I wouldn't > want to see you slip on that fence and crack a nad due to indecision. You > can't take both sides, without being half as effective. i think it's time i step in here. i post a certain way for a certain reason: generally to get a rection. whether it's positivly or negativly, it matters none to me. i've seen too many posts where they just say "here's my opinion blah blah blah" and that's it. the mark of any good newgroup (or newsletter, as the jam is) is the thoughtfull balance between humor and worthwhile conversation. let it be known that i have pissed off a member of dream theater (and have since appologized for stepping across another line i didn't mean to cross) and i have pissed a lot of you off. the reason is simple: the more you diagree with sometning, the more you'll try and show the others side your point of view...and hopefully, that's done constrctivly. do i think chris went over the line? yes. did i think that -i- may have gone over the line? perhaps. notice the kind of issues that were brought up following the post. some of them were moronic (lars, espically) and others really made me stop and think. there's a reason i say "i welcome all intellegent comments," mainly because i like to see the other side. only through seeing the other side (not always agreeing with it) makes me not close-minded; it makes me a better person. to quote a song from an old hardocre band: "there's no purpose in saying you're sorry when you did what you thought was right you can always learn to accept new ideals if you can risk your hypothetical pride i'm not looking to change the world pushing politics is not my concern i just have a wish to improve myself i've realised there's so much more to learn to act...to think..for myself...with no regrents and to find what is real." just something to think about. comment are always welcome. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Apr 1997 11:02:30 -0500 (CDT) From: Chris Ptacek To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 2515 Message-ID: > I have been reading all these posts for the past couple months about > people's encounters backstage with the members of DT, and have been > wondering "how'd they pull that off?" Hahahah! If we told you, then we'd have to tell EVERYONE, and then our tricks might not work by the time DT gets to US again! J/K Actually, there's only two things you can do, I think. You either have to know someone (i.e. a band member, a tour manager, concert promoter, etc, whom I know none of) or you get to the venue several hours early (if the show opens at 7PM, you are there at 2 PM.) so you are present when the band arrives. I find it's rare that at any show the band will use the side entrance to get in. Sometimes they use it to grab a smoke during the opening act, and sometimes the shows are just too popular and EVERYONE is there at 2 PM, but generally, the front dorrs are where I do my begging and pleading. Of course, at the Jason Becker Benefit, I was able to talk to the mighty Greg Howe as he was waiting for a cab. No one else recognized him. :) Until recently, I thought it would be a good idea to wear a Ytsejam t-shirt... but now I'm not so sure. I will anyways, but I doubt it will help my cause next tour. :) Take care! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Apr 1997 01:25:11 +0900 From: email_address_removed.ne.jp (Keiji Nishihara) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Any news on Crimson Glory/TNT reunions? They'll play tomorrow at our area (Osaka JAPAN). And latest album titled Firefly is CRAP. Yes, there're 2 nice songs ("Daizy Jayne" and "Monthes Of Sundays"), but most songs on this album are grungy songs. Can you believe that? I think grunge days are over and it's very nice timing to move to more artistic music. So I wanted them to play Morning Wood (Tony's post TNT project with Al Pitrelli) style music. It's called "Firefly" and it's only available as an import (to U.S. fans). Word is that it is pretty good, if you're into them. I only own "Realized Fantasies" (which I like a lot) and "Tell No Tales" (which is decent). It's quite possible that a lot of jammers will like them. And I think this song doesn't fit, too. > > It has the same happy feeling like Another Day, though this time everything's > > over. I just don't understand it! I've said it before and i'll say it again, "Take Away My Pain" is my favorite of the new DT stuff I've heard and is destined to rank amoung my favorite DT songs of all time. The lyrics, like you said, are amazingly powerful: they're fairly simplistic (at least compared to other JP works like "Metropolis" or ""Voices") but the song is so personal that to dress the words up in fancy imagery or literary allusions would detract from it's intent. And as far as the music goes, I love BJ (Bon Jovi, that is:) and AOR also. It's definitely the most "commerical" song I've heard of the new stuff and it is also the most catchy. To call it "bombastic" I think is a huge exaggeration. It's not like they have german opera going for backing vocals or anything. It is an electrified ballad of the highest caliber. And as far as it not being appropriate as a song about death, I think we each deal with death in our own away. I wouldn't say that the song is "happy", per se; in fact, one of the things I love about the song is the contrast between "poppy" music and depressing. As for the Another Day comparison, I think it's fitting that both songs have a similarity, since at least it is my understanding, both songs have a connection to JP's father. Dream Theater was going to play a show, but their venue was the local Cloth World. (A typical place where you go to get fabric, sewing supplies, crafty things like that. Not a typical place for a concert.) So there I was, doing my press thang and trying to get the band out of their "dressing room" (aka the manager's office). The truck was parked inside, and the sides came off -- voila! the stage! So the band gets up to do their stuff, there are by now a whole lot of your typical metalhead fans, then some lonely stringy-looking blonde dirty guys in black, then a few women dressed in goth (like me I guess), lace and black spandex and denim or leather. Whatever. A lot of black, a lot of dyed hair. A lot of body decorations. The guys didn't even do a soundcheck, and James got all pissed off, and then the others decided they'd just do air-guitar and instruments. They were all dressed alike in denim vests, jeans, and cowboy boots, and sat down in a row with their backs to the audience. The crowd was really pissed and when the band went back to the dressing room the people just got up and walked out. I was so embarrassed, I felt like I hadn't done the promotions right (although I hadn't been hired to do it). I got up on stage and begged them to come out (the mics were wired into the store intercom). But by that time they'd already left. What a depressing dream! ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2516 **************************
