Playing the note on a cranked > guitar just won't do it. I think that is the idea. You want to find the resonant mode of the glass. It should be a fairly pure tone. Probably the best way of doing this is to, as you say run a wet finger around the rim. You could also do some numerical solutions to a bunch of REALLY nasty partial differential equations. (maybe you could do it analytically, there is cylindrical symettry) Next, you'd want to to 'excite' the glass at its resonant frequency (via sound, or whatever). This is what causes it to shatter. I have NO doubt that I could do that. And I'm tone deaf. (take me a while though) It just requires a hellofa lot less setup to bring someone with a good voice. Provided there is adequate resonance in the sound source, the sound source is loud enough, and the glass is relatively weak , it will break. My roommate and I did this once when we were drunk. What i was trying to say was that you can't just tell any soprano to sing an f above high c and expect glass to break. It differs as per the glass in question. Oh, and while we're on the subject: NO ONE has a six octave vocal range. If I heard this guy sing seven f's all in different octaves, then I'll believe it, but it just won't happen. I mean, the guy is married to Lita Ford, right? That really doesn't say much for his credibility. I know about the glass breaking thing. But, what you said FIRST was something about the f above high c and then in parentheses after that you said: "yeah, the note that shatters glass" ^^^ as if it were always that specific note. I'm sorry if I misunderstood, but can you see how I could have? Nothing personal meant at all. Anyway, with Mike's comment being announced that they're considering, I just realized how we can narrow the selection a bit. Qr's holding charity softball games during various spots on their tour with radio stations (I noticed they're planning on attacking KBER from Salt Lake! Woo!) Anyway, as anyone who's smart, fun, and was an Official Amateur Softball Assoc. Scorekeeper [tm] (I bear that trademark proudly, don't dis it at $5 a game!) it takes 10 players to make up a team (9 can slide, but it's an auto-out when the missing player doesn't shows to bat) Anyway, there's 5 members in QR and 5 members in DT. What a team, eh? Any band besides DT with less then 5 members is disqualified cuz nobody wants to pick a roadie for a team member, they'll just pour the mandatory Gatorade and Jaggrmeister when appropriate. Geoff could open with the national anthem and James could beat the shit out of him cuz he's not American, and things could be way cool. Later! KorgX3 a.k.a. "Perelandra" is, due to its being based largely on the C.S. Lewis book, full of religious overtones -- but there's fantasy and sci fi elements in the tale as well. Glass Hammer's previous album, "Journey of the Dunadan," is *definitely* out to proclaim a message -- but more on that in a moment. Walter also >Overall: Take Yes, ELP, and late Tangerine Dream and put them in a blender >and you will get Glass Hammer's unique sound. Hmm, well, I'd have to disagree with you that this isn't groundbreaking music. Steve and Fred are both outstanding keyboardists, and they write *excellent* compositions. "Perelandra" is one of my favorite albums, bar none. As for Michelle Young lacking presence -- Steve and Fred have said that "Perelandra" 's vocal tracks were designed primarily for the two of them. Michelle takes a much more up-front role during GH's live shows, and has a much more prominent role on GH's previous album as well. >Sound quality: Excellent Oh yes. This is a professional-quality disc; it may have something to do with the fact that Steve and Fred run their own audio company, Sound Resources. They've been doing this for a while. :) Now for a few more remarks about Glass Hammer, since I'd like nothing more than to see lots of 'jammers getting interested in them: 1) Their previous album, "Journey of the Dunadan," is outstanding. It's a definite concept album based (loosely in some places) on J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". This one rocks harder than "Perelandra" in places. Sound effects, a narrator, a great story, and fantastic playing. Michelle Young really shines as a vocalist in this one, getting to handle lead vocals on a couple of tracks as well. "Journey" is being reprinted even as we speak and is now available again. 2) Their live shows are seriously incredible. I saw them in concert last year at Dragon*Con and was blown away. I kid you not, it was like the first time I saw Rush in concert. (I told them that and they all ate it up -- it was like, "Hey, tell Fred that! Fred, listen to this!" "Really? Hey, Walter, check this out, man! *pointing to Walter* Tell him!") The live band features guitarist David Carter (who has some serious chops), Young on lead and backing vocals, Walter Moore on mostly drums but occasionally other things, Fred doing most of the keyboards, with Steve handling bass and some keyboards, and everybody singing. Great stuff. 3) Steve and Fred have collaborated with Carter on another project, "Wyzards", which Steve has described as "early Black Sabbath crossed with Hemispheres era Rush." They played a few Wyzards tracks at the D*C show and they flat out rocked. Lots of guitar. "Wyzards" is due for release shortly. 4) Steve and Fred have still another project, TMA-2, which they call "the techno-ambient Glass Hammer." Think Tangerine Dream meets GH meets Orbital. (Orbital's a techno group, for the uninitiated). Steve and Fred call TMA-2's music C.A.F.E. music -- for Concept-Ambient-Fantasy-Electro. They'll be performing as TMA-2 at this year's Dragon*Con, so if you get a chance stop by and listen! Okay, I'm done raving now. Summary: Glass Hammer, and related projects, rulez. :) Cheers, Phil ========================================================= Phil Carter -- email_address_removed http://www.negia.net/~carter "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." -- Berthold Auerbach "Music brings peace to the restless, and comforts the sorrowful. The "message" I'm referring to is the band's purpose of the music. A lot of band's sole purpose is to share their faith through their music. As far as I gather, GH doesn't. Just because the lyrics has lots of religious overtones, doesn't necessarily mean that it is "christian." In that case, I could say echolyn is a christian band because they have lots of spritual/religious references. I think the label "christian" stuck to any style of music is silly anyways. I think it is used to reach a target audience. I'm pretty familiar with the xian subculture. Generally, they follow certain trends. Xian bands are sold in xian bookstore because they know that xians are going to buy it. This isn't so true anymore because the music industry has finally noticed the profits in this, and now you see D.C Talk, VOL being sold in the rock/pop section instead of the gospel or inspirational section. Generally, I get turned off by a lot of xian bands because of their trite and preachy lyrics. On the other hand, GH has lots of religious overtones and I love the lyrics. >Glass Hammer's previous album, "Journey of the Dunadan," is *definitely* >out to proclaim a message -- but more on that in a moment.
