Key words in that last section - co-wrote. See, most singers are not musicians. Unless, of course, they've had some training (ie. piano). In that case, they'd have a better understanding of harmony and the shaping of melodies. Sure, they write lyrics, but sometimes, they'll write a vocal melody, and claim writing credits for the song. Technically, this is correct, so I'm not saying you're wrong. What I am saying is the hand they play in writing the music is minimal, at best. This may not be true in this case, but usually, it is. Yes, some people are satisfied in playing other people's music written for them. And one more thing...how many of these artists actually sing in concert?? Not too many. > So the next time you want to slam a Big Star like Mariah Carey get your FACTS straight. God, I had no idea you were so passionate about her. Like Prince before him, James has chosen to drop his name and be known simply as "The Artist Formerly Known As James". Sources close to the band say that James will use the stylized "M", featured so prominently on many of Dream Theater's album covers, as the symbol to represent his name. :-) L8rness... =========================================================== Madness reigns in the Hall of the Mountain King =========================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Jun 1997 23:54:57 PDT From: "Eric LaRue" To: email_address_removed Subject: If Conception is the new Queensr˙che... James is the _man_. I am a fan of songs first and foremost, moreso than musicians, techniques, or riffs. And when I first got into DT, James' power and talent made the _songs_ sound great to me.. and here we are, five years later, wondering when there will be a Ytsecon IV. I do have a bit of humour for y'all though... TOP 10 REASONS YOUR PT or TDOW CD ISN'T THERE YET. 10. Mike just has to keep those mafia kickbacks going. Ever wonder why nobody has busted him yet? He tried nonpayment once in late 1996, and the shit really hit the fan. 9. Melissa is on a high-aluminum diet, and we're out of bagels. 8. The Gilbert, AZ post office banned Mike from using their station because of his knack for coming in nude on really hot days "Because my clothes would just get all sweaty anyway!" 7. The postal workers have... well... gone postal. Enough said. 6. Mike's friends like nothing more than to jab spears into outgoing packets, and he has a lot of re-manufacturing to do to make up for it. 5. Mike's actually been dead since December. Packets that have arrived recently were sent before he died, and are just now getting there. The remainder of you are therefore screwed. 4. Mike likes to annoy European bootleg collectors who post to the 'Jam asking who has the fastest turnaround rate on the 'net. 3. "The anticipation has almost reached a fever pitch. I'll probably start shipping in a month or two." 2. He's too busy figuring out the obscure cryptic algorithm that determines which discs are shipped in what order when the packets go out. 1. Mike's been spending all his nights as an exotic dancer at Hunkers. Without James, it's just won't be the same. He's one of the best singers I've heard in a long time. Some singers are better live, and some are better in the studio. We're really lucky to have a guy who can do both well. Sure, James has off-nights, most vocalists do. But when he's on, you know it. All DT fans keep the faith, and God, I hope they return to Canada this tour. PLEEEEEEEEEZE!!! Alanis went flipping thru an old book of poetry, which had, in essence, what would be the words to "All I Want". (My teacher was an acquaintance of the poet whose poem it was.) Everyone sits here bitching about female singers who don't write their own music and are just stage dolls so to speak ( which by the way I also have a problem with) yet, when Gwen Stefani fronts a band that she actually has a large hand in writing the music for...someone inevitably feels the need to comment on her small breasts. THIS is the exact reason why women musicians fall prey to either hiding in the studio...or overworking the look aspect and letting their careers be run by other people's music. It's a hell of a lot of pressure. That is also the reason why female musicians who are in the public either tend to be extremely attractive...or extremely butchy. People don't give us the opportunity to be anything other then that. I personally am sick to death of having to be a Barbie doll, and won't do it ever again. I'm fairly sure at least part of that post targeted me, since I posted an incomplete list of JLB's between-song banterings with the crowd in Milan, Italy, in 1993 -- where I stated that perhaps James needed a little more work as a frontman. And that's all I said. And from that, "Buster" deduced some or all of his ten points? Wow, I am truly floored by the deductive ability at work here. To be able to fully reconstruct my opinions on Dream Theater and its members, my own musical and public-speaking abilities (or lack thereof), and my self-opinion bespeaks a truly great mind. It is to his eternal credit that "Buster" did not also reveal my religious and political beliefs or my dietary and sexual habits as well. After all, it was all right there in my post, wasn't it? I'm sorry, Buster, that I made you doubt for a moment the divinity of your beloved rock singer. I'm sorry it shook your world-view to the ground, and that you felt the need to state the case for shutting up the critics to the jam. I'm sorry you had to take time out of your busy day (spent, no doubt, painstakingly reconstructing the entire course of human evolution from the dirt in your backyard) to lay down the law to the wretched ingrates on this mailing list. I won't tell you to lighten up, Buster. I won't tell you that my post (and probably many that turn a critical eye towards the members of Dream Theater) was made as a mild attempt at humor, and at bringing some DT content into a ytsejam that's been starved for it (and likely will be until the new album is closer to completion). I won't tell you that I own all of Dream Theater's domestically (U.S.) released CD's and a couple of imports as well, and a couple of boots to boot, or the implications that might be drawn from such an investment in their music. After all, I'm a college student and can afford to wipe my ass with hundred-dollar bills. I won't tell you that I think James LaBrie is probably one of the best rock vocalists working in the industry today, or that in my personal subjective list of favorite groups, Dream Theater ranks in the top five or ten (it's too hard to rank-order exactly). I won't tell you that I read someone's (Digital Man's?) follow up to my post which said, in effect, "well, James was a bit rough at first, but he's improved since then, as the HftH and Fix shows attest" and nodded my head in agreement when I read it. I won't tell you there's a difference between idolization and respect, and that, as musicians, the members of Dream Theater have my deepest respect, though I don't worship them as avatars walking the earth. I won't tell you all these things, Buster, because I'm sure you were able to deduce them all from that post I made. I just think you erred a bit in not mentioning them in your top ten list. Perhaps err is too strong a word -- after all, I'd hate to question *your* divinity...who knows who might take me to task with a top ten list for *that*! -- G. He said he was the lead singer for a group called Enforce who once opened for DT at the now late Hammerjacks. Does anyone remember an Enforce opening for DT? I think for the Images and Words tour they played at Hammerjacks twice. I saw them the second time and can't remember who opened. I know for the Awake show I Mother Earth opened.
