Stu Hamm: Kings of Sleep Hey, I need to second this, especially since so many on this list have now had exposure to him thanks to G3 and the other Satriani tours. What a remarkable album, which also features Harry K. Cody (who used to be in Shotgun Messiah) who is absolutely a brilliant guitarist. Does anyone happen to know what he's doing now? Shotgun Messiah never really caught on, and then they kind of changed into a psuedo-industrial band and then they were gone. But where's Harry? >Michael Lee Firkins After I bought his first album, I swore I'd buy everything else he ever did, a promise that I've yet to keep. I've got to get with it. I think he was held up by Shrapnel as their first non-neoclassical hotshot, and he came through for them in a major way. If you could mix Chet Atkins and any wildly talented metal player, that's Firkins. And the stuff he can do without using a slide makes my skin crawl. On the whole, I used to buy Shrapnel releases (at least earlier ones) more for the supporting players than for the 'star'. I mean, the first Greg Howe album has Billy Sheehan on bass, and the first Richie Kotzen has STU!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good God, could Mike Varney line up the big guns. On the 28th day, the snail starts at 27 feet up, climbs to 30 feet up, and gets out of the hole. > 2. There are 2 jars of equal capacity. I'm not sure of this one, but it sure seems like a trick question. I'm going to say 8 feet, because the tide has to go back down sometime. If he kept running to the end of the bridge, the train would > reach him just as he left the bridge. At what speed was the train moving? This one's tricky. It takes a lot of alternate thinking. If the genius can get back to the beginning of the bridge just as the train gets there, then it stands to reason that he can also get to 6/8 of the way across at the same time (because it's the same distance.) Now, the genius could get from 3/8 across to all the way across just when the train would get across. Let's say he/she does this. Once the genius is 6/8 of the way across, the train is at the start of the bridge. So, the genius is going to cover 2/8 of the bridge in the same amount of time as the train is going to cover the whole bridge. Therefore, the train's speed is four times that of the genius, or... > b)40 mph > > 8.C, G, Q are to F, V, R as T, X, H are to This one's designed for math people. For those of you that don't know what a mathematical ring is, imagine a regular analog clock. Now imagine that instead of the numbers 1-12, it has the letters A-Z, all evenly spaced. In time, adding 1 to 12 gives you 1 again. On this clock, adding 1 to Z gives you A. There is no absolute distance from the train station to his home so there's no real definite solution other than an algebraic equation to solve for the distance as it is given. Had we known when his wife had left, we could come up with something. Maybe his wife likes to stop off for a drink or two on the way to picking him up, and maybe she fell asleep at the wheel. Mebbe he had to walk 90% of the way. Mebbe he lives three blocks from home... Mebbe she drove faster home today than any other day. Mebe aliens abducted him and he thought it was his wife coming to pick him up and they performed exotic physical experiments on him and deposited him earlier in time than they'd picked him up. Maybe his train actually did show up on time, but some quantum force pushed him back in time. Hence, she must have saved 10 minutes on each leg of the trip. Therefore, the point where she picked him up was ten minutes before the train was supposed to get there, so he walked for 50 minutes. It lives up to everything it is in the song. It's easily the coolest thing I've ever done. The best thing is that it's while you sleep. I could totally control my dream, albeit for only 5 minutes, because I woke up due to the fact that I was so excited that I was actually lucid dreaming. The technique I used? I listened to Silent Lucidity 3 times a day for a week, and I repeated before I went to sleep, "I'm lucid dreaming, I'm lucid dreaming, etc." I did that until I fell asleep, which was relatively quick. I haven't done it since, but in the short time I did it, I flew around a bit (which is common for novices). ------ I'm off to beddy-bye.
