I wonder if ICED EARTH will be on the soundtrack to the movie SPAWN. After all, "the dark saga" album is based on SPAWN, the comic book. This would give the band a little more exposure. Ok, there's a lot of music out there made by 'serious' composers ... you know the equivalent Beethoven or Bach, but of course doing completely new stuff. And prog is really kind of the border between popular music and 'serious' music. My point? If we want other poeple to start listening to DT and other music, we should open ourselves up and start listening to all those composers. I started getting into that, after listening to Zappa's orchestral work... there are so many ppl out there doing really new innovative things, and worst off than the prog artists mentioned in this list. For example there's this guy called Glenn Branca who writes electric guitar symphonies and what I've heard is pretty darn freaky (Just for those who want to know, Page Hamilton of Helmet used to be in his orchestra) We should try to at least give that music a chance, look for it, spread the word, so these artists can move at least a tiny step closer to the limelight. We shouldn't wait for the new renaissance, we should start it. anybody notice I'm overly optimistic today? Again, any info >would help greatly. "Days of Purgatory" is a definite "must-get" for any Iced Earth fan. Two discs, 21 tracks. All previously written material, BUT... Matt Barlow (the new vocalist) sings on all the tracks; Brent Smedley and Jimmy McDonough (newest drummer and bassist) provide their own tracks for all but four or five of the tunes; All the tracks have been remastered and reworked to sound even better. There's also a different mix of "Dante's Inferno" from the one heard on "Burnt Offerings". If you're an Iced Earth neophyte, this is a great place to start. If you see it anyplace, pick it up. It was only available in Europe for quite some time; good to hear it's finally making it over here. Sure, it's an over-the-top, off-the-cuff, full of BS generalization, but isn't that what's happening to the fan base of those few metal bands that have survived and thrived into the late 90s? (Metallica comes to mind).....I'm just thinking that it's really cool to be listening to stuff like DT and FW and know that I'm relatively alone in that taste......I wouldn't begrudge them huge success, none of us would, but.....it would't (couldn't?) be the same to hear DT on the radio constantly.....there's something incredibly exquisite about staying up all night writing a paper or something, and then at 3 AM, you're just about to give up on that paper, and then all of a sudden you're hearing Pull Me Under on the RADIO, and 5 minutes later, you're even more tired then you were 5 minutes ago because you were jumping around headbangingairdrummingandguitaringandhairwhipping etc. and because you wore yourself out to the strains of PMU on the RADIO, you fall asleep and have to turn the paper in late (True Story, good thing I had the kick-assingest TA for that class) Main point, if DT were big, and PMU came on the radio regularly, I woulda got that paper in on time.....but I wouldn't had that pleasure of going freaking wild over DT like that.......and even if it is selfish, I'd like to keep that........ partha sarathi mukhopadhyay ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 1997 14:23:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Partha Mukhopadhyay To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: I've heard MICHAEL.ANGELO. and he is for sale Message-ID: picked up Nitro's O.F.R album cheaplike.......it sucks maybe it's cuz i ain't into that shred groove, I dunno I gotta say, there were awesome solos going on, but.....they were just totally USELESS in the context of the song.....perfectly awesome pyrotechnics wasted in the middle of some icky music...... about the lyrics.....an excuse for Gillette to shriek.....I can well believe that the guy can shatter glass.....and about his picture in the booklet......do I recall correctly that someone said he was married to Lita Ford? Message-ID: From: Syrinx Newsgroups: rec.music.progressive Date: Sunday, July 27, 1997 1:22 PM Subject: Review: Finneus Gauge - more once more. every now and then, i hear a piece (or pieces) of music that totally change my perception of what music can do. a piece (or pieces) of music that can do this is worthy (i think) of recognition. as you are all aware, Finneus Gauge (featuring Chris Buzby from Echolyn) have released their debut cd entitled "more once more" on train recORDS (their own label) and here's my little review of it. everyone in finneus should be shot. why? simple, really. no set of musicians should be able to put out such a oustanding disc and be allowed to live. it's _THAT_ good. The band sounds like they've been playing together for years. The fact that they have only been together for 1 is amazing. This band is one of the tightest i have ever heard - either live or on record. The band has a sound i can't quite describe. Each member of the band seems to be doing their own thing (and seperatly you can't see it) but as a whole the mirage of colors that fg gives the listener to hear is unmistakable. Each member of FG (Chris Eike - bass; Jonn Buzby - drums; Chris Buzby - keyboards; Scott McGill - guitar; Laura Martin - vocals ) interweavs their own personality to the sound, and makes it indeed a "mess of finnesse." The big suprise to me came in the strength of Laura Martin's vocals. Her nervousness shed her voice really shines through. Her ability to literally take over a song (like "King Of The Chord Change, for example) with her >voice is a testament to how well she sings. Finneus Gauge's web site is run by Ghost at http://ghostland.com/finneus.html and Scott McGill's "The Hand Farm" site is run at http://ghostland.com/handfarm/ so go order the discs and support your fellow wingnuts. mike, ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 1997 14:36:47 -0400 (EDT) From: Partha Mukhopadhyay To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: let's go for three, why not? Lemme see, Take Rage Against the Machine, and Pantera and blend them, and calm the resultant product down a whole lot, throw in a pinch of Run DMC and Faith No More (vocal wise)....back that up with the crunch of a Maraya.....y'know, I wouldn't rally call this progressive, but it's a heavy, angry-sounding-without-going-ballistic, and in my final book a great disc, something I'm gonna be listening to for a long time.......if you can find it grab it, by all means....... partha funny thing....irony or whatever....if this band hadn't been mentioned on the jam last week, I'm not sure I woulda recognized the name and missed it altogether...... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 1997 16:32:24 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Ed Wilk III) To: email_address_removed Subject: Queensryche at Great Woods Aug.2 Message-ID: Hey all, I'll be at the Queensryche show on Aug. 2 at Great Woods, and I'd like to meet some Jammers.
