I'd put Kevin Shirley in a fucking Trash Can. Why are you immediately blaming Kevin Shirley? Do you how much input he had on the album? DT must be held accountable for their music. BTW, I have not heard You Not Me. Kevin Shirley could not force DT to record a special instrumental section of Burning My Soul. The boys had to make it work. You cannot cut and paste middle secions of songs and put them on an album. If you have a problem with the new DT, tell it JP, JM, DS, JL and MP. After all, the source of >this recording was the CD. Also, while the tone is less crisp than on >the CD, I can clearly hear that Derek is not very prominent in the mix, >MP's snare is too loud, and that I don't like the way JP's guitar >sounds. Well, I don't know much about the specifics of Mpeg3, but I do know that it has some major data compression here... any pause in the vocals of YNM you can tell the compression is "scrunching up" the dead space. A lot of the MP timing is off because of this too. You can hear artifacts similar to Real Audio, this is by no means close to the CD version. Just think of how big a wave file of comparable quality would be in MB, and look at the size of an MP3 file. SOMETHING is getting lost here. Also, the cassette thing... A cassette tape isn't data compressed, just on a hissy noisy tape. All of the music is still there. I can totally hear Derek, the snare doesn't sound loud... what kind of speakers are you using? the little white ones that you got with your puter? granted, I don't have the best speakers, they are some Jensen's taken off of a modular home stereo, running through a boom box, but I could plenty hear Derek, and it didn't fight with the snares... Of course, if you think the production sucks, well, that is your opinion, but my opinion is that you should wait to hear the final uncompressed product on a decent sound system before you judge that as for my opinions? (I'm sure you ALL care to hear what a metal radio programmer has to say... yea right) Well, I do think it's pretty commercial, but I think a lot of the Prog is lost to part of the Mpeg3. Not as heavy as I like stuff, but it's still DT, and I love it! No, it didn't kick me in the ass like Awake did. This is definately gonna get some airplay on commercial radio... I won't play it on my show (well maybe for the first week)...I'll go deeper in the album. :-) But the stations that play a lot of the Load CD and AC/DC all the time (Like 94.1 WJJO here) will or damn well better play this! This is where it is supposed help to be on a major record label, and to see how good the label really is... This is their job to market this album to radio and retail. If they hire a lot of promotion companies as well as their own departments (to market this album), you will see a lot of Airplay... more than PMU, or CIAW. Okay, that's enough... if that seemed all weird, it's cuz I multitasked over about 4 hours to write! ;-) and I've been on IRC so much lately, I don't type with much good grammar anymore. my 4 bits (2 cents) ~matt email_address_removed email_address_removed Personal Home Page: http://www.inxpress.net/~mattymo WORT-FM Mosh Pit page: http://www.inxpress.net/~mattymo/moshpit ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Aug 1997 00:22:00 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Mark Lampert) To: "Ytsejam Mailing List" Subject: Trust Message-ID: Ahoy, I do not yet have the .mp3 of You not Me, but regardless of whether I like this song or not after hearing it, judge the whole album I will not, and here's why: When one of the members of the band, in this case MP, says that the album is excellent in his own words, I think I can muster up the brains to TRUST the man. You can argue "Oh, but the sound is so commercial, the new song sucks..." Shaddup. Even if it does, don't you think one of the members of the band is worthwhile putting a little trust in (and I trust very few people...)? If Trent Reznor came a' swaggerin' up and had a quote on the net saying, "Yeah, I think the Dream Theater album has a great sound." I'd be most skeptical and consider moving to Europe.... BUT.... the fact is that the man who hammers the drums of prog speaks of what HE thinks of the album... someone who APPRECIATES real talent. I trust the album not to suck. I trust the album to rule. Given that trust is a risk, but I feel I'm investing in a good bet. · • Colonel Mustard • · ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Aug 1997 22:41:17 -0700 (MST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Cc: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Basching, Holes, Tattooes Message-ID: > Geez, first James LaBrie impressions, now the Basch Bash? Guitar School: I'm going to edit it so it looks like I know what I'm talking about. LaLaonde: Put a lot of stuff about strings and picks in there. GS: What kind of picks do you use? LaLonde: I use whatever the coolest ones are. GS: So, in truth, your ultimate goal is to be cool? LaLonde: Yeah. Put a lot of stuff in there about how shred is uncool, and then we'll be totally hip. And something in there with me saying something bad about Yngwie. These days, that's how you become cool in a guitar magazine. Well spake, Ler. Trouble is, most of the readers don't even realize that what Ler was not only slagging their magazine, but saying that he believes that the very form of music deemed uncool is actually more legitimate that the one adored by the people interested enough to read the article. Well, Larry DID used to be in a death metal band. Shh! don't tell the kids! And leave Yngwie alone! S. Bach, Beethoven (my God, he's using vocals on his new symphony, he must have sold out since he went deaf) and Wagner (the inventor of heavy metal operas). Pfennig #1: there's the usual bollocks going around about radio stations. Take a good look at your radio/receiver/stereo rack. Somewhere there will be a little button or switch that has something like 'On/Off' written on it. If you don't like what you hear on the radio, use that fucking switch, put on a CD/tape/album that you do like and stop whinging. Pfennig #2: I haven't heard the little tin-pot computer version of the new Dream Theater song and I'll do my damndest not to. I've waited until now for the new album to come out and hear the new stuff (OK, I saw the band when they came to Germany) and I can wait another couple of months. Then I'll hear all of the songs the way the band AND producer intended them to be heard. You Not Me is a great song. I didn't like it at first - very disappointed in it, actually. But I gave it a few more listens and decided that sounding like a Def Leppard song is *not* a bad thing, being a fan of Da Leps and all... 2. Hearing that Desmond Child co-wrote the song mortified me. That's all I'll say about that. 3. If this does end up being a single, I hope it does well for them. I get the feeling that seeing as grunge and alternative is starting to die out (it is, isn't it? or is that just me?) that good rock and metal will become popular again. The fact that CMC are planning to release Bruce Dickinson's single 'Accident of Birth' to AOR radio can only be a good thing. Let the good times roll! 4. I'm listening to YNM at the moment - the chorus is now officially cool by my standards. And Derek is very good. 5. Just one thing... everyone seems to be saying that the 'sell-out'-ness of YNM is due to Kevin Shirley, but couldn't it be Derek's influence in the band? This is the first song I've heard from the new material, so this is probably nothing like the rest. Just thought I'd suggest that - I'm a huge Sherinian fan, btw. Just seems that Kevin was the only new element in DT that people were commenting on. 6. I saw 'Breaking the Waves' on the weekend, and was pleasantly surprised to hear Jethro Tull's 'Cross Eyed Mary' in there. Then later on I heard a bit of music that sounded very familiar. Turned out to be 'Love Lies Bleeding'. Very good movie, btw. You won't forget about it in a hurry after seeing it, even if the final shot does ruin much of the effect of the believablility of the film. 7. I'm leaving the jam pretty soon (in the next couple of days) but I'll be staying on Voices for any news. No wonder DT hates reading this mailing list. I've been on the jam for about 4 years now, but don't post that often. The reason? A lot of the feedback comes in a very negative way. Don't get me wrong. I want to hear people's opinions, but there is a way, believe it or not, to state your opinion without offending others. Now, I don't want to single anybody out, nor do I want to include everyone. There are some jammers who have very insightful and intelligent things to say. However, there are some other people who simply say things like "it sucks", "how can you like crap like that?", "they're a bunch of wimps selling out", etc, etc. How can such an outlook be taken in a constructive manner? I am by no means Mr. Proper, but the one thing I've always remembered since I was a child was that even while stating something you know others will disagree on, respect others. Instead of saying "it sucks", why not "personally, I don't like it."?? Is that so hard? We should be grateful that DT is such a wonderful bunch of guys, and that Portnoy takes the time to keep us informed as to what DT is up to, and we have access to a brand spankin' new tune!!! How many other bands do that? (BTW, that's a rhetorical question...I know there are some, but they are not the majority). As far as YNM goes, I've heard it, and at first listen, I couldn't help notice how different the vocals were in the verses. But the more I listened to it, the more I started to like it. I appreciated it for what it was.... You don't need to compare everything DT does, or someone else for that matter, to a previous release or material. Bands, just like people, GROW. They CHANGE. For better or worse, they change. Personally, I find that much more exciting than releasing a carbon copy of their previous effort. It really reflects this current period in their lives. Not how they felt 3, 4, 5 years ago. Right now. I can try to understand it, to learn from it, to absorb it. Life, as is music, is about change. Music is the essence of life. Life is the essence of music. Vince French ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2828 **************************
