The title track form the forthcoming CD, "Crawl to China." Some really interesting guitar effects at the beginning. Slow and HEAVY. This one's a tad simpler than the other two newer tracks "Perfect Night for a Hanging" and "The Hand Trembler," but it's just as heavy. I'm looking forward to this album :). Oh, by the way, I saw a release date of August for it. Oh yeah, and I'll be seeing them in concert in a week :). Dale R. The Judgment Night soundtrack, because my brother stole my copy. Absolutely Free, by Frank Zappa, because I wanted it. And finally, the disc that is the subject of this post: "The Simpsons - Songs In The Key Of Springfield." This disc is a must-have for Simpsons fans. It has 39 tracks, and only 8 are versions of the theme song. "The Amendment Song," "Senor Burns," "Boy Scoutz N The Hood," "TV Sucks!" and "It Was A Very Good Beer" are just a few of the gems on this disc. Thanks heaps, Paul ------------------------------ Date: 24 Jun 97 10:35:09 +0200 From: "Ollila Marko" To: Ytse Jam (Dream Theater Mailing List) Subject: Review:Blackmore's Night Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids... More from the neverending warehouse of Mape's reviews... :P Blackmore's Night:Shadow of the Moon Imagine it, you're sitting under an old oak on the patio of a mediaeval castle, looking out to sea through one of the crenels of the castle's outer wall. There's a magnificent galleass sailing across the dead calm bay. There's a pretty blonde with a beautiful voice singing airs beside the wall, accompanied by a minstrel playing an acoustic guitar. That singing lady is Candice Night and Ritchie Blackmore is her minstrel spouse. This is definitely the sort of music that can part you from time and space and take you into an another, ancient world. It's pure magic, this CD's atmosphere is just enchanting. I felt I could drown in Candice Night's smooth singing and Blackmore's stylistically perfect accompaniment. Ritchie Blackmore has apparently grown out of his heavy metal pants, but this is nevertheless some of the best stuff he has composed in his whole life. As pioneering a band as Deep Purple has been, I'd select this over any of the Purple records eight days a week. It's not too easy to find a CD with appeasing mediaeval music. For me this is something I have been hunting high and low for a looong time. Candice Night's voice is like honey, it's crystal clear, it resembles Maggie Reilly a lot, Night's range isn't just as high as Reilly's but other than that the resemblance is uncanny. Blackmore's guitarwork is basic and stylish, his shredding days are over (save on one totally off-the-wall eighties disco (!) song on this disc, which IMO is way off the overall mood of this cd anyway.) and his sense of style is astonishing. Now, If I only could hear them in the surroundings I imagined. Being the last gig of their Euro tour, my hopes were this time high to live something special, not only from the band, but mostly from the audience who was basically asleep in Augsburg. With the proximity of Stuttgart, the place was more or less twice as filled as Augsburg with roughly 500 people. So it was quite hot from the start. Scanner played to a warm audience, but it was really Omen who got the place hot. Just like in Augsburg. Omen guys are really cool and energetic, but IMO their music lacks originality and suffered from the muddy sound. Anyway, after a very fast line check (the sound was obviously by the end of the tour, well rehearsed), FW took the stage. I immediately noticed that Ray was dressed much better and less than a hippie. Overall the band looked tired (this was the 5th gig of a series) but were having much more fun between themselves and with the audience. The audience responded this time splendidly, the band played the same shit as in Augsburg, but the crowd encored so much the band came back on stage to salute us one more time, although they did not play anymore. The set sounded much better rehearsed, Mark again ticking like a clock although the band doesn't play to a metronome. This guy is just awesome. Someone from the jam asked who the keyboard player was. Well I dunno if he's Ed Roth or not, but he either looks very Italian or much like Jim's brother. Who knows. In fact his reproductions of Aresti's solos are ok, but his sound was too muffled and sucked. Joey Vera up to it as usual, he also added some personal touch to Monument. Jim always as inward but this time much less worried about the others being with him in the song. The crowd listened very respectuously, if not ceremoniously APSOG, then really let go on the older songs. I dunno if APSOG got good distribution there, but it seems not since the anticipation of the crowd during the song was weak. To sum up, a very good gig, a very good band and a very good crowd, just like back in 1995. Now, FW have ended their Euro tour, however, they will play in the mega Eindhoven festival alongside Megadeth, Kiss, Flotsam, Testament, Skinlab, Foo Fuckers, Quorthon, Saxon, Iced Earth etc.... "Surfing With The Alien" did a lot more for me than "Passion & >Warfare" for about the first six months. But then... I guess my problem is that I play bas, not guitar. I mean, I'm consistently more amazed by Satriani's playing than Vai's. Then again, they're both awfully good, so perhaps I'm nitpicking a bit....and I've always admired Vai's ability to go for it on a slow tune ("Call It Sleep," for example). For what it's worth, I think I like "Passion and Warfare" a little more than "Surfing with the Alien." But I like "Flying in a Blue Dream" more than either of them...I think it's Satriani's best work. >> My only gripe is: doesn't it really suck that Steve has seen fit to put >> vocals down on Fire Garden? > >I'm not sure that whatever Steve Vai "sees fit" to do with his musical >genius is not really for me to determine as "a good move" or "completely >unnecessary." An artist is entitled to make >whatever changes within his art that he "sees fit" to make, and shouldn't >have to ask anyone's permission to do so. Just as The Artist himself. (aka >PRINCE) I was actually surprised to just to find out that the guy CAN sing, but that he can sing WELL. He gave himself some moderately difficult melodies to sing and I thought he was actually pretty convincing. It's like Satriani on "Flying," though -- because he's just a good guitarist, there's a significant population out there that doesn't want to hear him put the guitar away in lieu of a vocal. And Satriani isn't exactly Geoff Tate or anything up there -- he's got a simple, straightforward method of delivery. But on "I Believe," for example, I don't think there was a better way to communicate what he was doing. Plus, if that melody HAD been carried by the guitar, the solo that he does in there would have sounded a bit strange, not as gripping. I like people who are willing to pull anything out of their arsenal, so I've got no problem with Satriani or Vai singing. Five Gratuitous CD's: ===================== 1. Dream Theater: Awake 2.
