water, but, and I quote, "tonight we are." The owner claimed the air conditioning had just blown out, but I think he was full of shit. This sounds like a BBB complaint. - It sure would be nice to see Divine Regale headline, wouldn't it? - DR's singer looked and acted (but didn't sound) like he should have been in a straight-edge punk band. - If you are gay, go to Chi-Chi's in Springfield, and look for the server. Cha-cha-cha. - Fates desperately needs a second guitarist. They ruined the solo section of "Monument" with some crappy keyboard solo. Yick. They filled Frank's solos with keyboard solos, which, IMO, didn't fit. - Mark Zonder is a machine. - Joey Vera was as good as I had hoped he would be. Back-up vocals were strong, and his bass playing was dead-on. Buy his solo album, why don't you? - Ray's vocals were flawless. He was a man in his element. He really has stage presence, and has really improved, from what I can tell. - APSOG really works live, even if some of the stuff was re-created by simply playing the cd. (I was sitting directly behind the soundboard, and saw the guy push "play" and slide the "cd" volume up at various points.) - John Jens is a nice guy. You ever meet someone who is naturally happy? This is the guy. That's cool. - It's good to meet jammers and have them be cool. They all were. - Fates actually had two t-shirts for sale. Amazing. - Mike, you should apologize to poor Pat and Brandon. You wrote "east on Keene Mill Road off of 95" on their directions. He he.
