We are mainly focused on the interesting details of what a good song should be. These qualities include: lyrics that dwell on the surreal/introspective side, powerful operatic vocals, and music that is well thought over and scrutinized so that every part will be interesting and keep the listener's attention. If you are a Progressive Metal fan you have probably noticed that a great majority of the bands in this genre seem to be sounding the same. As a band we try to separate ourselves from what you would usually expect. There has been a new thing now with Progressive metal bands trying to outdo each other. We are sick of this type of "who's better than who," attitude, and we choose to just walk our own path, writing what we feel in our hearts whether it is based around a jazz feel, a blues riff, a classical passage, or a tribal escapade. We have realized a long time ago that it is best to "serve a song" rather than simply try to impress people. And we always try to throw in things out of the ordinary, yet still staying focused on keeping the flow of the song, while continuously branching into diffeent directions. For example: on one of our newer songs, "Desire In The Balance," it starts as a neo-classical breakdown from the ending of the previous song which builds into a power metal groove, yet still retaining the harmonic minor progressions, then it slowly moves into a tribalesque movement with radiant vocals by Brett and lavish lyrics by Jay. Now it is a fact that we do get a little musically "pretentious" but that is just our way of expressing a certain idea or sentiment that the song is dealing with. We are trying to do new things with the abstraction of music. There are certain times when we allow an interlude to stand in place of lyrics; a sort of symbolic attempt to grab the listener so they can use their imagination in reference with what the song is about. As the music plays their minds will see pictures that relate to the song's thesis. Some of our influences and inspiration include (in no particular order): Crimson Glory, Queensryche, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Vinnie Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Conception, Vicious Rumors, Ray Gillan, Randy Coven, Billy Sheehan, George Lynch, Enchant, Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker, Ivanhoe, Stratovarius, Threshold, Megadeth, Classical music of all sorts, Cea Serin, Seventhsign, Edwin Dare, Lemur Voice, Nevermore, and just about anything else that we can get our hands on to extract some illumination. Even Yanni, Carcass, Elvis, and Journey have come across our creative desks at times. Ashen Dawn are: Brett Dozier ~ Lead Vocals Chad Suire ~ Drums and Percussion Keith Warman ~ Guitars and Backing Vocals Jay Lamm ~ Bass, Backing Vocals, and Keyboards (also in the Mercurial Metal outfit, Cea Serin) We are also looking for a full time Keyboardist. They are less than CD quality but still quite good. Additionally, there is a full length Chaos Theory MPEG3 song available on my site for those interested to check out...it can be found on the ALBUM INFO page within my Chaos site. Finally, the Jamlinks page has been up and running for sometime now but i think i failed to announce it.Anyway, if you have a personal hompage and would like to be added to the Jamlinks page, email me and give me the info i need (name, email, web url) and i will add you on. If you already sent me the info, please check to make sure your link works. To find all this just follow the link below and select MUSICAL PURSUITS after you enter the main area. And not just Neil has the cancer this time, either. Think bigger -- the entire band! In fact, all three of them are, in all honesty, joined, truthfully, at the waist by one, I kid you not, giant tumor. Or maybe I'm just full of it... A somewhat ridiculous question for the peanut gallery... I got in my shipment of KTS boots a few weeks ago, and most of them are double CD sets. Where would one go about getting a double box? Message-ID: For *any* Ytsejammers interested... The Galactic Cowboys (the crazy band that toured with DT in 1993) is coming out with a new album. It's called "The Horse That Bud Bought," and it's due out on June 23rd (Europe) and July 15th (States) on Metal Blade Records. I'd call 'em heavy rock with great harmonies... I got the new CD early (some perks of running a kickin' page), and it rocks!!! There are better songs on their first three, but OVERALL, I like the new one better. There's not a crap song on it, IMO. Anyway, if you want more info about GC, go to the (Cedarville) URL below. Also, I should have lyrics for the new album up on my (GeoCities) URL by Wednesday. I don't know why they declined. Maybe they demanded too much >money. > Actually, rumor has it that they may well be playing at ProgDay this year since they'll be in the states already. No confirmations on this yet. It doesn't make sense for Marillion to build their way up by playing prog festivals. Most everyone who goes to prog festivals will have already heard them, so they won't be building on their fan base. Plus, it's very expensive to fly to the US every few months for another prog festival. Part of the problem with the last tour was that the local city promoters just didn't promote them. If you're a fan who isn't on the net you probably won't even know they're playing in your town. On another note, the tour fund is one of the coolest things to come along in a long time. The fans wanted a tour and actually put their money behind their words (of course the tour CD helped, but the average contribution is twice the minimum necessary to get a CD). There aren't many bands whose fans would do that; though if it came down to it I could see Ytsejammers getting behind DT like that. :-) Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 1997 15:42:27 +0000 From: Jon Parmet To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Drain STH Message-ID: > From: wax > BTW, someone posted about a band called "Dream STH" - it's actually > Drain STH, they are an all girl band from Stockholm, Sweden and are > touring with Ozzfest. The US versions by Hollywood Rec. were much better. I borrowed a promo copy of the new FISH album some days ago. That one's a good bit better than Suits.
