It was *meant* as a joke! Maybe the one who can't take a joke is the one you see in the mirror ;-) Seriously though, just how many times do you think we need to see the same joke in one week? It's not that it wasn't funny; it was so accurate it's sort of scary, but that was at least the third time in the past week or two that the same exact joke was told. I love jokes and there isn't *anything* that I can't find humor in, but enough's enough. He's playing at a club in Northampton, MA called Pearl Street on May 11th. Tickets are only $15-$20, so if any of you are in the area check it out. This is wonderful for all the people like me who don't have 62 million dollars to see the G3 show. Anyway, I'll let you know how it turns out. - Jason ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Apr 1997 23:29:51 -0700 From: email_address_removed (Shane Liebling) To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: for all you rush freaks. Also, to the dude that was wondering where/how to get to Riverport Amphitheater (and anyone else who might be wondering), it's easy to find. Just get on I-70, and go toward St. Louis. You can NOT miss it. There's this huge-ass sign that says Riverport on it, and a sign directing you to the amphitheater. I'd leave early, though. Traffic can be a bear getting in there when there's a big crowd. E-mail me privately for more details. COOL! A commercial for Ozz Fest just came on :). Dale R. Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids... A couple 'jams back, Rip made a few most excellent statements about tolerance and these flamewars over the quality of "Pleasant Shade of Gray." Go back and have a look, I'll wait.... Done? Good. Now, since nobody seems to be paying attention to this, here's something else everybody ought to consider: No music -- NONE OF IT -- sucks. How can I say that? It's easy. To paraphrase Alan Moore (who said, "All stories are true,") all music is good. If you don't like a particular kind of music, the most that can be said about it is that it's not good for you -- it's just good for someone else. There is no kind of music that doesn't make someone somewhere glad they listened to it. Even if a band has NO fans at all, the band members are playing for themselves, so their music STILL doesn't suck. If somebody posts saying that the new FW blows goats and it's the most boring thing they've ever heard, *big fucking deal*. It's an opinion. Let 'em have it. If you don't espouse it yourself, fine -- but don't start ragging them because you think they're wrong! Have a little tolerance for chrissake. I listen to a tremendous amount of different music, but I don't slag something because I don't like it; I just don't listen to it. Paraphrasing another great man (Henry Rollins) -- don't bother to hate someone or something, just leave it alone. Hating something is a waste of time and energy. I think the Galactic Cowboys are in that movie as a band with a cheesy "thunder" name or something. In fact I'm almost sure of it. Now I'm too lazy to read the credits, so anyone out there no if it is GC? Also, if you haven't checked out the movie, and you like that METAL stuff, go check it out. White Zombie and Lemmy (Motorhead) cameo too :) On a side note, man, the early 90s rocked. Back when we had a new, all black metallica album, megadeth had just come out with Rust in Peace, "Alternative" bands actually resembled music (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, AIC, etc.), Dream Theater had that hit single "Pull My Udder" or something :), "metal" was still a buzz word, and the girls at the clubs were all going for the Kelly Bundy look. If he thought he was putting out shit, why did he bother recording them? I always thought artists only put out stuff they really dug and thought their fans would also dig. Has his opinion of MD's material changed or was he sorry as soon as they were released? Don't get me wrong, I like RiP and CoE (the only MD CDs I have). (Actually, CoE has a slight edge, because BOTH the bass guitar and the drums come through a lot better in the mix...when the whole rhythm section makes that kind of improvement, I just hafta make note of that.) But I just found it odd that Dave would feel the need to apologize for his past work. > ------------------------------ > From: Brian Henderson > > time any geezer in a Buick comes anywhere *near* me, I'm rippin' into 'em, > no questions asked. This time it's the Fates Warning flame war list, my God, is this boring. I think it's time for some DTC: Hey Ties, you haven't talked to *us* about Just Let Me Breathe. I think it's great! A compact, heavy song with a good groove and one of those insane lead parts we all love. It's bug fun! I rather see DT have success with that song than with Take Away My Pain, which *SUCKS* *BIG* *TIME* IMHO. The audience seemed to feel similar, when I think of the reactions during the shows. BTW, did you see the Take The Time-reference in JLMB? We all know the chorus of TTT: "Close your eyes, you can find all you need in your mind" Now in JLMB: "Close your mind, you can find all you need with your eyes" Did no one else notice that? Anyway, my absolute favorite of the new songs is still Lines In The Sand. Unbelievably compact. I mean, it's 14 minutes but it's like 5 min. Cool jazzy piano bits by Derek, soulful solo by JP, brilliant drumming, laid back vocals, etc etc. Simply a potential classic. Trial Of Tears was different. It had the same laid back, floydish feeling, but seemed to be confused, raw, and unfinished. Some cool parts, but it seemed more like a jam session, based on some LITS-bits (melody lines were very similar!), not like a written song. Maybe the producer will help. Well, Take Away My Pain... Some quite powerful lyrics, but the music is so weak. A song about John's father's death, sounding like a Bon Jovi ballad. I expected a calm, sad song, but instead they did a bombastic, pathetic AOR track. Would you let a big band play "In The Mood" during your dad's funeral? No, of course, that wouldn't fit. And I think this song doesn't fit, too. It has the same happy feeling like Another Day, though this time everything's over. I just don't understand it!
