I'd rather listen to >racoons going at it under the porch. I, too, care not a fuck (flying or otherwise) about the categorization of a given musical artist. And I share your appreciation for GNR, the Allman Brothers, or Sabbath, all of which I would consider more along the lines of a straight-ahead rock (though GNR's dabbled with some extended arrangements, the Allman Brothers sometimes use jazzier arrangements, and Sabbath has, on occasion, written music of some complexity). The "whines and shrieks" part of your commentary I can understand -- part of her appeal is a unique style of delivery that certainly DOESN'T have universal appeal. And I can understand where that would be a turn off, though I tend to like her vocal style. Geddy Lee, of course, suffers from the same set of criticisms (witness the latest Pavement record), which hasn't prevented Rush from becoming my favorite band. I DO think she has a pretty good sense of melody, though, in that I can hum most of the melodies off of her latest off the top of my head, though I don't listen to the record a lot. It's not exactly Watchtower or Malevolent Creation we're talking about here. And we've not yet gone through a feedback loop here where you haven't criticized her in a sexual manner. Not a condemnation of the banality of sexual lyric content or some kind of geniune offense to the content in another sense, but an ad hominem kind of attack: "sucks a big fat cock" or "the no-talent whore." Racoons fucking is one thing, but that kind of diction in criticizing her makes me think there are some other issues going on here...that is, again, that you don't much care for sexually assertive women, at least in your art. As far as they don't give the real value to prog music, >i can't give them my respect. Yeah, punk music is really a reaction AGAINST a lot of bands that I think folks here would hold near and dear -- ELP, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Rush, Aerosmith. And, if you were putting a list together of my favorite bands, the seven I've got listen there are probably all among my 50 favorites or so (actually, if I yanked Aerosmith, they'd all my among my 20 favorite or so). But that isn't to say that there haven't been punk bands that haven't made a musical contribution -- the two I listed above, Minor Threat, Fear, X, Dag Nasty, a whole lot of others. Where my musical head is at is really where everything runs into itself. A lot of newer bands -- Primus and Faith No More stand out -- are really looking at a variety of musical forms in establishing their own musical legacy. I've been calling that form of music "post-progressive," because it really builds on the legacy of bands -- Yes, Rush, Gong -- that were "progressive," in part, because they navigated several different musical styles. Bands that include the antithesis of progresivity may not be best called "progressive," but they've certainly picked up part of that ethos. Which, after all, keeps our musical culture fresh. I'd >rather listen That's funny. Her songs certainly are a hell of a lot more catchy than Dream Theater's, so obviously she has a better sense of melody than James, right? One thing that's for certain is that she has a HELL of a lot better sense of melody than, say, Ray Alder of Fates Warning. Personally I don't like her music any more than you do. But to call her talentless or stupid is very ignorant of you. Considering a lot people on this list listen to bands like GNR, Megadeth, and other metal, where the vocals are closer to shouting, growling, or whatever, what do you have to say about THOSE bands? BTW, several people I've played DT for have told me that James "whines and shreiks" and "sounds like a chick". But I guess they just don't know shit, and the only people qualified to judge music are DT fans. Message-ID: hey there... Just wanted to say that yes, the new Flotsam & Jetsam "High" is out. It's pretty heavy. It reminds me more of "No Place for Disgrace" rather than the "Cuatro" and "Drift" (all of which I like). Overall it's very good, although I do prefer the latest two to it. I've gotten all sorts of new stuff these past two weeks but i don't have time to elaborate today. Soon though. Later. I myself was bought and sold the first time I heard "I&W" some five years ago. "Metropolis" is still THE song. But that you already know, so why state the obvious? I'm doing something as funny as a cover of a cover at the moment, namely "Perfect Strangers". Although I quite like Purple's original version, I've been trying to find a guitar sound close to that Petrucci uses on DT's cover. So far no luck. Anyone having a clue on how to get that sound, please mail me at email_address_removed.fi. As to the old debate on all-Americans on this site, I'm a native Finn... One more thing: Does anyone have knowledge of transcriptions of "The Killing Hand"? For all I know there's no notebook for the WDADU record. Feel free to write me at the above address if you can help me out or just want to discuss Dream Theater in general. Thanks. ------------------------------ That's GO Red Wings!! WE WANT PARENT!!! My overall reaction is utter disappointment. I hope I don't get jumped all over for this but High sounds like old Metallica and I hate it. I have never been a fan of Metallica and never will so this release brought nothing to me. On Drift and Cuatro and even When The Storm Comes Down, the band could be called Flotsam And Jetsam, now they just sound like an old Metallica clone. Gone is the anger-filled riffs and lyrics of Drift and Cuatro and in comes standard thrash riffs with standard thrash lyrics. Yes, there are one or two good songs like High Noon but overall this CD bites. What they did is try to relive Doomsday For The Deceiver (which was 100% better than this album) and it simply can't be done in the same way. To all people who like the old Metallica, you will no doubt love this album but for me, I guess I'll wait and see what the next release from them sounds like. And to think, I've been anticipating this album..ah, well, now its time to anticipate the new releases from Savatage (who have never- knock on wood- disappointed me) and Dream Theater.
