Thank you very much for the review. This was what I was looking for: a DT fan type of review. I'd really like to hear their sound before I go (obviously) importing these CDs. Do you have the CDs?? If yes, would you be interested in setting up a trade for dubs of these CDs?? I'd really interested in knowing more "brutal" metal. I'll update my (bootleg) homepage very soon and if you'd like to help a newbie, please do so. :-) Thank you very much for the information and hope to hear from you soon, Roger... -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rogerio Brito - email_address_removed.br - http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito Undergraduate Computer Science Student - "Windows? That was from Cinderella's "Long Cold Winter", though I can't remember what year it came out... I would have to between '87 and '89. The song was called "Don't know what you got ('till it's gone)". I remember seeing that video on MTV back in the Adam Curry days... they also had another video for "Last Mile", also on the album... They're actually still around, and even have a new album out that was released recently. I recall an episode from Beavis and Butthead where one of their "love ballad" songs was on. The band is in some wharehouse setting up their gear on a stage, and vocalist Tom Keifer is in some phone booth with a sad look on his face trying to call his girlfriend or something. About this time, Butthead lowers his voice and says, "I tried this company, but I just wasn't seeing any savings." I just about fell out of my chair laughing at that one. · • Colonel Mustard • · ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 00:56:36 -0400 From: email_address_removed (Ernesto Schnack) To: Subject: lekdhg;kh Message-ID: : Yeah, what's up with that? Because of the summer holidays the server has been shut down :( Because the DPRP-team (Ed, Jerry, Rene, Henri, Francois, Jeroen, Neil and Martijn) feel that we can no longer gamble on the availability of the server (we may get kicked of any day after the restart) we have decided to search for a new provider. At the moment we are still looking for a good (and not too expensive) provider (as we have a load of 1.2 Gb / month we cannot go for a normal account) and the cheapest one we have found thus far is around 60 pounds a month. Since this is a hobby for all of us, and maintaining the pages and keeping you updated on all of the relevant information is done out of love for the music, we don't want to be forced to spent buckets of cash on a provider. Therefore, the best solution would be to find a provider who would be willing to sponsor us by offering us free space/data traffic. If any of you have advise for us or are able to help us, please get in contact. I teach music at the middle school age (Yes, I am crazy) and the amount of stuff these kids don't know is amazing! I feel that I have to teach History, Geography, Math and Literature and then get to the music. They should at least have a background of knowledge by the time they hit eighth grade. One of the problems is that the arts are slowly being phased out of the elementary school in favor of the "academics" and jobs are not easy to find. Of course, finding someone knowledgeable and willing to accept a teacher's salary is another story. All we can do is keep lobbying for the arts with out local school boards and government. It is usually interesting in class when I have Queensryche, Rush or Dream Theater on the CD player. I try to find as many excuses to use this material to teach things as well as using a variety of classical music and other types. I steer away from rap though. I did >not start listening to music until the 80's. This was a very accurate summation of the state of music in 1997. The thing I find most disturbing is the way record companies today are equating radio airplay with success. They are marketing all their cash cows to the radio stations/advertisers, rather than to the listeners. Look back to the 80's and see who the successful rock acts were. Yes, you had Boston and U2 and Whitesnake and all those bands, but you also had your Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and all those bands who were selling out arenas, but (at that time) were doing it with little or no radio airplay. The fanbase alone was enough to make the bands both successful and profitable. I still remember listening in shock the first time I heard Metallica on "America's Top 40" (the edited version of "One"). At the time, I was excited that the harder-edged bands were finally going to get some mass-media exposure. Seeing what has happened since then has made me wonder if that was such a good thing after all. If you look specifically at Metallica and Megadeth today, you see bands that, for whatever reason, sound "watered-down" when compared to themselves ten years ago. It could be a natural part of the aging process, or a conscious decision on the part of the band/label, but it is undeniably happening. The reason it bothers me is because my tastes are running counter to that. I first started listening to "metal" about 10 years ago. In the last ten years (I'm 27 now), my taste in music has gotten exponentially heavier, while most of the bands I follow have mellowed. At the same time, I've become more interested in "intricate" music, while the bands I like have stripped down to simpler, more basic sounds. That's why the next DT album is so important to me. If I hear an album full of catchy, radio-friendly dreck, I'm apt to go postal. :) I mean, I've listened to Metropolis thousands of times, and I *still* can't completely follow the middle section. :) Radio airplay means nothing to record companies, becuase they don't make any money off of it directly. Sure, they'll sell more CD'd, and more concert tickets because of the exposure, but hell, Metallica was selling out arenas before radio "disocvered" them. The only difference now is that there's more people in the crowd who don't know to do the "DIE!" chant in "Creeping Death". :) So, do I want prog to be "successful"? Yes, I do, but I'd like it to be successful on it's own terms. And as someone who has seen it happen, I know that it *can* do it, if the powere-that-be will just give it the chance. Maybe that's overly optimistic, but hell - you have to have dreams... _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________________ E-mail: email_address_removed IRC: DDictator WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html NP: Drain STH - "Horror Wrestling" ______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 12:52:35 -0400 From: "Ryan P.
