This is my first time on the YTSE - Jam Mailinglist. So, the only thing I have to say is: THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR IS CALLED " A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY " and it's from FATES WARNING!! I really can say that, 'cause I'm in the good situation of being a writer for a german fanzine called "That's It!" and I have the new Fates' CD for about five weeks. I hear it every day! I hear it in my walkman! I hear it in the evening when I'm lying in bed and the first thing I do when I wake up is: hearing the album. It's a masterpiece, a killer-album, the best progressive-thing I've heard since the release of "Images & Words". I don't know if my second alltime-favorite band (SAVATAGE9 can top this album! Jim Matheos has carved his name in stone with that (to use the words by Shadow Gallery...)... CHECK IT OUT!!!! Greetings, Michael ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 97 15:42:06 +0200 From: Jason Breitweg To: email_address_removed, email_address_removed, Subject: Review: DT -> Bonn, Germany Message-ID: Headliner: Dream Theater Opening Act: Enchant Date: April 19, 1997 Venue: Biskuithalle -> Bonn, Germany Attendance: 2000 (I think someone mentioned that this was the capacity of this place. But it was bigger than the Forum or Babylon at any rate.) Review by Jason Breitweg (email_address_removed.de) The four hour train ride from Hamburg to Bonn was uneventful. Damn train made too much noise and had too many stops though! At the train station we were met by my friend Joerg and some of his friends from Kaiserslautern. Kinda surprised me actually, but a good surprise. Then my friend Doug and I went to lunch at a traditional America place, namely Pizza Hut. Good stuffed crust pizza and garlic bread. While coming out of Pizza Hut we ran into another friend of mine. I think I know too many people *grin*. We then got a ride from them to the Biskuithalle where DT was going to play. Even though we were two hours or more early there were a lot of people there already. I think it was because this was the most Northern show in all of Germany. So people from everywhere came to see it. I saw a lot of people from the previous two shows I was at. Like a little family by now *laugh*. Hello to Steffen and Denis by the way. Well the doors of the place opened at something very early like 6:15pm. So I rushed in and got a place in the second row in front of where JP would stand. Of course I had my banner that made its first appearance in Muenchen *grin*. Enchant came on stage at 6:45pm! Even earlier then in Muenchen. Someone told me that Bonn has a 10pm curfew. What a lame town! Enchant played basically the same set as the two previous shows I saw. Good stuff overall. Then at the end of thier set they had a special guest. Mr. Mike Portnoy himself! He played drums along with the band on Alice in Chains' "Would" or is it "Wood" *chuckle*. Good stuff. Obviously done because this was the last date on the tour. Also there was various shit adourning the stage. A plastic skull and hand. Various toy robots. And a rubber chicken that the lead singer of Enchant kept choking *evil grin*. I think that this crowd in Bonn knew Enchant more so then the ones in Nuernberg or Muenchen. One lady even had a little heart with some stuff written on it that she gave the band. The singer said "Look guys, someone like us." Obviously surprised them. After Enchant left we had some drunks push to the front making the whole area very very crowded. I could only stand this for about half the show since it was so damn hot in the place. Of course DT was in top form again on this night. Basically the same set list: ACOS 1 & 2 Mirror Lie Burning My Soul The Killing Hand Just Let Me Breathe Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden Peruvian Skies Pull Me Under Lines in the Sand Take Away My Pain ACOS 4 Ytsejam Learning To Live ACOS 6 Enore: Metropolis I The new songs went over well. I got a big smile from JP when he saw me singing "Just let me Breathe". And of course it was the special part about eMpTyV *grin*. More people yelling from the crowd for songs. And yes James doesn't seem to know how to handle these people. He kept telling them to keep drinking and smoking and shut up. He should just ignore them, how hard could that be? The singer from Enchant helped with the vocals on CiA9ITG. Not a big help but he was obviously joyed to be on stage with DT. I forgot in my previous reviews to mention this one part where Derek has a solo coming up and Mp points to him and says on his mike "Derek Sherinian on keys, he wrote this one". Spinal Tap lives *grin*! Now in the middle of Metro they stopped playing and gave MP a birthday cake. Had the majesty symbol on it I was told. He took a little bite and spit it out on the crowd *yum yum*. Then we all sung happy birthday for Mike (he is the big 30 they said). Then the guys started taking off their instruments. But wait why is John Myung handing MP his bass? Hey is the JP climbing behind the drum kit? Whoah...hold on to that guitar tightly Derek. MP grabs the mike and says that this is a very new band called Nightmare Cinema. He then introduced all the guys again. He asked us if this reminded anyone of Spinal Tap? Whereupon JP screams out "Hello Cleveland!". Know one seemed to have heard of this movie. Guess they haven't translated it into German yet. Of course James isn't talented enough to do anything else so he still had to sing *chuckle*. They then proceded to play "Perfect Strangers". Great sound. Derek played all the chords right, no solo though. JP even did some fills on the kit. MP was basically just running around hitting the top two strings. The didn't figure out how to end the song so they basically did a "Pull Me Under" on it. Instruments were then exchanged again and the rest of Metro was played. A great show, if just for the Nightmare Cinema stuff! I didn't get to meet the band afterwards. There were too many people out there and we had to catch a train. Everyone went back to America the night afterwards I guess. But JP stayed for his clinic tour through Europe. So 3 DT shows in 8 days. Muenchen was the best. The new material rocks! I can't wait until the new stuff comes out on CD! Recall, Images and Words is only 57 minutes and some change. That should be correct.... And Images and Words is by far the favorite CD for the majority of Dream Theater fans. This chicken's trying to cross an 8-lane highway. So he starts running along the side of the road, in the same direction as traffic, and eventually there's an opening and he flaps his wings and hops across the first lane. He makes it past the next three in the same way, almost being killed each time. Then he's in the middle, and he discovers that for the next four lanes, traffic is moving in the opposite direction. But he doesn't want to go that way, so he just runs the way he was going down the middle of the road, hoping an opportunity will present itself. He does this for quite some time, but the cars keep coming and they won't slow down for him. So finally he says "the hell with this," flaps his wings, and takes to the sky. Traffic be damned, he's a bird. -maximilian Anton Max MadMax+@cmu.edu http://thunderdome.pc.cs.cmu.edu/aepithex.html 23 hours. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 11:37:23 -0400 (EDT) From: Anthony To: email_address_removed Subject: Progressive Radio Show -- NEED IDEAS! Gotta love it, though, sometimes 5 albums out in one year!!!! Some of my personal favorites from the first 2 decades of FZ, along with some featured artists) are: ANYTHING WITH "ANYSLEY DUNBAR" ON IT!!!! Hot Rats (Captain Beefheart) One Size Fits All (George Duke, Chester Thompson, Johnny "Guitar" Watson) Bongo Fury (The Capt, Duke, Bozzio, Thompson) Zoot Allures (Terry Bozzio) Studio Tan (Duke, Thompson, Eddie Jobson!_ Sheik Yerbouti (with Adrian Belew and Terry Bozzio!) Joe's Garage, act 1 (Vinnie Colaiuta). Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar (Jobson, Colaiuta, Bozzio, Jean-Luc Ponty!) Apostrophe (with the immortal "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow") They certainly have some pretty progressive stuff on 'em. Been a few years, but I believe it's on Sheik, there's a song where Frank absolutely rips the crap out of the guitar. His sense of orchestration was phenominal Be prepared for some bizzare lyrics, though :) Just some(!) of the song titles are enough!!
