A special edition bonus CD wouldn't help much. The bsides and demos should be available to all fans, so I think a regular release would be much better. Different versions cost more. Bonus cds cost more. Considering all the crap DT is/was going through with their label, this is probably not an option. Btw, all of Marillion's albums are being remastered, right now. And every single one of them will have bonus tracks and/or a bonus CD ! Bsides, demo's, rare recordings, the works ! The first one will be "Real to Reel" (mini live-album). This one will feature a US-promo, called "Brief Encounter", as it's bonus CD. It'll be released next week, here in Europe :-) Marillion left EMI, a while back, and this is probably just EMI's way of making some more money off of them... Not that I care... One of the professors I work with here at UCLA (Jim Westby) has been presenting it in his classes for close to two years now and was talking to MTV about presenting it in some fashion (copyrights would be excruciating in this instance) when they (MTV) broke it with some DJ in Boston. We (Jim and I) think the Boston guy heard about it from the Mark & Brian radio show here in LA (it's a nationally syndicated show) who, incidently, were told about it by a student in one of Jim's classes. Ontology aside, it's been very interesting to watch the phenomenon grow from a rate of 200 students each quarter to the millions who watched MTV last week, and to watch an aspect of popular culture suddenly become "cool" while sitting on the sidelines. In fact, Jim presented it to his class one last time last week after the story broke because, now that the Darkside of Oz is circulating in mainstream culture, it will (as these things inevitably do) lose its "coolness," and he wanted to make sure somebody remembered seeing it when it was still "cool." Incidental notes: There is NO substantiation to the notion that Pink Floyd tried to compose an alternate soundtrack to Oz, no matter how damn cool the sync is at times. Also, the sync had to have been discovered since the CD has been around because the phenomenon does not work with the LP of Darkside. Finally, Jim was a little leery of breaking the phenomenon himself because of its important cult status in the Pink Floyd community. The whole thing was brought to his attention by a student at Dartmouth who was fully aware that she was breaking something big to an academic, and Jim wanted to maintain a high level of respect for its status. My feeling is that, even though millions of people will now be cramming video stores for Oz videos, the basic integrity of the phenomenon will survive intact and will remain important to Floyd fans. In any event, it's an incredible thing to see, and I urge you all to check it out while it's still "cool." Glenn p.s. To the jammer wanting specific syncronizations for a friend, just put it on and watch. It's better than knowing exactly what's going to happen. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jun 1997 17:11:02 -0500 From: Jazzmin Belle Sommers To: email_address_removed Subject: pat-n-al Message-ID: jeepers, pat, after 3 1/2 years of listening to you whine one would think that you're both pat AND al, just some weirdo with a schizo urge* to compete publicly with yourself. Now that I got your attention, I wanted to inform you all of a Rush bootleg compilation tape I'm currently re-offering called "Universal Panacea". Sorry I'm crossing over to theYTSEJAM, but the Rush mailing list is sensored which means my bootleg offer could not be posted. This is the next best place I figured I could find some loyal Rush fans. Here goes... I don't know of any of you remember this same tape project I offered about a year ago, but I'm reissuing them. This is because I unfortunately had to go away to college before the 100 copies could be sold. I roughly sold 75 of them in the short time they were offered (about a month). Anyhow, what I did was create a collection of rare and underplayed music by Rush dating back to 1974 and containing at least one song from every studio album. I've included such goodies as early unreleased singles, a live cover, and pre-versions of songs before they were completed for use on the albums. The rest are songs that were only included in one or two setlists and then dropped forever. It's a true collectors item, as I am only making 100 copies and handnumbering each of them. Just to make myself clear, it is a double-cassette, not a CD! Although this may be a bummer for some of you, it allowed me to include exactly 179 minutes of material. You really get your moneys worth. The cost is $10 which will cover the two Maxell XL-II tapes, computer generated tape jackets, shipping, and packaging expenses. Obviously, my goal is not to make much money off this. It's more a hobby than anything. If you want detailed info concerning the tracks, dates, ordering info, etc, please visit my web page: http://members.aol.com/Xanadu0378/ Thank you.
