Okay, I can deal with that. Very few of the bands today don't change. I hate to say it but Metallica is a perfect example. Not that I will EVER relate Metallica to DT but it was used as an example. Very few bands that are around today stick with their original format. Images was a very complicated album, Awake was as well, but on a different level. <----notice the change. It was darker (not uglier) and more devoted to the heavier view, JP used a 7 string to "darken" it up. What I am saying here is that bands change, there is nothing that anyone but the band can do about it. I am SO excited to know that they are going more commercial because I want to see the band get the fame and fortune that they deserve. They are too talented to get stuck in the underground. Now the DT release date, I was at Strawberries tonight (for all of you who don't know who they are, they are a music store) and a guy was filling out the upcoming releases board. I asked him a few questions, he volunteered to show me the "classified" Strawberries list. DT is schedule for late July, early August. Metallica (for all you fans) is scheduled for Nov. Rush's Live album is scheduled for an October release. Now Megadeth I got the album and it ROCKS!! I am so glad they went back to their roots. It's nice to hear some down to basics metal/shred. It made my night. Now FNM "Album of the Year" is a rocking good album. It's got all that I wanted from FNM, less keyboard (because I don't think that band needs it) and more guitar/metal feel to the album. Very progressive. If you don't have it, get it. btw, Motley Crue is out next Tuesday. Derek has shown us time and time again that he can pull off the stuff Kev originally did for DT...as did Kev...they both totally kick ass...DT kicks ass...end of discussion. :) _*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* ^ According to the circle of fifths, and the order of sharps and flats: ^ ^ If the alphabet continued as notes progressed (Using Major Key Sigs) ^ ^ (i.e. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, etc.) eventually the key of Z Major ^ ^ would have 4 sharps. ^ ^ ^ ^ "Just Lighten up and listen to the Music" -Kevin Moore (inside joke) ^ ^ ^ ^ Eric Moegling: Manager for "Lifting Shadows Off A Ring" ^ ^ The Dream Theater Web-Ring ^ ^ email_address_removed ^ ^ ^ ^ HOMEPAGE - http://www.wezl.org/NuGgeTMaN or http://opeckie.base.org ^ ^_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_^ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 23:43:16 -0400 (EDT) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 2646 Message-ID: PLEASE STOP SENDING ME THESE!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 23:46:30 -0400 (EDT) From: NuGgeTMaN To: "Ryan P. Message-ID: So I am sitting here just doing the email thing when I think to myself "hey a new Jam, maybe since I haven't been reading too many I should take a look at whats up," and what do I find? Something is up! Well of course I have to voice my opinion on Satch and Vai. Well to be totally honest I cannot remember whom I heard first, whether it be Satch or Vai. I remember seeing "The Audiance Is Listening" on MTV and saying "cool!" But I also remember my guitar playin friend introducing me to "Surfing With The Alien" and my saying "cool!" But does which came first really matter? No it does not. I will first tell you that what of their stuff I own and listen to: Tape - Passion & Warfare - Vai CD - The Extremist - Satch CD - Time Machine - Satch Tape Copy - Sex & Religion - Vai Tape - Dreaming #11 - Satch Tape Copy - Flying In A Blue Dream - Satch I think this is everything. Now in all honesty I listen to Satch a whole lot more than Vai. It is not even funny how much play time the Live CD of Time Machine gets and how many times I have put Satch's stuff on mix tapes for friends. I just get a whole lot more emotion out of Satch's work than I do out of Vai's. Most of the time when I end up listening to Vai it is because I am looking through my tapes and I see it and say to myself "whoa, haven't listened to this in a while!" While Satch's stuff get's a whole lot more rotation than Vai's. Now as to their playing... Firstly I think they are both some of the best guitarists out there today. I think Vai has foresuredly pushed the envelope and all boundries when it comes to his music. I have never heard a guitar make the sounds it does in his hands in any other person's hands. Satch is a different animal entirely, sometimes I wonder if the sounds I am hearing are emanating from a guitar, like Vai, but most of the time I am too busy just being blown away by the sheer emotion and power of the music. I would like to make one last comment though about teacher/student relationships. I do not think that comparing the teacher's and the student's abilities and such is the most intelligent things to do. I see the relationship of the teacher and the student like this - the teacher gives the student some or all of what he knows and then the student does what he can with it, like a master taking on an apprentice. The master teaches, the student learns, then he becomes a journeyman practicing and refining his studies until finally he is a master and the proccess begins again. I don't know how well known this fact is, but Vai was not Satch's only amazing student. There was another, a guy by the name of Kirk Hammet, maybe you have heard of this band he has been in for a while, they are called Metallica. Now, I for one think that Kirk is a virtuoso in many sorts, and especially in that of the guitar solo, but I would like to point out what this shows about Satch. He truly must be a Master if he could have produced two such amazing Journeymen. And a Master is a Master forever no matter what anyone says. -Shane PS: Anyone have any comments on "Cryptic Writings," Megadeth's new one? I had heard it was suppossed to be Rust part two, but it is not. This doesn't mean it is bad though, it just means it is going to take a few listenings to get into! I cannot believe some of you are trying to say that any of the awesome guitarists mentioned in this thread (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Randy Rhoads) are more inspirational and greater than another. One may inspire you more than another, but I doubt you represnt the whole guitar playing public. Each guitarist carved his own niche in the guitar world. There is no statistic to measure who is a better guitarist like homeruns do in baseball or goals do in hockey. After all genius is in the eye of the beholder. Briefly, here is what I think each guitarist contributed. Randy Rhoads- He fused traditional classical playing styles with modern heavy metal techniques. Joe Satriani- He combined the hummable element of pop music with fretboard wizardry. Steve Vai- He mixed the sonic bombast of Eddie Van Halen with the virtuostic flash of Yngwie Malmsteen. In case you guys have not noticed, each of these guitarists was or is an innovator in the guitar field. Each deserves his own accolades without the comparison of who is more of a genius. Vai should be recognized for his work on his albums, not the fact that Satriani was his teacher. If you guys are going to praise someone, let that person have the limelight all to himself. Actually he does a real kewl trick there. He holds the note until the feedback drowns him out, takes a 2 second break and jumps back in to drown the feedback out.
