Start with "Sunsets on Empire". It's the best album from all of his solo works. IE is rather Scottish. SoE sounds very much like Porcupine Tree especially keyboards and guitars because Steve Wilson produced and played on it. You will like what you hear from SoE but it doesn't sound like "Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors" though. It's worth listening....and you will like QSound too. Just my opinion. Message-ID: Two things, I noticed that a lot of you jammers have always said that PMU is a commercial song off of I&W. I have to totally disagree. Another Day might be, but PMU is no way a radio song. Look at all the technicalparts and mood changes. Look at the time signatures! It clocks in at over 8 minutes! It is a great song! Just think if ANother Day would have been released as the 1st single off of I&W. I don't think most jammers would be here today or there might not even be the jam. If I would have heard that song I would have thought that it was ok, but not good enough to actually pursue further. Also, Is it just me, or does the end of YNM sound like "Secret Square" from Flotsam and Jetsam? When I hear that last "da-da-da-da" I want the clean part of SS to start and hear Eric AK sing "Step into the realms..". Give it a listen! I heard some > people say that one 4/4 measure = two 4/8 measure. > Also, when at the beggining of the songs appears > [insert quarter note here]=80, doeas this mean there are 80 bmp? I'll answer the second question really quickly and in a classic JM style...[nods] :) Okay, if you think about it 4/8 is four beats for 8th notes, right? Right! So, you could also say that 4/8 is equal to 2/4, right? Right! But 4/4 can't be equal to 2/4, right? Right! :) Okay, now that I've totally confused you, I'll explain something about why I hate time sig.'s. It's all based on what's easiest for you. In the example above I made 4/4 equal 2/4. Any idiot with half a brain can tell you that they don't equal, though. That's really confusing, I know. But, if you're talking about a certain riff or something, it'll make sense. I'm not the biggest time sig freak on this list, so I might be wrong. But tempo wise 4/4 *could* equal 4/8. That's if they're too different pieces of music. In the first piece the quarter note happens to be equal to the second piece's 8th note. But if I was just playing the same 4 notes over and over again, I'd call it 4/4. But, for example if the riff had 3 notes of equal length and 2 notes that were equal to just one of those 3, I'd probably call it 4/8. If you still don't get what I'm talking about find a good teacher where you live, or just start to make up little riffs of just 4 notes. Understanding how to understand what you're playing is really important, duh! :) Here's another tip I've been doing this for the past couple of weeks to work on my tapping. Try tapping any major chord and then add another note to make it sound cool(pick a note, that's in that key, though!). But you don't have to tap, you can do whatever you feel like! And have fun! I went to Dr. Mosh's FTP site to get DT's YNM, and ended up downloading all the stuff around there (at least, all the stuff I hadn't heard yet). =) Here are some comments: DT - YNM: the sample has a poor sound quality, some skipping, but you can get a nice sample. I loved it! =) It does not sound like Awake nor like IAW, but I loved it. :) Stratovarius - The Abyss of your Eyes: Man! I need to get some album of theirs urgently! That song is still rocking my nadz. =) Heavy stuff, incredible playing, nice vocals... WOW. Symphony X - Eyes of Medusa: it got some listenings for me to get into their sound, I think because of the vocals. But it's a great song, and I'm pretty interested in listening more from them. I have a .MP2 of other song, but it's pretty short... Eldritch - Chalice of Insanity & Colors: Man, do they rock or what? (Can I say "speed-prog metal"?) I'm gonna need some money for all this stuff!!! =) The only thing I haven't got yet is those "Cálice" tunes, but the one I got (not complete, I lost the connection in the middle) is pretty interesting. -- []'s /**********************************************\ |* Marcelo Vanzin *| |* email_address_removed *| |* http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/6308/ *| \**********************************************/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Aug 1997 16:18:52 +0000 From: "Chairface" To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: boots Message-ID: > Well, "Wake Up" is the same boot as "Mind Control", with a lot > less editing (for instance, LaBrie says something about the show being > broadcast that "Mind Control" doesn't have). Message-ID: A brief word on the boot 2CD set "Wake Up!": Yes, this is the same show as "Mind Control", which is a soundboard recording and sounds very good. Yes, "Wake Up!" is the unedited version which includes the John Myung birthday celebration and a prayer for the victims of the recent earthquake. Basically it's all of the audio from the Japanese Pay-Per-View video. HOWEVER, if you listen closely to the right channel of disc two of "Wake Up!" you will hear a low-level signal of what appears to me to be an Italian radio station broadcast. It is particularly noticeable when listening through headphones. This undesireable signal is NOT on the "Mind Control" boot, which to me, makes the latter more desirable to own. Really? Hmmm...I'd never really thought of Rush's music as being "technically simple" at all. I mean, not every song is over the top, but I'm a decent bassist and I'd say Rush's music is pretty damn difficult at times. I KNOW most of the songs, sure, but they don't fall as easily under the fingers as a lot of music. Anyhow, I sorta agree with the larger message above...that all the playing on the album is, in the main, window dressing. But that's the point of a cover album -- to put a little bit of your own personality into the music. I'm not EXPECTING Steve Morse to lay back and play half- and quarter-notes throughout his solo. That's not really what the guy does. I LIKED the album...I thought it was great....and I'm a diehard Rush fan. Stu does some cool syncopated stuff on "YYZ," Sebastian Bach sounds surprisingly good on "Jacob's Ladder," Mark Slaughter sounds...well, Billy Sheehan plays well on the record all the way around. And the one guy who put his stamp on the record most obviously, Deven Townshend, has been slammed for doing so. Adam D.
