I find the nearest alternageek store clerk, pink hair, and dress and all(this is a guy BTW, they abound at Tower on Mass Ave), and ask them if they have gotten the new FW. "Fates who?" Grumble, grumble. At least he? knew how to use a computer to type it in. "Yup, it's here, but its down in recieving." "Can you get it?" "Nope, have to wait until tomorrow." Grumble, Grumble. Damn bastards. So I show up to get it today. And do you all wonder where the FW copies went? Boston. They have 15 copies of APSoG at Tower at Mass Ave... I kid you not. Now if they could get Superior and all of the other good European prog bands not on Magna Carta, I'd be pleased as punch. All you Boston Jammers, run there and grab em... I don't think they are going anywhere. For course, then I get back to my office, and lo and behold! My Kiss The Stone disks are IN! Shit. But I was going to listen to FW. Hmmm... Guess I'll listen to the live disks here, and listen to theFW disk in the calm comfort of home. So now I've heard it all the way through, and I must say, this is one of the coolest songs I've heard... EVER! The lyrics rock for one thing. THe music is kinda rough in places for me, but not many places. Am I the only one that noticed that KM's effects in track 12 sound like fire works being launched and exploding? Cool effect. I am a manager at mine. On my daily rounds April 22,1997,I suddely remembered all you people talking about APSOG coming out this week and every Tuesday is new release day. Well I sauntered over to the "F" section under Rock/R&b and there were two of them under Fates Warning. Only 2!!!! I thought this was a mistake. NOT!!! We only had recieved the initial 2. So I picked up one and carried it around for a little while. When I realized I wouldn't be able to buy it that night. I put it back with the other one. Two days later they were both still there. (I live in WAco,Tx. Not a big prog town)So I bought it with my employee discount and only shelled out $10.80 for it.(suckers) Brought it home tonight and I am currently on my second listen on Part IX. AWESOME FREAKIN' SONG!!!!!! I cant get over it. It is already starting to grow on me. I will be listening to this one as much as I&W and Awake and ACOS. like somebody already said here, If I hadn't got on this mailing list,I probably would have never listened to this APSOG. Cool parts include 2, 3, 4 (though why the sudden switch to that "mono" sound in the middle?), 7 (I really like the crazy triplet figure as a frentetic response to "Shoot me!"). Parts 8 and 11 are interesting to me perhaps because of their similiarity to the last half of PS. I was, however, disappointed with the overall structure of the "song." The individual sections don't seem to be connected in any way (at least not after only a few hearings), rather, as one Italian jammer wrote, just seem stacked up next to each other, fading from one "tune" to the next. Maybe that's part of the whole dream idea (I assume that's what the alarm clock at the way, way end is to mean), where the parts are apparently jumbled collections of thoughts. In any case I was really looking for more explicit musical unity. For instance, I was really hoping the cool melody line in Part 2, with the slippery flat-5 in it, to come back at the end, or the quasi-Reznor-quasi-disembodied-voice effect from the "chorus" of the same Part. In fact that Part is probably my favorite so far (and 4, I guess). Oh yea, lastly, one a cool note, the way the guitar fades in from its own delay at the beginning of Part 12 is great. It sounds like drum delay at first but it turns out not to be. Very neato. By the way, whoever posted the DT-50% positive and FW-50% negative, etc. was right on in my mind. Fates Warning just reminded me why they are my second favorite band. It will take me several more listens before I get it all. Kev's addition was great. The distorted vocals are great. Fates makes another change of direction. I approve. I write short sentences. I am happy. Anyone else think that the instrumental section in part IV reminds them of At Fates Hands? Silly names: Well, they referred to Joe as "mike white" in the liner notes, and with no "Sal Mortadelli" in the credits, that must haveen Frank Aresti (why no goodbye for him??) And Ray is most likely "Fidel Horrendous" as per his "Horrendous Music" credit in Inside Out, leaving only "George Hideous" and "Arthur Letsgoberg" as the mystery identities. My guess is that George is Jim, since that name is usually listed first, and Jim is the core of the band, but who knows? I don't. That makes Mark to be Mr. Letsgoberg. Whee! new fates!!!!!! Rush's Chronicles vid arrived in the post today (I ordered it first, natch...). Pretty darn tootin' good, although the Time Stand Still vid made me cringe a bit... Still haven't seen the new Queensryche album in Oz, although I heard mention that it's been seen elsewhere in the country. Not to worry, I already bought it from CDnow and loved it. Who cares if they haven't progressed? Not I. Speaking of KISS (as some people were), I watched some of a boot from their 2nd Sydney show today. Not terribly great quality, the sound was clear and everything - I think it was all taken from the monitors at the back of the stage. The Brisbane show was brilliant, btw. Saw a fella wearing a DT shirt there (the one with the Awake cover on it). :) Anyway, back to Rush, after watching the vid I decided to listen to Hold Your Fire again, which had never really done anything for me, and which I usually used just for background music (well, not intentionally, but I found it easy to ignore). *Anyway*, I listened to it again and I loved it! Knew every song! Looking forward to Bruce Dickinson's new album, "Accident of Birth". Haven't anticipated an album this much since Maiden released "The X Factor". Advance word is terribly good. Anyway, that's about all for this week. In the tradition of a couple of you chaps, I'll now tell you all what I'm listening to at the mo. Message-ID: Whoever posted that long track by track thing in the last jam asked what the girl was saying in Part III... She's just repeating part of the lyrics: "Rain's. Falling. Hours. Crawling." Headphones, man, headphones... Some of the other samples... In Part VI, when the baby's crying, "The time is 4. 19." then something about time that I can't make out... then a snipet from a weather report - something about dreary out and something in the afternoon... then "The answer is 'no. None were [drowned out]'" And it part seven, the best I can make out is "I want you to do me a favor . I want you to a gun and JUST SHOOT ME! SHOOT ME!" A little breakdown of what sounds like what: Part I - starts with a 'spanish/western' sound to it... and about halfway though gets possessed by the spirit of Danny Elfman. Part II - Very NINish... Part III - Can't say for sure... has an alternative feel to it though... Part IV - The keys towards the end of this remind me of something, but I can't place it.. Part V - the 'Let nothing...' section sounds eastern... maybe indian or egyptian. About three minutes in when that guitar scale comes in is VERY cool. Reminds me of the chromatic scale JP did at the StL clinic. Rip? You remember that? Part VI - Back to that 'western' feel again. This isn't *Pace* Balls and Chunky picante sauce! This stuff's made in New York City! The vocals here give me chills every time. Bass is cool too. Part VII - For some reason this reminds me a bit of Lie... I think it might just be the guitar pattern though... it's very similar to part of Lie. Part VIII - has a fast paced Operation Mindcrime feel to it at the beginning. The rest of it sounds VERY much like Shadow Gallery. Part IX - Candlebox? Nah, couldn't be. :) Part XI - The key textures at the beginning of the track reminds me a lot of IQ. Actually, I think IQ is who I was thinking of on Part IV... Part XII - What do you get when you put Fates Warning, Enya, and Chariots of Fire in a blender? :) I've listened to this CD no less than 20 times, and it just keeps getting better! h t t p : / / w w w . m i s s o u r i . e d u / ~ c 6 7 5 3 1 1 / | Pat Griffin Reality2 Design | | email_address_removed email_address_removed | h t t p : / / w w w . m i s s o u r i . e d u / ~ c 6 7 5 3 1 1 / ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 2499 **************************
