Either to the jam or >private email. thanks. Okay. Let me clear something up. I meant that singing *the* mode from tonic up to tonic, and then back down to tonic (with a gin and tonic) is easy. Singing *in* Locrian mode is another ball of wax, with which I have little experience. The trick used to simply sing the mode (as a scale) is to first get the tonic in your head, then go up a half step and orient yourself to *that* note as if it were in the tonic of ionian mode. Then just sing the major scale but start on the 7th and go up to the 7th at the octave....and back down. This gives locrian mode, and you stay oriented by thinking you're in ionian. I hope this helps. Rick Audet Dolby Labs ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jun 1997 01:34:15 -0700 From: Rick Audet To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Rush news... on Yahoo?!?! Both of the VCRs that Melissa uses to produce the videos are hi-fi stereo SVHS decks (though we're recording to hifi VHS, so everyone can watch it without compatibility mismatch). First of all, I was disappointed to see that the RockFabrik is no more than a disco. Very nice and cosy and shit, a ceiling as low as the current state of the JAM. Nice places to sit down, 5 bars. You get the picture. My second disappointment was that there were max 200 people in the place!! I mean, FW played to 2500 people opening for DT in Zurich-Switzerland in 1995 and stole the fucking show and now they're playing to 200 pepole?? Come on, now they don't come back to Switzerland because they don't sell much, I guess but what's the fuckin issue out here dammit? They'd do easily 1000 here in Switzerland anytime, anywhere. Next Sunday, I'll be going to Ludwigsburg to see FW. Now that's only 100 kms from Augsburg and a only a week later !!! Who does this kinda fucked up planning ? Some Metalblade bullshit exec? Although Ludwigsburg should get more people, since it's the back door to Stuttgart, it's AGAIN another RockfuckinFabrik. No another disco again, no!!!!! Get outta my face!!! I've never seen such crappy tour planning in my life !! FW does deserve much better than playing in front of 200 people. Well....back to the Augsburg gig. Scanner started off the show. Well, couldn't recognize any of the guys from the Terminal Earth period plus they've got a synth. Sounded ok, but to give you an idea, after 2 songs, I quit to go and watch the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix on the large screen at the entrance. Then came back to see Omen. Hey hey hey, these guys tour ? Old music, outdated attittude, but nonetheless very sympathetic, so I to my surprise, stayed till the end. Well, the Grand Prix had ended, also ;-) After a long wait, FW took the stage, a bit in the manner of a local band. No fancy bullshit, dresses or attitudes. Just the music. And what music, WOWW!!! They played all APSOG, allowing for slightly longer pauses between parts for public participation. And the public didn't participate much in fact. Come on man, you're in Germany and can't even fuckin sing the "Zugabe" part? Go fuckin die!! Then they encored, played Life in Still Water and 11th Hour, encored, then We Only Say Goodbye and Monument, which in my opinion, is the most representative work from FW to date. As I said, the audience was very cold, not a cent receptive, no singing on 11th Hour, at least not half what Zurich gave them 2 years ago. The sound, well, what can you get from a disco, huh ?? The band: Ray smokes like a chimney but sang as usual very well, he in fact always gives the impression he doesn't care for whta he's singing. Jim: I liked the photos of his wife, daugther and of his two dogs stuck to his rack, plus the little desk name plate set on top of it, HAHHA !! Joey Vera, that I knew from Armored Saint era, is very much up to it and plyed the fretless very precisely in the tones. The keyboard was sorta ok, couldn't hear him much, but it's a bad idea that he merely tries to copy Frank Aresti's solos. The most awesome in the band is Mark Zonder, King of drums, the pride of GMS. There are some real weird fucked up prog parts in APSOG and that led to some 2-3 times where the band didn't really know where they were nor going, but Mark ticks like a metronome allright. All in all, I didn't really regret doing 400+ miles to go see the gig, but I'd've known it was in such a small place, I wouldn't've made the trip. Anyway, looking forward to Ludwisgburg this Sunday. Under what >principle do they remove vocals? Frequencies? Or a certain way in which it >was recorded? I'm just curious since it only work on certain records, and >then sometimes it takes away the lead guitar or the drums as well, etc... My response based on wild guessing: I think they remove vocals based on a band-pass filter. This filter removes frequencies between x and y. The human voice ranges from say 500 Hz to 3, 4 or 5000 KHz, so the BP filter lower this freq.range by several dB. Since guitars also use this freq.range they are affected by this BP filter too. Well, you say they work on some recs. but not all. Hmmm. One solution may be: They are recorded with an eq. wich enhances freq's inside the BP range by more dB than the BP can reduce. i.e if the record have emphasized freq's in the BP range by say, 4 dB to normal records, and the BP filter reduces freq's by 10 dB, you end up with 6 dB reduction instead of 10 dB. Speaking from personal experience, I know the owner of the best metal club in our area - Jaxx, in scenic Springfield, VA :) - is willing to do more proggish shows if the ruenout for Fates Warning is good. If you have a local prog (or power or whatever) band that's pretty good, make effort to go see them. Support the US bands, and the non - US ones will want to play here.
