The spacing between data lines (the stripe-looking things on CDs) is halved (at least), and a different colored laser is used, making the laser thin enough to read separate tracks. Also, for at least movie purposes (maybe music, too) DVDs will be double sided. How?? Well, all the labeling is on the center ring. I was visiting the Sony store in downtown Chicago, where they have a DVD theater set up, and it certainly kicked *my* ass. :) It was really kewel...they had a DVD with Batman Forever on it...one side was the letterbox version, one side was the full-screen version, and both had subtitles in at least 4 languages. Now *that's* storage!! DVDs are able to read all standard CDs, but NOT CD-Rs with the green pigment. Seems the laser can't handle it well. But supposedly manufacturers will be making units with two lasers, one to read standard DVDs, and one to read everything else. Hope this makes some sense!! Oh, and some Blockbuster videos now rent DVD machines...go check it out!! -Maddy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 May 1997 09:53:37 -0500 (CDT) From: Cygnus To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: you First Fates... I'm a subscriber to Video magazine and these guys have at least one big article every month about DVD. They all say the same thing: it's better than LD by far, but the tracking technology needs work on most machines. Tracking is how the machine samples one image from the disc over and over again to create a frozen image, literally a replication of the actual frame of film. Most video retail stores where I am (NJ) have DVD machines on display (they're available from six companies when last I checked) and even on the 20" screens they have, the difference is obvious in picture quality. You have the option of letterboxing, pan & scan image, and widescreen too, so everyone is happy! (my roommate hates letterboxing, I hate P&S) Then you have the options of closed captioning, up to 32 sets of subtitles, different language dubbing tracks, dropping out the soundtrack (music)... The options are endless. I plan on buying a DVD when the next line comes out. Oh, and something in development along with portable DVD: DVD video games. If you thought Playstation rules, imagine the game disc having TWICE the memory! heheh... I'd never leave the house! If anyone wants any price info or stats, give me a day or two and I can look in the back issues of Video. I also highly recommend this magazine if you're a film and video freak (as I am). The players start at a retail of around $599 and run up into the thousands for mulidisc players (not changers). -- _____________________________________________________________ Andrew Forcier a.k.a. "(do you know that the majority of our CDs pass thru a compression of dynamic range? this means that the very, very soft sounds are cut and the very, very loud sounds have their volume lowered)." The compression you are referring to, dynamic compression, is used somewhere along the way in every recording medium. It has nothing to do with decreasing sound quality. It is intended to improve signal to noise ratio by decresing dynamic range which makes it possible to get more signal to tape, or cd- according to what part of the process you are talking about. Compression is used throughout the entire recording process, even while tracking drums and vocals, to mixing, and then to mastering. If this compression wasn't used, the signal level on your recordings would be very erratic. As far as you saying "very soft sounds are cut" is quite untrue. The idea of compression, in a nutshell, is to bring the softer parts up in volume (again to increse s/n ratio), not to cut anything out, along with bringing the volume in louder sections down, then boosting the overall output to get a smoother range of dynamics. The "lossy compression" everyone else is talking about is something entirely different. It has nothing to do dynamic range. They are both called compression because the intention between both is to "squash" something. The dynamic range gets "squashed" with a dynamic compressor, while these MDs are data compressed. The process is similar to how your computer compresses data files. (I am computer illiterate so this is truly a lame explanation) Your computer rids of the least important information so that your file is able to still exist but take up less space. The "lossy compression" in these new formats takes out information it considers "not as important." Well, what part of the music is really considered unimportant? I'm not sure how it chooses to cut information, but it does. So, essentially, part of the music is missing. I'm guessing the upper harmonics are the victims, but I'm not sure. As far as DVD is concerned. It is already available to consumers in the US I believe. Good luck finding it. But- it is only available as a playback unit. Everything about it is still up in the air, which is why it hasn't come around full swing yet. The technology for this has been around for decades, but the recording industry will try anything to stop digital recording medium from getting into the hands of the consumer. You might remember years back when record labels went apeshit over DAT. They thought for sure it was going to mean crazy pirating. This is why consumer DATs wont record at 44.1khz (the sampling rate of cds) because labels feared direct digital piracy, which translated to copies without degradation- (actually there is, but thats another audio lesson altogether.) As far as I know- the audio end of the DVD (vs. the video market) has not yet come up with a standard for the audio. It is possible for them to release a format without compression. The DVD is capable of storing multiple gigs of data vs. the cd which only clocks in at 650mgs. Its not like the storage space isn't there. If it winds up being compressed, its due to the dicks in the record industry. The new DT album will likely be released in the fall. DVD is superior to LD. But they're more like apples and oranges than many think. I've been a LD enthusiast for many years and the initial DVD prototypes were laughable, but the current product blows LD away in pure versatility, quality, price, and more or less every other way I can think of. It also can depend on which studio does the release... I have rented DVD porn that was barely better than a Quicktime video, but most of what you see on video store shelves is very well ported. Remember that LD is analog... and thus laser rot becomes a concern. DVD is so superior to CD for music-only and data-only formats, it's not even funny. The compression is usually minimal or unnecessary when dealing with audio streams, and because of the high sample rates, there's no audible loss of fidelity. For data-only, sheesh, it's to CDROM what CDROM was to floppy. Rush didn't even change the setlist in any noteworthy way last night in Phoenix, so it looks like I'll be using the bonus material to fill disc 3. - Mike Bahr - email_address_removed - http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 May 1997 14:06:35 -0400 (EDT) From: Albert Balkiewicz To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: compression (ndtc) Message-ID: wow, Is this Hairball reincarnated????????? -Al ^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^ email: email_address_removed email_address_removed HOMEPAGE:http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/9280/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 May 1997 14:11:45 EDT From: email_address_removed (Scott Cook) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 2538 Message-ID: Any store that carries Metal Blade artists should have it. A Universe will also get you the cooler finish and Dimarzio > pickups... Well, first off, these guitars are going to be next to impossible to get in any of your larger cities. The buzz is high for these things. I predict that when they come out (Ibanez has admitted that they are already WAY back ordered on these) you'll be paying near list price for them. The Universe currently sells new for between $1200 and $1500... but they are equally backordered (MANY people are waiting for their Universes since before Ibanez introduced these new RG 7 strings at NAMM in January). They only make the Black Universe right now. If you want one of teh White ones or Swirls or any of the other special editions, be prepared to pay premium used gear prices. As far as the pickups go, this is a quote from the Ibanez 7620 web page: For pickups we use black custom-matched DiMarzio 7-string pickups in direct mounted into the body for extra low-end sustain. and then there was this, on the Universe page: the Universe features (...) DiMarzio pickups (Blaze II). As a Universe owner, I can tell you that these pickups are not worth killing anyone over. They have a very flat frequency response (this was on purpose, because the low B can actually become overpowering and can damage your speakers at high volumes if it has too much output) and takes a lot of tweaking to get a great tone out of. I wish they would have spent more time on just making a good sounding pickup than trying to even everything out. Before making a decision based on pickups, I would recommend waiting until you can try out an RG 7620. They may be the exact same pickups as the Universe, or they may even sound better to your ears. > From: Scott Cook > Subject: [Fwd: Chicago Police [joke] Hehehe, not bad. > Subject: New DT disc release date pushed back to '98?? > I have a buddy who works at an HMV here, and I asked him about 3 or 4 > months ago when the new DT disc was due out. Not even Warner Bros. is in a position to be able to know this, unless they aren't actually getting DT into the studio in May, or they have decided to hold back the release after it's already recorded and ready. We've heard a LOT of people give a similar accounting here, saying "I called Elektra" etc, and I think that there just aren't any official facts to go by.
