They *all* make mistakes - THAT'S only human. Singling out the singer for notice is a bit unfair because he's the only one who has to connect with the audience on that level. Plus, let's face it: If you're in a band and you take it as a personal affront whenever someone else in the band fucks up, you're not going to be in a band for very long. Put another way: if a hockey goalie let's in a game-tying goal, a bad team will say "Dammit, we gotta get ourselves a new goalie". A good team will go out and fight to get the lead back. It's the same with a band: you don't say "Oh dammit, the singer/drummer/guitarist/bassist/keysman fucked up again. Why can't we get somebody competant" - you say "Hey, let's make the rest of this show so damn good that only the shmucks on our internet mailing list will ever remember that you fucked up!" ----- ________Pat Sullivan__________________________________ E-mail: email_address_removed WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html IRC: DDictator NP: Deliverance - "If You Will" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 May 1997 22:40:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Sean Malone To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Clockwork's "Search" Message-ID: Just wanted to say a few words about the new CD. Since a number of you folks are in Atlanta, I thought I'd mention that they're playing tomorrow (Sunday May 18) in Atlanta at Smith's Olde Bar, 1578 Peidmont Rd, 9:30pm. I was lucky enough to see these nutty boys for the third time tonight in Gainesville, Florida, and they SMOKE like you wouldn't believe! At tonight's show, they played 3 sets for a total of over 3 full hours of shredfest....and the cover was only $2! (Prices may vary by venue.) Hell, even if you're not into Jazz at all, you still should check them out just to see how cool they are. Lately they've been touring up and down the East coast, and if that's where you live and you want to know if they'll be by your neck of the woods, check out their web page and get yourself on their snail-mail list. I didn't even play through an amp, but some rackmount gear (Tech 21, Boss) into a Mesa/Boogie power amp, and it sounded great. Of course, I played the intro to "ACoS" and "The Mirror" (finally with a low B, yes!). It's on: www.ysba.com or ftp.ysba.com/pub/midplug (something like this). Look for MidiPlug... It's 2.5Mb but is worthy. If you don't have any powerfull soundboard, external Midi or something to make (specially) the drums at your midi files sound like real drums, get it! Not that cheesy sound. The only problem is that if you don't have a high CPU and etc your computer you work very slowly. I have this problem and besides this, Y-SG20 has a kind of 0.5s delay to receive the information from midi device then play it. When using it with Cakewalk I choose drums from Yamaha and the rest from MidiMapper (for example) and it sounds like the drummer was playing another song. :) The S-YG20 provides 360 sounds which include 128 GM-compatible sounds, 9 drum kits + 2 SFX kits, and also reverb, covering not only the conventional GM sounds, but also sounds unique to the XG format proposed by Yamaha (some substitute sounds are included). They also have the Paradise Lost album called "Draconian Times". Does anybody have this album? Is it good? Thanks in advance for any replies. -C. Message-ID: Hi jammers, Below is a message I posted to the Bard's Tavern (BLIND GUARDIAN mailing list) last night and feel it is relevant here because I have just discovered some AMAZING new bands in a musical genre I wouldn't have even thought twice about. It seems that black metal has some SUPERB bands that more people should take notice of. I can't believe no one hear mentions these guys more often...I was in a musical state of bliss as I listened to these albums (something few bands can accomplish for me!) Anyhow, here is my post and hope more people get into these bands. IN FLAMES is so good its addicting!!!!! -------- Hello all, just a quick message to Ed. I went to Slipped Disc last night around 8:30pm (right after chatting with Jade, Efi, & ?? sorry ..forgot the others...my memory isn't as insane as Jade's!) and picked up what I call a "BLACK METAL Startet Kit Vol. I" :-) I bought DARK TRANQUILITY "The Gallery", IN FLAMES "The Jester Race", DISSECTION "Storm of the Light's Bane", and found AT THE GATES "Slaughter Of The Soul" used for $8.99. Also got ATHEIST "Unquestionable Presence" used. Plus rented two videos: IRON MAIDEN "Donnignton '92" and QUEENSRYCHE "Live in Tokyo 1985". The reason I'm posting such a quick response (I'm typing this at 3:45am) after my first foray into this new world of black metal is that I am paralyzed by pleasure as to how good my first two listens are! So far I've only listened to DISSECTION and IN FLAMES and am listening with a huge grin on my face. Keep in my mind that I REALLY value what you guys think of albums and stuff and decided to buy these albums because of all the rave reviews and Ed Hou's constant prodding. So, without hearing any types of audio samples of these bands I just up and bought them all ($65 total...not bad actually. But pretty risky considering I HATE the black metal I've known so far. EMPEROR is just worm-shit when compared to these guys..I can't understand how you love 'em so much Ed? I have to agree with Pedro on this one..they just plain suck!)) Anyhow, glad to say that so far the first two I heard are brilliant!!!!!! DISSECTION had me instantly hooked with their musical talents (thats what really matters to me....duh, I guess thats for everyone also :-) and the vocals were pleasantly tolerable (ala CORONER). A great album right down to the packaging. I actually sat down with the lyrics and all and listened straight through for the whole damn thing..thats quite an accomplishment for a band to have such a hold on me. One thing black metallers know how to do is create an amazing atmosphere through lyrics. I'd say its pretty hard to make me feel as if I'm sitting on a mountaintop surrounded by swirling winds as dawn approaches. Its nice.......... I'm listening to IN FLAMES as I type this and feel my energy draining because I know the type of review I want to give will take me well into the morning and I must go to sleep soon or I will collapse onto my keyboard. IN FLAMES has seriously opened me up to a whole new musical experience I havent felt for in a long time (perhaps since i first heard GAMMA RAY's "Land of the Free" or HELSTAR's "Nosferatu") There is just no compensating the feeling when you pick up a rock in the woods and discover a flawless gem inside! This is one of those rare albums that has complexity and EMOTION (like GR "Land of the Free"!) Its one of those albums I'll NEED to listen to VERY often (which is hard for me because my cd collection is around 500 now). There are only so many words I can use to accurately describe my feelings towards this album. It has brightened up a small portion of my life and transcended all my expectations. If the other discs I bought (AT THE GATES, DARK TRANQUILITY)are as good as these I owe a big fuckin' hail to Ed Hou! HAIL, HAIL, HAIL! Although I still wanna egg your car for your FATES WARNING and HELSTAR comments; these recommendations may reduce my penalties to stealing the air caps from your tires instead :-) HAIL IN FLAMES and DISSECTION!!!!!! Do not hail EMPEROR..they sound like a whimpering puppy when compared to these amazing talents! I MUST get some sleep if I wanna give the other discs a fair listen..i think I'm addicted to IN FLAMES now..crap. Just goes to show what an impact a simple melody can have (something MTV doesnt see...poor misguided fools) on a persons life. Music soothes the savage beast...how true :-) cheers to great music! Carlo "IN FLAMES" D'Angelo (still aka "Fates") P.S. Message-ID: About a year ago on the 'jam, someone I think said that Faith No More had broken up. That kind of sucked because they seemed to be one of the few bands out there that really stuck to their creative genius and maintained a definite identity. But recently I heard their "new song" on the radio and I'm wondering what's up? Are they back? Had they never parted ways? On a side note, I just wanted to mention something... Here in Minneapolis/St. Paul: 1. 3 months ago, a hard-core alternative radio station (the real kind) went belly-up and gave way to... A METAL STATION!!! 2. 2 months ago, a hard-core country station (the lame kind) went belly-up and gave way to... ANOTHER METAL STATION!!! So in the span of one month, our area went from a musically sick and withered situation to "Hey - I don't like this metal song, so I'll change it to the other metal station". It's nice - very nice. I'm trying to get the harder of the two stations to play some DT besides "Pull Me Under". I don't believe they own a copy of Awake though. =( But anyway, who's complaining?
