Notice > those how those last chords just pull you into (under, bad pun, > sorry) the last chorus?. That' what i'm talking about. The thing that I notice about the band is well they work the 'jam' into the song. There are many examples, but since I've recently been taking regular injections of Awake, that's where most of my listening is centered. Yesterday, it was Voices and Lie that stood out as giving the best of both worlds: a carefully composed/arranged song from formally trained musicians and some all out, crank it up, jamming. What JP does with the WAH on Voices is pure unadulterated, raw emotion :) Also, of the newer stuff I heard at the Strand show, they're making even heavier use of the 'jam'. I grew up going to see a lot of club bands which is mostly comprised of the 'jam fest'. Dixie Dregs were incredible in a small club (<500) setting. Jon Finn Group did it extensively a couple of weeks ago. I'm actually happy to see the band doing this. This is a good thing, IMO. And it certainly seems to put to rest the question "Can't they just loosen up and kick back?" BTW, anyone catch the RPM/Steve Morse gig? I'd be very interested in hearing a review. I saw them recently at Teh Galaxy in St. Louis. Great set by them, Komeda was, yes, unbearably bad (though they did provide some good material for some humour :). Oh, and tix for that show were $5, so even if they sucked, it was worth it there :). Dale R. Nope, "Silent Bob" was in "Clerks" and "Mallrats". He only had one speaking line in the end of each. That's how he got the name "Silent Bob". In "Chasing Amy" he has a decent size speaking part, not just one line, so maybe his name should be altered. He is also the guy who wrote and directed all three movies. In other news, does anyone know who is touring with Queensryche, specifically at Greats Woods in MA if it is different at different dates. From: email_address_removed (Scott Cook) I was so moved by tonight's Ellen episode I am proud to announce to the Jam and the world that I AM A LESBIAN. That's right, I LOVE women! I heard it was cancelled due to the impending downfall of Apple Computers. Don't flame me - that's just what I heard . . . well, OK, I made that up . . . From: Anton Max There's a distinction that should be made between what I'll call "folk music" and "artistic music" (and it shouldn't be inferred from this that "folk music" is not artistic.) The folk stuff, which I'll apply to a lot of rock n' roll, especially punk, and basically everything that's popular these days, is by its nature accessible. It will reach out and sooth you or shock you, but either way it will make itself immediately known. It tends to be simpler so the average listener, who has a life and a job and stuff to do other than sit in a dark room and listen to music, can sing along, maybe dance to it, hum the melody while he does something, etc. This music has always been around, it always will be, and it will always be more popular, and it has an intrinsic value. Prog will never be as big. Some prog bands may gain a huge following, because their are people who look to appreciate music as an end in itself and not as something to dance to, play in their car, etc. But in general, people have lives, and to appreciate "artistic music" you often need to pay it direct attention, which requires time and effort. I think I just went off on a tangent. Excuse me. I think my point is something like this: people here get pissed at what's popular because it bores them. it fulfills a function for others, but for the Noble Pissed at Pop, DT fulfills the same function and much more, so they get sick of hearing this simple stuff all the time while the bands they like, who they consider much more talented, starve from lack of attention. Me, I don't mind a lot of the stuff that's popular, but I don't buy much of it because once I've heard it, I've heard it, and there's rarely a need to own it. Well said, Anton! I am printing out your "tangent" because it puts into words what I've been thinking ever since I got my latest g/f, who likes (whispering) country. She gets mad when I criticize it, and says that what I listen to is "weird". I hate saying "it's cause I'm a musician and I appreciate complex music" because that's kinda like waving your dick in the air (which she actually likes) - anyway, thanks for your analysis - I for one thought it was perfect! She recited the following story : "There are three birds sitting on a wire. A gunman shoots one of the birds. How many birds are left on the wire?" The boy pauses. "None," he replied thoughtfully. "No, no, no. Let's try again," the teacher says patiently. She holds up three fingers. "There are three birds sitting on a wire. A gunman shoots one," she puts down one finger, "how many birds are left on the wire?" "None," the boy says with authority. The teacher sighs. "Tell me how you came up with that." "It's simple," says the boy, "after the gunman shot one bird, he scared the other two away." "Well," she says, "it's not technically correct, but I like the way you think." "Okay," chimes the boy, "now let me ask you a question. There are three women sitting on a bench eating popsicles. One woman is licking the popsicle, one woman is biting the popsicle, and one is sucking the popsicle. Which one is married?" he asked innocently. The teacher looked at the boy's angelic face and writhed in agony, turning three shades of red. "C'mon," the boy said impatiently, "one is licking the popsicle, one is biting, and one is sucking. Which one is married?" "Well," she gulped and in a barely audible whisper replied," the one who's sucking?" "No," he says with surprise, "the one with the wedding ring on. But I like the way you think." }:-> ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 May 97 20:35 EDT From: Soul Madness To: email_address_removed Subject: ---------------------- Message-ID: Just 2 random and very small reviews I have: Kilgore Sludge (Smudge??- name escapes me)- Blue Collar Solitude Good band- reminds me of how Life Of Agony should sound. Total non-prog. Heavy..sounds pissed. A lot of attacks on religion. First song, singer says something about "sucking my rod because mine is a merciful God". Beautiful..brought a tear to my eye. Recommended. Queensryche- Operation: Promised Land I've been warned but its the only damn QR PL boot I could afford. Hope to buy State Of Art or S&S soon. Oh, yeah, what I was warned about was the skipping. The bootleg maker got lazy. Can barely play track 1 and 2 (I Am I/ Damaged). Revolution Calling sucks compared to the version on the Silent Lucidity bootleg. Someone Else is exceptional- the guitar adds to it. I Am I (when it can be heard) and Someone Else are the best songs. Really wanted to hear Promised Land live but its not on here. Should've listened to the warning about this CD. Just like Silent Lucidity (which skips on track 1), its got an engraved mark on it making it skip. Packaging is okay. By the way, theres a new QR boot out with 1982 demos on it but I can't recall the name of it. I'm pondering getting this. Most bands usually have one guy who's the main >songwriter and arranger (Harris in Maiden, for example) and of course >there's the infamous producer. i think that this is the reason DT's songs are so different from one and other.they each have personality of thier own unlike many bands today where every sond sounds the same. i think this is because with most bands the songs only express one band members ideas, felling, thoughts, ect., the writer. because he's the only one who can put it into music where as with a band like DT you have five different personalitys contributing to the songs each member putting a little bit of their influence in the song. with this many writers you can make album after album, song after song, without them being repetitive like many bands today. -ryan email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 May 1997 21:26:22 -0400 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: NDTC - Mega F**king Deth Message-ID: Greetingage Jam!!
