I only saw one post that said that Geoff Tate had degraded in vocal ability, regardless of what I say. Now, I am certain I agree that he can't hit every note that he did on the first album in exactly the same tone of voice, but that's from age. You lose range as you get older. His loss is not very noticable, AND, even if he was only passable at best on the PL tour, if you didn't see him at the World Music Theater, you really can't comment on his performance there. I assure you, I am one of the most picky listeners out there when it comes to vocals. There are enumerous prog bands with AMAZING music that I can not listen to because of the vocals. I know when someone is straining, and I know when something is right on. At the QR show this past weekend, Geoff was right on. Maybe he'll suck when you see him next, or maybe he sucked last time you saw him... but he didn't suck here! And I'm curious to see if they'll play Walk in the Shadows at all of the shows from here on in, or if they bowed to the pressure from the Chicago Empire to play some oldies. :) Eric LaRue: I'm not ignoring your message... I'll get you detailed instructions on how to join the Fan Club(s) within the next couple days. The Speed Pick --------------------- The Diamond Shaped Pick with the nub at the end = COMPLETELY RETARDED. :) You have to learn to hold the pick in the most comfortable manner for YOU, and you have to use different parts of the pick for different sounds, and more or less of the pick for different emphasis on different notes. That nub thing may teach you to be perfect and accurate with the nub tip picks, but what do you do when all you have is a Fender Xtra Heavy? Shredders: I think anyone that plays fast can agree with this statement: Don't rely on the pick to play what you need to play. Rely on the picking motion. If you're only able to play fast with a pick that has a nub on it or has a particular tensile strength, then you're not developing your picking... you're developing a handicap. Chris W. We went to that show too. Enchant was awesome! We sat right in front of the guitar player, which turned out to be a great seat, since he was excellent and fun to watch (since I play, I always like watching other guitarists up close). The band comes across much heavier than they do on their CD's, and I'd love to have a tape/disc of them live. I would have hung out afterwards and talked to the band, but we were very tired. I hope they come back again, as they were one of the better live acts I've seen in awhile. Looking forward to Fish/Mastermind at the same club August 25. Yes, namely WOOD, a kick-ass trio that put out an album called "Against the Grain" a few years back. Violinist Mark Wood puts out some incredible sounds on his self-made violin, which at times sounds like a tortured guitar, and at others sounds a bit more like the instrument we know and love. The lyrics are primarily anti-establishment and mostly rapped by bassist Tom Kaz, and blend in well with the whole vibe this band puts across. Mark Wood also has a solo album out entitled "Voodoo Violince" (1991), which I heard when I was living in Germany but didn't buy due to my status of poor student at the time. Maybe I should've bought it, since I haven't seen it since then and have a feeling that it's only available as an import in the U.S. happy progging... p. -.-- -.-- --.. -.-- -.-- --.. -.-- -.-- --.. -.-- -.-- --.. -.-- -.-- --.. I don't like HitNF, period. It has nothing to do with wanting another Mindcrime, it has to do with the style of music they chose to write in, and the fact that they decided to follow the trend, rather than their own path. DT just wants to progress HEAVIER!! BUGA > YEAH!! :) And a lot of us don't. There seems to be a significant number of Jammers who equate "heavy" with "good" (I recall a comment somebody made a few months back to the effect of "The new stuff keeps getting heavier and heavier...you're going to LOVE it"). I don't have a problem with people who like their music really heavy - to each his own, and all that. Just keep in mind that you're speaking to a fairly diverse audience here, and a lot of us don't necessarily share your views. Before anybody flames me: I think Awake is a great album. I really do. But IMHO it's a big step down from I&W, which is the most amazing album I've ever heard. And I don't think I'm alone in wishing that DT would make another album or two in the same style. I think that it's an interesting enough style (and they're a talented enough band) to pull off a couple more without sounding stale. And I've always thought of "progressive" more as a style of music than a requirement that each album sound different than the one before it. Of course, this discussion is somewhat pointless, because DT is going to progress in whatever direction they want to go, which is the way it should be. And I know I'm going to rush out to the CD store on the day that the new album finally comes out.... Just my $.04 or so.... Kansas, which is a MP recommendation to boot. They went through different periods with different styles and ironically, some of their most complex and progressive music came during the period that they were popular (Leftoverture and Point of Know Return). Many odd time signatures and some brilliant songwriting by Kerry Livgren. And, a violin player. They probably sold 10M albums due to the popularity of Carry on Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind. The public then got blasted with such prog classics as Miracles out of Nowhere, Magnum Opus, Closet Chronicles and Hopelessly Human. These CDs should be able to be found in the Nice Price bin.
