Also, the reason metal sounds so depressing is it's mostly minor in key, usually Am or Em. DT varies keys alot. For example - I&W's common key: Bm. On Awake, common key(s): Bm & Em. Now, on the issue of James' highest note. James' highest note on record is an F in Innocence Faded. (I haven't quite finished transcribing ACOS, I could be wrong.) Now, that F, for guitarists, would be the 11th fret on the high E. Jim Gillette, on the other hand has also hit an F... an octave higher than James. That's the 25th fret on the high E (Some of Michael Angelo's guitars have 26 or 36 frets). Jim & Mike got together with TJ Racer and Bobby Rock to form Nitro and recorded 2 albums. The first album is pretty much a wank-fest...a duel between Mike & Jim. The second album (with a new rhythm section) was more song-based. Good luck trying to find either of these, they were deleted long ago when Nitro broke up. You run a finger around the rim of a wine glass. If it produces a note, it can be broken with your voice. You must hit that exact note, and the vocal vibrations will cause the glass to break. Not all glasses produce a note, and only the wavelength produced by a voice will be able to break it. Playing the note on a cranked guitar just won't do it. =========================================================== Madness reigns in the Hall of the Mountain King =========================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 17:16:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Pat Daugherty To: Dream Theater Mailing List Subject: new cds/radio Message-ID: I ordered Enchant's Wounded and Magellan's Test Of Wills last monday from cdconnection and the cds arrived 4 days later. Message-ID: Has anyone here heard anything from a band called Mayadome? Here's a review I found on the Dutch Progressive Rock Page: MAYADOME - Paranormal Activity (SH 10982) 10 tracks - 72 minutes Paranormal Activity is the debut album of the Swedish progressive metal band Mayadome. The band did however release a demo-CD under the name 'Mellow Poetry' some time ago. The four tracks that were on that demo can also be found on the Paranormal Activity album , but have changed considerably since their first appearance (both in length and complexity). Mayadome's sound comes very close to that of Dream Theater, but has more feeling in the sound. On the other hand the band does not come near to DT in the vocal department. While the vocalist did a good job on the demo, he seems to have a huge problem with the increased complexity of the renewed material. The instrumental team is very strong and this is shown throughout the album in the many interludes. The eight minute instrumental title track being the absolute best piece. If it had not been for the vocalist this would have been one of the top ranking titles of 1996, but even with this small setback it is still a very good album which will without doubt do very well with DT fans. Martijn: 8- Sounds like a good review... If anyone has any info on them, I'd appreciate it! Remember what you wrote D? Wow, that *was* quite a while ago. I can't believe you still remember that. My memory of it is a bit hazy, but I think it went something like this: 1) The prog fan, who likes DT because of their talent and their penchant for long intricate songs. The type of person that listens to a lot of Genesis and KC. 2) The metalhead, who likes DT because they kick ass on songs like PMU and Mirror/Lie. Drawn to the DT sound because of the effect that Hetfield (and others) had on Petrucci. 3) The combination listener - prog fan and metalhead. Can now put in a DT disc and hear everything he/she wants to get out of music at once, instead of having to load up the CD changer with Rush, ELP, Fates, and Anthrax. 4) I don't really remember if I had a fourth category or not. If anyone still has that original post laying around (Ged knows I don't), feel free to post it - I'd love to see it again. -d P.S. My Turn! Message-ID: Hey YtseDudez - There has been some replies lately to John's request for album recommendations... now it's my turn!! :-) Incidentally, I only have a few that I feel I am qualified to suggest, since there are several bands I have never heard, or only own maybe one or two of their albums. A few of the ones listed, though, I am BIG fans of... so w/o further adieu: Amorphis - There was a thread some time ago on the Jam regarding these guys. Some favored the older stuff, I favor the newer stuff. But, since this IS just my NSHO, I most definitely recommend "Elegy". (Available in America... I do not know of any bonus trax on Japanese or Euro versions...) These guys are amazing!!! The music on this album is so melodic, progressive, and cohesive, it's scary! The only downer (and a minor one, at that) is the "cookie-monster" vocals. (Whoever coined that phrase recently... you rule!) Fortunately, the "growler" splits vocal duties (about 50/50, I think) with a "clean" vocalist who has a really cool voice. This is still one of my all-time faves by anyone... get this one at all costs! After that, you may wanna try out "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" - also very good and available domestically. Crimson Glory - I just want to reiterate what someone else already stated... GET THE FIRST 2 ALBUMS!!!! You can still find "Transcendence" in America for really cheap, but as far as I know, their first one (S/T) is only available as import for around $20. Outstanding band... keep your fingers and toes crossed for a reunion. Oh, BTW, if you see "Strange and Beautiful" advertised? Forget about it... it sux hard. I was very disappointed with this one with the exception of the 2 power-ballads. Just awful. Their first 2 are absolute classics, however. Sepultura - I have always been a giant Sep fan... until their latest "Roots". As much as I really appreciated the band's desire to grow and change, I just didn't like the album at all. However... "Chaos A.D." is REQUIRED listening, IMHO. 100% killer album - heavy, but very memorable. In the running also is "Arise" and "Beneath the Remains". Both are AWESOME, but run a close second (tied) to "Chaos A.D.". Hope this helps you out, John. Hey, how 'bout Dream Theater appearing in an MTV news blurb, eh? Maybe the station is finally starting to come around... (pause whilst I roll around on the floor laughing) well, maybe not... Laterz, friendz... Here's my latest= review. Band: Glass Hammer Album: Perelandra Label: Arion Records (1995) Band musicians: Stephen DeArque- leading and backing vocals, keyboards, bass guitar, Taurus pedals, mellotron, zoomitar, rhythm programming Fred Schendel- lead and backing vocals, keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, drums and programming, mellotron Walter Moore-vocals, 12 string acoutic guitar, mo-better electric guitar Michelle Young- vocals, more vocals, and singing Milton Hamerick- steel guitars Randy Burt- saxaphone Tracy Cloud- backing vocals, speaking David Carter- 12 string acoustic Composed and arranged by- DeArque and Schendel Opening comments: This is the kind of album that could sell well in christian bookstores. I say this because this album has the same ingredients as the successful xian band Jars of Clay=97an unique, accessible sound and thoughtful lyrics. Unfortunately, they do not have the label marketing strategies to reach platinum as JoC did. I would not catagorize Glass Hammer as a "christian" band because they aren=92t out to proclaim a message, rather as DeArque explains in an Expose article, " [Prelandra] is a story, a musical fantasy, and it is meant only to be an =91audio diversion= =92 for the listener...much of the inspiration for this story comes not only from the overall theme of the books =91Perelandra=92 and =91Mere= Christianity=92 by C.S. Lewis, but also from a poem called =91Little Lost Girl=92 by the= English poet William Blake, as well as the Twin Peaks movie =91Fire Walk with Me=92= by David Lynch." I=92m not fond of C.S. Lewis as a theologian/philosopher, but= I consider him to be one of the greatest fictional writers of the century. This album captures his creativity by using a lot of his imagery in the= lyrics. Overall: Take Yes, ELP, and late Tangerine Dream and put them in a blender and you will get Glass Hammer=92s unique sound. If you are a fan of keyboards, this album will certainly please. DeArque/Schendel=92s vocals sound pleasing; Young has a strong female voice but lacks presence. Tracks 2-5, 12 are outstanding, and the rest are good but have different mood. If I were to give a rating, it would be 4 =BD stars out of 5. This isn=92t ground-breaking music, but the songs are well crafted and have replay value, so I added the extra half star. Sound quality: Excellent Further information: Glass Hammer home page http://www.glasshammer.com Songs: 1) "Now Arriving" (2:00) This track opens up with various sounds including machine guns, broken glass, footsteps, and voice samples. 2) "Time Marches On" (10:37) This track begins with a simple keyboard progression that builds up for a minute and a half. The only adjective that I can describe this is uplifting. The rest of the song is catchy and has alternating and dual lead vocals. Nice keyboard solo ending with a reoccuring theme of the first part. This one is my favorite track. 3) "Llusion" (9:08) Organ/bass/drum assault intro that shifts back to an accessible meter. The keyboard solo in the middle sounds very Keith= Emerson. 4) "The Way to Her Heart" (4:47) I initially skipped this song upon the first several listenings because it sounded like a plain acoustic song. As I listened further, I was immediately hooked on the triple layer of melodic keyboards. 5) "Felix the Cat" (2:34) An instrumental of Mendleson=92s Fourth Symphony, Italian, Fourth Movement. Done in the style of ELP=92s "Hoedown" except= more modern sounding. 6) "Now Departing" (1:05) This track is a sample of an announcer at a train station. 7) "Perelandra" (8:08) This instrumental track starts out as a slow new-age sound with piano playing, and builds up to an upbeat sound. 8) "Le Danse Final" (5:19) Low droning keyboards with sax. The vocals here are low key. Great sax outro. 9) "That Hideous Strength" (3:54) A semi-industrial song with Depeche Mode type of vocals. 10) "Enda the Lion" (0:56) A woman being chased by an evil character and letting out piercing screams. 11) "Into the Night" (4:46) A slow sad song with dim lyrics and monotonous low key vocals. 12) "Heaven" (8:37) Nice mellotron/acoustic guitar opening. The keyboard sounds here change constantly. Alternating vocals. A particular vocal passage sends chills up my spine: "The mask is stripped away/And night turns into day/A lion yet a lamb before her stands/The eyes you stare into/And looking back at you/He is revealed the Son of Man" Several reviews say that this song hearkens Yes "Awaken", but I wouldn=92t know. The song gloriously ends with a crescendo of vocals and weaving melodies. ** Walter. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 20:17:08 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Bruce Forst) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: James' Onstage Antics Message-ID: > I know myself, more than once, have sensed my audience not paying >attention or whatnot. A singer has the unenviable job of being the guy who has to stand out front and interact with the crowd.. while he is trying to perform with his instrument! I don't blame James a single bit for getting frustrated when he looks down and sees a crowd more interested in bruising each other than listening to the band. Then there's the idiots that have the nerve to yell insults between songs. Frankly James should treat these types the same way that professional comedians treat a hostile audience, ignore them and keep going on with the show for the people who are there to see it. At least with music you can just crank the volume and drown them out. bruce email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 1997 21:36:51 -0400 From: Pat Sullivan To: email_address_removed Subject: AI Message-ID: >Anyway, was just wondering if any of you had heard of Auditory Imagery, >based out of Avon, MA????
