Chris and Scott said that he isn't even aloud to speak today. I had tix for the Odeon show and I'm mega-bumming, but I was really glad to hear Scott announce that the whole band will be personally autographing all of the Odeon show tickets and WMMS will be sending them to all of the winners!! Queensryche a truly dedicated to their fans and it really shows. They are one of the true class acts in rock!! I hope you Blossom people enjoy the show ... What I meant was that he was trying too hard to groove and go with the feel of the music, as opposed to playing technically. The stuff that I've heard from him was utterly fantastic from a technical standpoint, but didn't have ANY feel to it whatsoever. Personally, I think he's a great musician, but I'd prefer to hear Vinny or Terry behind the kit, because I think they groove more. Please bear in mind that this is all IMHO, and I'm talking from a non-drummer standpoint. 3) Mike Bahr: you play Magic too? :) Have a good one. -Nicholas When you swim in a creek and an eel bites your cheek that's a moray!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jul 97 13:34:36 EDT From: (Chung Ng) To: Subject: re: Mr. Wizard teach us modes Message-ID: >From: email_address_removed >Subject: No soup for you, and, Mr. Wizard teach us modes > >Ionian(same as Major) (W-W-H-W-W-W-H) >Dorian (W-H-W-W-W-H-W) Great post. I learned the modes by using this method as well. I memorized them using "3-notes-per-string" patterns. You can really build up speed and practice alternate picking. The best part is once you know the patterns, you can play the modes in any position on the neck. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jul 1997 14:50:19 -0400 From: Eric Rodger To: email_address_removed Subject: Kansas kicks my ass Message-ID: >On the subject of Kansas.........I drove to Nashville to see them open for >ZZ Top (actually I left after Kansas!!!). The sound was a little off but >man are they a great band. Since the original violin player is back they >are doing some really rare stuff. My advice is to see them as a headliner >so you don't miss songs like Song for America like I did Wednesday night. I saw Kansas the other night headlining the Three Rivers Rib and Music Festival (Pittsburgh), which Kansas has been playing for about the last 5 years. I've seen Kansas about 5 or 6 times since 1991, and this time was by far the best. Like stated above, Robbie Steinhardt is back in the band on violin/vocals. Also in the band are the original members: Steve Walsh (vocals, keyboards), Phil Ehart (drums), Richard Williams (guitars). Billy Greer plays bass. Although Billy is not an original member (Dave Hope was the original bassist), he has been with Kansas at least since the POWER album, which also featured Steve Morse. The moral is, Kansas cut 2 of their non-original members, and with the return of Robbie Steinhardt, they sound like the original band again - even without Kerry Livgren. The show: Aside from being delayed until after 11pm because of rain, the show kicked my ass. Not only did Kansas sound like the band of old, due mostly to the voice combination of Walsh/Steinhardt, but their setlist also the best I've ever heard, since Two For the Show. Setlist (not in exact order): Point of Know Return Song for America Miracles Out of Nowhere Opus Insert Cheyenne Anthem Child of Innocence segment from the Pinnacle -> segment from Lamplight Symphony -> The Wall (similar to 2 For the Show except they didn't play Mysteries and Mayhem) On the Other Side Journey from MariaBronn Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel Hold On Portrait (He Knew) Dust in the Wind Carry on Wayward Son When the rain fell at 10pm, I figured the show might be cancelled. Kansas waited out the cleanup, which took til about 11pm. As soon as they started Point of Know Return, the Rain started again, but quit after about 1 minute, thankfully. I figured the set would be cut down severely, due to the late start, but to my surprise, they played about 2 hours, until 1 am. Words can't describe how into this show I was. If you're even the slightest Kansas fan, go see them this summer. I hope they start writing again, and recording. However, I'd still love to see Kerry back in the band also. Last thing: Steve's voice isn't what it was in the 70's, but this is the best he's sounded in the last 6 years. I think alot of it has to do with Robbie picking up some of the lead vocal responsiblities. Also, on big vocal parts, ala Song for America, Walsh/Steinhardt/Greer sound awesome on 3 part harmonies. They definitely have their shit together on this tour. I also noticed how much better Robbie's violin playing sounds than that young fellow that had been on the last 5 tours. Just PLEASE make sure Roads to Madness and Screaming in Digital are on there if at all possible, which I'm guessing it is since their early setlists contained these songs frequently. :) I've been out of town lately but have heard that someone is keeping a list of good DT traders. I've been at last year's MTV Tori Amos chat and *that* one just plain sucked (lots of technical difficulties). But this interview went perfectly ! 85 questions in about one hour. Really cool :-) and also a great test case for a chat session with the one and only FISH (if he's interested *and* Skadz is ok with it). Of course I asked Mike what his favourite Marillion album is, and which singer he prefers (Fish or Steve Hogarth). His answer : Mike Portnoy : Misplaced childhood Fish era And brave hogarth era Hogarth has a much better voice But fish is the more intense lyricist I love both singers and both eras Maybe that helps if you are interested in checking out Marillion. Also, if Mike loves their music it can't possibly "suck", right? :-) To the question what other progbands he likes, he answered : Not that it's a competition Marillion Yes Rush Genesis Spock's i think is the best new one Echolyn Fates Enchant is really good Anekdoten Meshuggah from norway He named them *first* too :-) Of course I've ALSO put together a nice page for the chat session on my homepage (like everyone else with a DT webpage I bet).
