"let me KILL you"??? It would be cool if he said that, but I think it's "let me hear you London". As for Surrounded, you bastard, I have the version of LATM with Another Day, which I already have on the Lie single, so I wish I had the Surrounded version. :) >I can't understand why a lot of people (I didn't say all) who listen to >progressive music, and other forms of heavier rock, have to dislike the >less complex musicstyles. (too bad it's the other way around too) I >consider The Smashing Pumpkins as good a band as most of the progbands I >listen to (except DT and Rush, they're incomparable), but I definitley Well, you know what, personally I think No Doubt's music is much more complicated than that of any other teenybopper band I've heard in the last few years. Their music may not be that heavy, and they may not be DT, but unlike some bands (uhm, Green Day) that have been really popular in recent years, at least No Doubt know how to play their instruments, and if you ask me, while their music isn't extremely difficult to play or anything, they're great songwriters. They're not one of these 3-chord bands, and you could take away the vocals and their music would still be alright. I will admit that Gwen has a kind of annoying voice though, but not nearly as annoying as that Smashing Pumpkins vocalist. I think there are two camps of DT fans here. The metalheads who also happen to like DT, mainly for the heavier stuff, and the people who like mostly lighter stuff but who DT appeals to because of the complexity. Chances are that people who listen to mostly heavy metal won't like no doubt. Mind you, this is just my little theory, so don't believe me if you don't want to. -fuckfuck ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 May 1997 07:08:10 -0400 From: Lars Hellsten To: email_address_removed Message-ID: >>they could possibly build a dynasty that would match the 70's Montreal >>Canadiens teams) > >The Habs are the single greatest team in sports history. Comparing them >to any other team is an insult to the legacy they have created and to >sports as a whole. Flame away. Of course. But I was talking about specifically the 70's teams that were coached by Scotty Bowman. There's no way any team will win 26 (or whatever) cups ever again, at least not in the next couple of centuries, but I could see the Avs winning 4 or 5 in the next decade. Don't forget that the Habs won a dozen or more of their cups when the NHL had only 6 teams, and before the advent of the entry draft, when Toronto and Montreal essentially had first dibs on all of the Canadian-born players. As for the Avs, just look at the draft picks they have next year - they have Boston's first round pick, LA's first round pick, and Washington's. Not to mention the picks they've stockpiled in the later rounds. That's at least two top-5 picks next year, I would think (I don't see the Bruins or Kings getting much better next year), and potentially a third very high pick. Next year's draft is being touted as possibly even better (certainly DEEPER) than this year's. This is to say nothing about the likelihood of Sakic signing with another team, and they'll get a bundle of young talent (possibly Mattias Ohlund + picks from Vancouver) as compensation. They really don't need Sakic that much, since they already have a great young core to build around. The only question, really (well, aside from the question of what they'll do when Roy is finished), is whether they can afford to keep all their players. That's one reason they'll probably not match whatever is offered to Sakic, or match and then trade him - they won't want to pay him the kind of money he's worth right now. Instead they can look 4-5 years down the road when their core players are in their prime, and they also have several young stars from all the draft picks they've acquired. So I wasn't really comparing them to the Habs dynasties, but I do think Colorado could put together a dynasty that rivals the 80's Oilers or possibly the 70's Habs. The Habs had many dynasties though, obviously... I'm not saying that'll be the case with Colorado. But they're certainly in an enviable position right now - they have the best team in the NHL, potentially capable of winning more cups in the next few years, AND they've built towards an incredible future at the same time. BTW, are you SURE Kurt Cobain wasn't a martyr? I dunno man... -fuckfuck ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 May 97 14:18:26 +0200 From: nga@software-ag.de (Neil Gallop) To: email_address_removed Cc: email_address_removed.de Subject: Old Brit prog(ish) Message-ID: Hi all yesterday I received a small parcel from my ex-wife. Having first made sure that it wasn't ticking (you can never be too sure), I opened it to find a whole bunch of old tapes that she had found while clearing out a cupboard in the cellar. I was tempted to throw them out, but then I started looking at what was one them and my little face lit up: tons of really ancient British bands that I had recorded back in 81 prior to moving here to Germany. Stuff like Curved Air - Air Cut Caravan - Cunning Stunts (try saying that when you're drunk!) The Nice - Five Bridges Suite Gryphon - Red Queen To Gryphon Three Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter and so on and so on. I had (am having) a great time listening to all of this stuff, with some great musicians taking me back to the time when I envied bigger kids who had spots and wished I could have my teeth in a brace. If any of you have any of these albums hanging around, dust them down, dig out that old turntable (I know it's in here somewhere), put on those old flared trousers and that Afghan coat (boy, did those things stink) and take a trip down nostalgia alley - you won't regret it. Unfortunately the quality of the recordings was pretty poor, and storing the tapes in cold cellar for the last 10 years or hasn't improved it, so it looks like I might be trying to track down some of these gems on CD pretty soon. There goes my pay rise. stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: The Strawbs - Hero And Heroine ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 May 1997 15:21:09 +0200 From: "Raivo Hool" To: email_address_removed Subject: noobies Message-ID: > from writing "Hi my name is (Fill in the blank) I'm from (Fill in > country or state) and I love Dream Theater and other progressive and > metal bands, please write to me." Though I thought it was good to give an example of a situation that we should aspire to reach, his opinion was that the Kansas list is made up of different people, and what works for them won't necessarily work for us. Good point. I can't resist in noting though that they've successfully completed an internet tribute CD. :) It'll be available soon on DREG records. Are you sure they don't give a good example to follow? :) Just something to think about.
