Message-ID: Yeah, I figured my opinion wouldn't be much more popular that Michael Coghlan's. Ah well... you take your hits and you roll with them. I still believe that sticking up for what you believe in, no matter how crazy, is a lot better than everyone falling into lock-step with the masses. I respect the opinions of the pro-gay folks too (remember, I never said I had a problem with gays. In fact, since I'm married, the whole homosexuality issue is really rather irrelevant to me now) so I guess it's safe to close the book on this thread. I won't attempt to get the last word in... I accept the draw as it stands. (you realize of course that 99% of runaway threads on Usenet and the Internet listservs would never happen if people would give up their childish obsession with getting in the "last word".) Anyway... one thing that _did_ bother me in the content of the replies... several people said this discussion "has no place here". Well, other than the Falling Into Infinity news, nothing _has_ been on topic here since, oh, last December 18th or so. I mean _really_. I think the DTC thing has been even further outworn than each individual off-topic tangent. What I think I have done, and I take full fault for it, since I know others have done it too they will recognize this,is I have transferred my Ytsecon experiences back ONTO the Ytsejam. That is to say, the Jam was originally formed so we could talk about DT and like topics. When we got together for cons, we found ourselves simply being _like-minded people having fun doing all sorts of stuff_. So now I approach the Jam as a gathering of people who, at least to some great degree, think like I do, respect the values I respect, dig the stuff I dig, and so forth, and the topic has become less of an issue. I'm sorry if this has bothered people, and I guess all of us who _have_ experienced the Cons can just go back to the way we were, talking about the meaning of Learning to Live (is it about AIDS?!? gawrsh!) or about how the opening riff to The Mirror is played on drums... or about how DT doesn't get any respect in the US media... etc... or we can just keep trying to make the Jam a positive home-base for those of us who decided to use the same soundtracks for our lives. I guess it can go either way. So... Falling into Infinity eh. Hmmm. Well, here's hoping. If the band members are listening in... and I'm guessing at least one of them (probably Portnoy) has this view... ADD as MUCH balls and chunk to the new album as possible. Go wild... don't pull a Queensryche on us. (Don't get me wrong... I like HITNF... but anyone who thinks it's as complex as their past work is having delusions). - Mike Bahr - email_address_removed - http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Jul 1997 02:23:16 PST From: Mark Smeets To: email_address_removed Subject: Re-name of DT's new album Message-ID: ** Reply to note from email_address_removed 06/27/97 06:58am -0700 I just got word thru the old grapevine...the new DT name will be "Elderberries" Mark Smeets/Stranger0 Feel our bodies breathing as you try to stop believing, there's nothing you can do about your shadows, you can't fight us, you are like us and your body will betray you. As far as the whole gay argument, doesn't anyone remember the political threads from election year? Didn't we collectively learn a lesson from that? Politics, Religion, and Morality are subjects which have absolutely no place being discussed on the jam. Each and every person holds his opinion dearly on such questions, leading to inevitible conflict when such opinion/belief is, especially on the jam, ignorantly challenged. We have a common interest in music - why not leave it at that? If you want to talk politics, religion or social issues (abortion, homosexuality, death penalty) outside of the musical realm, (I think discussions about lyrical content without the inclusion of *personal* attacks is acceptable)join a list dealing with those subjects. Message-ID: Ex-DT fill-in keyboardist, Jordan Rudess, and drummer Rod Morgenstein played a clinic in Danvers Mass on Thursday. Thanks to the kindness of the great tape trader, Jon Parmet :), me and a friend were able to go see this awesome clinic of amazing talent. After hearing them on the way down to the Fix show at New Haven and then actually seeing them at New Haven, it was readily apparent to me that these guys were not only good, but they were really good. Well, after this clinic, they have made me a believer. After listening to the music, and finding out how two people can make all of those sounds, live (little or no canned music, folks, almost ALL done live), I'm thinking that these two are virtually gods in their respctive fields. Not only that, but they are personable, and sit down after their clinics and shows to BS and chat about the music. Luckily for us fans, they had advance copies of their new CD on sale, which I am listening to right now. The feel of the CD is incredible. I am really, really impressed by this CD. It sounds absolutely beautiful. When it comes out in Septmber, BUY THIS CD! You will not be disappointed. Damn. And I thought I could sell the Ytsejam Digest for millions! Okay, here goes. If you think that i'm an asshole for being heterosexual, fuck you. If you think I'm an asshole for being gay, fuck you. There are choices and there are outcomes. If any of you think that your Good Book or your relative morality qualifies you to condemn a sin that causes no harm, and fosters only love, then I assure you, you've missed the point. Whole religions miss the point. I am a Catholic. Catholicism misses the point. I am a Christian. Christianity does not miss the point (and many non Christian religions also include understanding in their doctrine). A man or woman who condemns true love in whatever form it comes, is not a Christian. I think Michael Coghlan and Mike Bahr's last posts were just about the worst drivel I've seen on this list. NO ONE ELSE'S opinion matters when it comes to homo/heterosexuality. That's all there is to it. I don't care who has a backbone and who is just throwing stones. It's not about PC or rudeness. If you are born male, you aren't wrong for having a y chromosome. If you are born a goat, you can't be slain for attempting to chew my girlfriend's hair when she was a little girl. YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT to make any judgemental decisions for anyone but yourself. Once you're certain that you're god, then maybe your opinion will matter with regards to who I am, or who I care about. But probably not. And I deplore people like Coghlan who claim moral righteousness despite their pasts of complete and utter condemnation. Hypocrisy. Mike has a history of knocking anyone who does anything contrary to what his religion enshrines. Now if he's to be considered a beacon of holy infallibility, then I must be the devil. Did anyone ever doubt it though? If you make this list your alter to preach your ignorance and your indoctrination, fuck you. With a knife. Shove your twisting this topic into DT content. That's bullshit, and if it's coming out of your mouth, you're full of shit. This list is not a debate for the values of sexuality and religion. Chris W.
